Want to check your bag, sir. Certainly, sir, that’ll be $15

Traveling is difficult. It’s one big hassle from the time your wife says, “It’s time to pack” until she says “It’s time to put the cases back in the attic.” It’s not the sitting on the plane all those endless hours that have changed – I have grown older and less patient, true – it’s a mixture of the rigmarole that the airport and the airline have developed. The rising costs of travel don’t help, either.

The cab isn’t cheap either

It starts in the cab to the airport. Last time I travelled I spent most of a very respectable Payday Loan just getting to the airport. Yesterday I asked my son to give us a lift. It was an imposition but he is a son and what are children for anyway? He didn’t mind at all. “Gives me a chance to see the new terminal building,” he said.

The terminal

Inside, the terminal is brand new and huge. Security men are everywhere and it takes me a few minutes to orientate myself and find a line to stand in. I am a few passengers away from the check-in counter when I see the signs. “American Airlines and United Airlines are now charging to check bags on their flights.”

I look around to see if anyone else has gone into shock. All I see are American and United officials in their smart uniforms examining the passengers. Clearly they are keeping watch on how much carry-on baggage people take on board to avoid the new check-in fees. I try and explain at the counter that I would love to fly without any bags, but my wife…, you know…, she insists on a change of clothing.

I pay the fee, answer all the security questions about who packed the bag, where the bag was packed, where the bag has been since it was packed and silently swear that I will not travel again. Ever.

Security

Finally I have the precious boarding pass in my hand and I have to pass through the personal security checkpoint. It’s a pain. I empty all the metal objects into the plastic tray – which I understand you will soon have to pay to use – take off my belt and shoes and shuffle through the metal detector that is set to super-sensitive and goes off from a cheap filling job I once had done on a tooth. More questions and hands patting me all over. I’m on holiday and I’m supposed to be having fun and relaxing, I think.

The waiting

There is nowhere to sit. I don’t shop in the duty-free. I find it very expensive and I buy stuff I don’t need in there. I pace. The plane leaves late. Is it my imagination or do all planes always leave late?

The plane

The plane is a flying sardine can. We sit and passengers argue about seats, change seats and try and squeeze more bags into the already over-full overhead bins. We sit and we sit. Then there is some sort of ruckus up front and a gang of uniformed men come in and start opening all the overhead bins. “Checking for excess bags,” they explain.

The end

I think holiday travel is fast coming to an end. It’s just not fun anymore!

Nearly 100,000 people marched through Dublin on Saturday

Ten years ago I bought a ticket from Boston to Dublin, Ireland, so that I could join the new Intel plant that was coming online in Leixlip, near Dublin. This is a classic case of déjà vu. Now I need to buy the ticket to get back to the States.

Ireland is in a state of collapse. They are facing tough government cutbacks, a deepening recession and bailouts for the banks. The Prime Minister has a ballooning budget deficit and is planning to introduce a pension levy on public sector workers and freeze their pay.

Ireland before the EU

I remember the days before Ireland joined the EU. It was then touted as one of the poorer countries in Europe. Ireland joined the European Communities, now called the European Union, in 1973 and its economy spiraled in order to keep up with its partners.

Before the current economic crash, Ireland had the fifth highest gross domestic product per capita and the seventh gross domestic product per capita considering purchasing power, and the fifth highest Human Development Index rank in the world.

The country also boasted the highest quality of life in the world, ranking first in the Economist Intelligence Unit’s Quality-of-life index. Ireland was ranked sixth on the Global Peace Index. Ireland also has high rankings for its education system, political freedom and civil rights.

Hi-tech moved in

On the heels of the tremendous development and the economic upswing that took place, the hi-tech industries of the world all fell in love with Ireland and huge manufacturing plants mushroomed. Everyone is there: Intel, Dell, IBM, HP, Oracle, Lotus, Microsoft and most other hi-tech names you can think of.

Linking Ireland

One month ago, in January 2009, it was announced that tens of millions of euro are to be invested in providing cheaper and faster broadband connections between Ireland and the US. They named this project Kelvin. This will be the first direct telecommunications link between North America and the north of Ireland. The project is a venture which involves the laying of an undersea cable that will cost some €30 million Euros and will be completed by March of next year by Hibernia Atlantic.

Down the tubes

Saturday’s crowd, estimated to be between 85,000 and 100,000 people, accused the government of leaving teachers, nurses, civil servants and construction workers with the bill for Ireland’s economic woes.

The protest comes ahead of strikes set for later this month by public sector clerical workers and bus drivers and marks a clear break in peaceful industrial relations, which had been an important contributor to the success of the “Celtic Tiger” economy.

A protracted and sharp drop in property prices, starting in March 2007, marked the beginning of Ireland’s economic decline which accelerated rapidly in late 2008 and early 2009 as job losses and falling output spread beyond the construction sector.

I’m not waiting

Thanks Ireland. It’s been a good 10 years for me. I enjoyed the Irish lasses and the Guinness stout. It’s time to move on. I’m flying out tomorrow, heading back to the U.S.

We might see a higher demand for payday loans among IBM workers if some of them suddenly have to move.

This year IBM has already laid off more than 4,000 employees, but these layoffs come with an interesting option: Would you like a job in India?

Go to where the outsourcing is?

IBM is among the countless companies that have started using outsourcing to cut costs. I guess they finally started feeling guilty for giving jobs to people overseas at the same time they were causing Americans to lose their jobs. So now, when an employee is on the chopping block they have the option of moving to a country where IBM is hiring instead of firing.

Prepare for payday loans

The way things are going in this country, I wouldn’t blame employees if they took the company up on its offer. For some, moving to another country might even be a benefit or fulfillment of a lifelong dream, who knows. However, moving is expensive; IBM says it will “help” with moving costs, which leads me to believe they won’t cover the full cost.

That’s where payday loans might help employees who were laid off, then rehired in another country, but haven’t gotten a paycheck in their new position yet.

Big hassle or dream come true?

Putting aside any political or ethical opinions on outsourcing in general, this might not be such a bad thing for some IBM employees. After all, they can chose from all of these countries: Argentina, Brazil, China, Czech Republic, Hungary, India, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, South Africa, Turkey, United Arab Emirates.

For people who love excitement and travel, getting payday loans to cover moving costs might be the ticket to fulfilling a fantasy.

A payday loan got me traveling – I love traveling and can be a little crazy about it, at times. Recently I heard the news, European flight rates have come down. Europe is one of my dream travel destinations. The fact that there is no better time than the present to make a trip to Europe, as flight charges are lower than ever before inspired me more.

Cash Advance?

I started toying with this idea but could not come up with a solution to add to my financial resources. It was only when I met my friend that things began falling in place for me. She said, in passing, that if it were not for some sort of cash advance help, she would not have been able to cope with some of her financial burdens. I casually inquired about the cash advance and when she started explaining, things started settling for me at a different level. After leaving her, I did a crazy thing. I got online and looked up her payday loan website, “personal money store” and applied for the loan. To my surprise, the loan got approved and the amount was transferred to my bank.

Got things going -

From there on, things started happening fast. I asked my boss for my well deserved vacation and he was all too happy to oblige; he even gave me a bonus to enjoy. I went home and told my husband that we can now take that much needed break. Though he was pleased, he gave me a guarded look, hesitating to ask whether we will be able to afford it.

My skeptical husband. . .

It was not the travel plan that was upsetting him, but paying for the trip that bothered him. He is a little tight with his finances, as he has been paying off our house loan. I told him not to worry, and that I will pay for the trip. He was skeptical. He knows I am not good with savings. I smiled and asked him to be more positive and told him that I can handle this. He simply asked how. I said I have a bonus, a little savings and a payday loan. He was surprised and asked for an explanation about the loan. I explained to him that it is one of the easiest loans one can get. You simply have to make an online application and if that got through the approval process, which you find out about in minutes, the amount is delivered right to your account. He teased me, saying I would not have been approved for the loan if he had not helped me maintain my credit. I said I did not go through a credit check or even use any faxing to get the loan. That really got him interested.

So we sat down and started planning our vacation. We did a little online research to bag cheap offers. There are tremendous opportunities to travel cheaply. We found a good one to suit our budget and also leave us enough to enjoy our trip.

So here I am off to enjoy my vacation with my payday loan…

Hi, my name is Shalu, I am 33 years old and I desperately need a payday loan to get me home to India. Two years ago I paid about $1,000 to some agency to find me work in the Gulf States where there are reputedly unlimited opportunities for young and energetic workers.

It worked out well. I arrived here in Dubai and soon found myself with a signed contract and working as a junior foreman on floors 45 to 50 on the new Union Bank Headquarters building. Great job! The money was good, the food was delicious and the girls were great.

Last month, at the end of December, I was suddenly told that there is no more work. I am also told that without work, I cannot remain here and must return home. The agency I paid to get me here has disappeared and I am stuck. I literally cannot move. No job and nowhere to go. No salary means no money for food. The money I made since I arrived here a year ago has all gone. Most of it I wired back home to my poor old parents in Uttar Pradesh in northern India. They are small farmers scratching a living from the soil on the Nepalese border.

Getting home

I can manage another week of this but that’s it. The next question is how to get home from here. An air-ticket is out of the question. I can probably find work on a freighter or an oil tanker heading out of the Gulf into the Indian Ocean, which means I will be closer to home – but still far away. Walking around the port here is hard work. Some of these tankers seem to be a mile long. I got shakes of the head at the last two I approached today. Let’s see what the third one says.

I wonder if I can manage to get a payday loan to buy a ticket out of here. We have that system in India and it’s a life saver. Any kind of ticket will do. Aah, India, how I miss you! What a great country you would be if there was only work for all of our 1.1 billion souls. How I would enjoy living there if I could find a decent job in construction.

Life on an oil tanker

Third time lucky! The third tanker grabbed me as a simple watchman. All I have to do is keep an eye on a pressure gauge. The minute the needle goes past the 40 mark, I have to hit the button on the side of the table. Easy, huh? And I get food, I get a bed to sleep on while that Bangladeshi chap, Rejwan, does the night watch, and, listen to this… I get paid!

This is the life for me. My days are spent in the sun under a big straw hat. I’m eating and sleeping well, I have made friends with Zahra, one of the girls in the kitchen and I am getting all kinds of ‘extra rations’. She is from Egypt and she has invited me to come to Cairo with her. Last night I proposed to her, she accepted and I’m going there. I will apply for a payday loan and buy 2 tickets for my parents to come to our wedding.

The New Kids on the Block may need some payday loans to get a regular tour together. The late 80s-early 90s boy band reunited for the first time for over a decade last year, recording and releasing a new album and embarking on the first tour since the band broke up in 1994. The band however has unveiled a plan for a short tour, in the most un-likeliest of venues, which is not usually reserved for bands that have enjoyed as much success as the New Kids – they will be performing on a cruise ship.

Group will cruise into a new tour in May

In the wake of the bands’ return to success, they have been mapping out touring engagements, some of which had them touring all over the United States last year, and plans to embark on a European tour, they also decided to pencil in a short tour on a cruise ship. The cruise ship tour will run a route between Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and the Bahamas, over a 3 day period. The first announcement was treated as a joke, but then the band confirmed in the press that it was serious. They are really going on a cruise ship tour – where they will be “serving pińa colada’s instead of drinking them!” Cruise ship engagements for bands are typically considered the arena of has-beens and one hit wonders.

New Kids on the Block were an entertainment phenomenon in the late 80s and early 90s, selling millions of albums and going on wildly successful tours worldwide. The band is credited with ushering in the “Boy Band Era,” which included other smash successes such as the Backstreet Boys and N’Sync, both of which had reunions, although short lived, in the last few years. The New Kids on the Block reunion was a successful one, as their reunion album has been certified Gold since its release, and a lengthy tour schedule for 2009 is already in place, so the cruise is a bit of a one off, like getting payday loans every now and again for a temporary shortfall.

The New Kids History

The band formed in Boston in the late 80s, and after some initial struggles, the band found a serious niche in the teen pop market, finally breaking into mainstream attention by the end of the 80s, receiving heavy airplay on radio and MTV, and starting concert tours that crossed the globe. Producer Maurice Starr put the group together as an alternative group to the New Edition, who the New Kids eventually eclipsed in sales, and also saturated the market with heavy merchandising. After years of touring began taking their toll, the group broke up in the middle of a tour in 1994, and reunion rumors persisted for years while the members pursued other careers, such as Donnie Wahlberg’s venture into acting, landing him roles in blockbusters such as Ransom, The Sixth Sense, and the Saw series. The group finally agreed to fully reunite for 2008, and have thus far committed wholly to it.

New Kids on the Cruise Ship

Despite the decline over the last few years in boy band popularity, the New Kids picked up almost exactly where they left off. If you need to get your finances back to where they were before a temporary setback, you can get your budget reunited with itself with the help of payday loans.

With families making their way home for the holidays, keep in mind that payday loans can help you keep your sanity.

You might be making the journey via plane, train, or automobile. My sympathies are with you. You may be eager to embrace your loved ones or you may be dreading your visit with “those” relatives. We all have stories to tell. Fond memories brought back by aromas in the kitchen, or nervous ticks due to flashbacks from screaming fits thrown by the unreasonable – - you have a listening ear with me. I have seen it all. From screams of joy upon arrival at the airport to being hit with projectile vomit in a trapped car – -I have learned how to be prepared.

Nostalgic or Nauseas?

Now don’t let my trip down memory lane leave you reaching for the Advil already! There is hope! There are a few keys to remember when you are making a road trip across country.

Make a list.

First, make it fun! However you’re traveling – - you are trapped in a small space for awhile – - so make a list of DVDs, music, or just think of silly games you can play while in transit. If you’re tapped with children, my advice would be to bring anything plastic. Bottles, zip lock bags, or even a tarp [if you can manage it].

Let go of expectations.

Secondly, turn “off” any tapes in your head about any expected behavior regarding your out-laws – - oops! – - I meant in-laws. Who knows what may have happened since the last time you’ve seen them? Also, consider how much effort it takes to turn those events over and over again in your mind? Let go of expectations. You won’t be disappointed and may even be surprised.

Don’t dwell on the bad, think of the good.

Thirdly, make a conscience effort to remember “the good’ about the ones you are travelling to see. Not the times your mother noticed how much weight you’ve gained [not that I would know anything about that!] or how your uncle chews with his mouth open and how he desperately needs to pluck his nose hairs. If this is too difficult, I advise you to look into being medicated before your arrival. Fourthly, grant some extra grace for those that you have hatched from that may still be inept. None of us are perfect, and I’m sure at one point or another you were not as lovely as you may be now.

Run away – or just change the subject.

Fifthly, investigate other alternatives to the same stressful situations. If, for example, you are trapped in the kitchen with gossipy gals – - run away! No, that’s probably not good advice so maybe just bluntly mention some other exciting news in your life that is an abrupt off ramp to the freeway that you were heading down.

Therapy?

The sixth thing to remember is to value what is most precious to you. It may not be the stringy casserole that Aunt Marion made, but instead it might be her reminiscing about the times when you were little [and how adorable you were]. And lastly, [thank heavens!], take a mental snapshot of everyone in the room. Burn it into your brain and strive to not duplicate any crazy behavior for the innocent generations to come. If it is too late for that, then consider payday loans for therapy sessions. Your children will thank you.

Remember the following:

Fun

Off

Remember

Grant

Investigate

Value

Everyone

If you do that, you will more than likely lengthen your life. Or take out payday loans and buy the first bus ticket home!
