Beer of the Month Club | Price vs. Product and Service
Beer of the Month Club and romance
I originally heard of the Beer of the Month Club as a suggestion for a Valentine’s Day gift. Of course, the suggestion was that it’s a great gift for men, but obviously a lot of women would love this gift, too. However, before you go signing up for the Beer of the Month Club, here are a few things you should know.
First of all, the shipping and handling costs are as much as the fee on a small online personal loan. The difference is that an online personal loan fee is usually about 15 percent of the overall cost, while the shipping and handling for Beer of the Month Club is about 75 percent of the total cost. Ouch!
Doing the math
When I first went to the Beer of the Month Club web site, I thought the price for the Original Microbrewed Beer Club was reasonable — even good. For a 12-pack of 12-ounce bottles it’s $20.95. That is a totally reasonable price for microbrews, especially “lightly distributed” microbrews. Plus, you get three bottles of four different types of beer.
However, after that $20.95 price tag is the kicker: “plus additional S&H.” So I checked out what it would cost to sign up, and the monthly price after shipping and handling is $34.95. So now we’ve gone from $21 per month to $35 per month. For people with a lot of money, that’s probably not a huge deal. However, for the majority of us, the difference between paying $21 for a 12-pack of beer and $35 is pretty substantial. Can we justify it?
Perks of Beer of the Month Club
So now that we’re talking about paying $35 for 12 beers, it’s time to examine whether the price is worth it. First off, having stuff delivered to your house is nice. Obviously, beer is heavy, so it costs a lot to ship. Furthermore, they are shipping beers from all over the country.
It says the beers are “lightly distributed,” so likely you’ll be receiving stuff that you don’t have access to in your area most of the time. So for $35 a month, you can try four different beers that you probably wouldn’t be able to try without taking an expensive trip. Clearly, the Beer of the Month Club is for connoisseurs who want to try as many different types of beer as they can, not economy drinkers.
Is Beer of the Month Club a good gift idea?
But back to the Valentine’s Day gift idea, you can sign up for as many months as you like — only one if you choose. You can also choose to have the beers of the month delivered every month, every other month, or every third month. So perhaps if you want to scale down the price, you could get a yearlong membership but just have one delivery per season.
There are other options, too, including International & Domestic Variety Beer Club,The International Beer Club and The Rare Beer Club. Of course, when you’re ordering rare beers and beers from overseas, you pay for what you get.
