Image from pumabydesign001.

There was a time when ACORN – the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now – lived by its ideals and had a bright future in the reform arena. But recent controversies which may have led to falling revenue, and hence a need for short term personal loans, will prompt ACORN to disband effective April 1. While some media critics simply view this as a rebranding of the organization, others view this as a long overdue end of a troubled era.

ACORN’s era of subprime manipulation ends

Jerry Chautin writes for The Huffington Post that ACORN may have played a significant role in the subprime mortgage mess that nearly sank America’s economy. In particular, it “pushed for more lenient benchmarks that would include all applicants. Their contention was that everyone deserves to own a home regardless of their income level or credit history.” That’s a noble sentiment, but lack of regulation and borrowers with eyes bigger than their budgets created a financial quagmire. That’s why the Wall Street Journal once claimed that ACORN and the Community Reinvestment Act “laid the foundation for the house of cards built out of subprime loans.”

ACORN admitted mistakes were made

And CEO Bertha Lewis knew that damage repair was necessary: “We will go to whatever lengths necessary to reestablish the public trust.” Lewis said this to the media when the subprime crisis was at its peak, Reuters reports. But in September of 2009: the ACORN prostitute video made its viral rounds. While James O’Keefe and company may have edited footage just enough to make the ACORN members seem guiltier than they were, the negative publicity never went away completely. The organization seemed to lack credibility.

Most of the 20 ACORN chapters have already disbanded

Add voter fraud into the already boiling mix and you can see that ACORN had problems. Despite numerous denials from ACORN, Congress voted to cut off federal funding to the community activist group and the U.S. Census Bureau terminated its partnership with ACORN. Reuters notes that a federal judge overturned the total funding prohibition, but the damage was already done.

It is unclear whether ACORN will file for bankruptcy or simply reorganize with private emergency money at this time.

In part one of this series on easy ways to make money online, I offered a few tips on using Facebook to make money, as well as suggestions like flipping websites and selling domain names. There are a lot of ways to create multiple income streams using nothing more than a computer and an Internet connection, and most can be done right from the privacy of your own home. Anyone who has ever needed a cash advance or a loan till payday should carefully consider these business options in order to avoid a future cash crunch. In part two of this series, we offer even more ideas for easy ways to make money online.

Work-at-home Jobs

If you’re not interested in owning your own business but the idea of working from home appeals to you, consider call center jobs that can be performed at home. Legitimate companies hire people to perform call center duties at home. Just as in working at a brick and mortar location, some require specific work hours and training, but there is no commute.

Sell Information Products

If you have a special skill or possess proficient knowledge in a certain area, why not capitalize on this and create an information product to sell to others? This can be done in the form of audiotapes, CDs, mp3 seminars, eBooks, workbooks, webinars and a variety of other different formats. Considering that you took the time to learn a certain skill, chances are that others are willing to pay you to teach them what you know.

Write web content

People visit web sites because they’re looking for information. If you’re adept at writing, learning to write for the web is one of the best ways to make money online. By learning how to use keywords for search engine optimization (SEO), with a little practice, a little self-promotion and a whole lot of effort, a new freelance writing niche can be carved where companies and individuals will hire you to create content for their web sites or blogs.

Sell web content

A person who knows how to write web content should also know how to sell web content online. Not every piece of work has to be pre-ordered by a client, but if you research niche topics and write relevant articles, special reports, white papers or case studies on these topics, there are also sites that specialize in helping you sell your work to others. Aside from third-party sites, content can also be sold on your individual site or blog.

Become a web researcher

Real estate investors, writers, non-profit workers, attorneys and others regularly rely on the research of others to support their duties. By specializing in a particular type of research and advertising your services to people who can benefit from this research, some people find that this is one of the easiest ways to make money online. In some cases, research may be paid for up front and others, like real estate investors, may pay for research as they profit by it. Either way, this is a valuable business niche that can be performed anywhere at any time.

Learning to make money online can be a long process, but just about anyone can do it. All of these startups are affordable and won’t require a short-term personal loan in order to make an investment. Those who are patient with themselves and who will take the initiative to learn various techniques can discover a niche business that may bring them incredible income rewards if they work hard and don’t give up.

Financial matters cannot be ignored

Surviving the loss of a spouse is never easy. Besides the obvious pain and loss felt, there is often an overwhelming amount of financial business to tend to. Unfortunately, credit card bills still needs to be paid, banking matters need to be appropriately handled, as do insurance matters. For those in an immediate cash crunch, a loan till payday or a cash advance may be arranged in order to gain a little breathing room. However, even with a short-term personal loan, it is very likely that other pressing financial matters will need attention, too.

Financial preparedness is empowering

While no one likes to think about being a surviving spouse, the sad reality is that people are placed in these situations every day. Knowing what to do ahead of time, however, can make a world of difference and can actually help ease some of the stress at that time. Therefore, everyone married or in a committed relationship owes it to themselves to know a few basic financial steps to recovery after the loss of a spouse or partner.

Here are a few financial tips that will help upon losing a spouse:

A New Banking Account

Open a bank account as a single person. Most people already have one, but if not, this is the time to open an individual checking and savings account for all future transactions.

Death Certificates

Request approximately fifteen certified copies of the departed person’s death certificate. The funeral home can help with this request or they can be obtained through the county office, which keeps a filing of marriage, birth and death certificates. These will be necessary in order to change deeds, names on bank accounts and other investments, and to collect any insurance monies.

Look for additional insurance policies

Call all of the credit card companies and banks that the departed held accounts with and inquire as to whether or not the person had any insurance policies with them. Often, companies offer insurance at a minimal cost and it is not uncommon for people to sign up for these on a whim. Loved ones are sometimes surprised to find out that their spouse had additional coverage through one of these means.

Contact credit card companies

If credit cards were held jointly, it is important to notify each credit card company of the spouse’s recent death. Be prepared that some companies will lower the credit limit on the card they offer, particularly in cases where the limit was based on the income of the deceased spouse.

Before paying credit card debt

If there is a balance remaining on credit cards that was created by the deceased spouse, it is best to speak to an executor or an attorney before paying these cards off. Often, debt matters are handled through what is called a probate court, which creates a schedule for paying remaining debts out of any monies that belong to the deceased person’s estate. There is no guarantee that matters will be handled this way, but as a precaution, it is best to speak to a professional first.

Update a will or trust

Keep in mind that the surviving spouse’s trust or will also may need to be changed. This is especially true if the living spouse intended to leave all of their assets to the spouse who has just departed. It is important to select a new beneficiary right away for things like life insurance policies, retirement plans and other investments.

When grieving, wealth education is empowering

Overall, the period of time immediately following the loss of a spouse is devastating. Amidst a sea of emotions, handling financial affairs can be a daunting task. This is a good time to lean on someone who is trustworthy and capable of helping with these matters. Always keep in mind that a personal loan or a cash advance is available to assist with immediate financial needs, which can make a world of difference when in the midst of such an upheaval. Finally, although the road ahead may seem difficult to navigate alone, it is not impossible. Although it is not the answer to every problem faced during a period of grief, a good financial education can empower a person to take the steps needed to begin rebuilding their future, once again.

Moving is expensive!

If you have ever moved before, then you know that it can be a financially draining experience and extra quick cash can save the day. Having just gone through this myself, I learned that as careful as I was about the expenses I would incur, there were surprises I did not expect, none of them in my favor. The first miscalculation was the amount of miles I would drive. Since most moving companies charge by the mile, this adds up to two separate cost; miles and gas. By the time I drove from California to Washington State, my moving finances were completely over budget. When I went to the rental company to turn in the rental truck, they presented me a bill I could not pay. I didn’t know what to do. My new job wasn’t starting for two weeks so I was really between paydays.

I needed help!

I asked friends for suggestions and one of them was to get an online cash advance. This way I could get cash now, and since my credit is not good, there were ways to get installment loans for people with bad credit. I got online and started looking. It wasn’t that hard. I found a link to the Personal Money Market and they advertised no credit check personal loans. Within two hours they deposited into my bank account the emergency money I needed to complete my move.

Why I was moving.

I was moving because the company I worked for in California was forced to lay off 90% of its work force. I know a lot of people this happened to last year. We are all scrambling to find work and many of us had to move out of state to seek new employment. I had worked for a company in California for 15 years. I found that it does not matter how secure our jobs were in the past, things change and we could all use a little help. I would recommend a short term personal loan for anyone who finds themselves in a situation where they need instant cash loans.

The government this week announced it is planing a new program called Cash for Caulkers. The program has great intentions: conserving energy and saving homeowners money. The idea is that the government will reimburse homeowners to the tune of 50 percent of the cost of any projects that conserve energy around the home.

Like I said, it has good intentions. I have a few reservations about this program, however, and the biggest one is its name. I’m not going to try to mask or hide my loyalties here: I am an Obama supporter all the way. However, that doesn’t mean I blindly agree with every White House decision, and this is an example of a shaky one. Don’t count on paying for home improvements with a short term personal loan and getting the government’s reimbursement in time to pay it back.

Invoking a laughingstock

Cash for Clunkers was an not a great program. Argue all you want, but it operated way behind schedule and ran out of money way ahead of schedule. Furthermore, it was the punchline to many jokes, angered a lot of people because they didn’t get the rebates they were expecting when the expected them and it got axed long before the deadline.

So, first and foremost, I think giving this program the name Cash for Caulkers is a bad idea because it strongly suggests that the same fate will befall this program. Furthermore, some of the holes in Cash for Caulkers regulation indicate it’s pretty likely.

Details on Cash for Caulkers

So far, there is no income limit for who can take advantage of Cash for Caulkers, only a $12,000 limit on reimbursement. So people can do up to $24,000 worth of projects that make their homes more energy efficient and be reimbursed for up to half of it.

Of course, the bill isn’t finished and there will likely be a lot of changes made before it’s finalized, but that’s the gist of it.

Too much too soon

The first thing that needs to be changed is the name. I probably wouldn’t have instantly reacted so negatively to this idea if it had a different name. Furthermore, I think only people who can’t afford to pay for the alterations themselves should be eligible in order to make the budget go farther.

Energy efficient homes can save their owners up to 20 percent per year on their power bills. People who can afford to get more energy efficient appliances and weatherize their houses have plenty of motivation to do it without government incentives.

Also, independent contractors will have to determine whether a project increases a home’s energy efficiency. There are a lot of ways people could defraud the government. I hate to say it, but I think Cash for Caulkers has a good chance of being more trouble, and money, than it’s worth. After all the money that has been pumped into the economy with little to show for it, it might be a good idea to wait until the White House has some positive results to show for its efforts before starting this program.

Obama wins the Nobel Prize: For world peace or Miller Time? (Photo: flickr.com)

Theodore Roosevelt (1906), Woodrow Wilson (1919) and Jimmy Carter (2002) preceded him in winning. Now President Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize. This time, however, some people are skeptical. The Norwegian Nobel Committee says he won due to his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples,” but it remains to be seen whether his nuclear disarmament efforts will bear fruit. And with the rate at which taxpayer dollars are being used to bail nearly everything and everyone one, we may need a short term personal loan or two to fund the missile disposal.

Jump the Shark Lately?

If you ask the Taliban (and I know they’re the first people most of us consult in matters of peace), Obama’s choice as the Nobel Peace Prize recipient is questionable. Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid exclaimed to Reuters via telephone, “The Nobel prize for peace? Obama should have won the ‘Nobel Prize for escalating violence and killing civilians.’” Of course, you can’t please everyone all the time. But perhaps we should have waited to see if peace is the actual result before giving President Obama the award. That’s reasonable, and I’m not Taliban.

Some World Leaders Agree

Japanese President Yukio Hatoyama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel appear to look at the Obama Nobel Prize from the standpoint of possible future gains. They think it should encourage other nations to assist him in achieving the nuclear disarmament goal.

Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat sees it as a sign for the Middle East that peace in their time is possible. He’d like to see a return to the Israel/Palestine borders that existed in 1967, where Israel would withdraw and Palestine would be left to exist as an independent state with Jerusalem as the capital city. As Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak sees it, the Obama Nobel Prize should enhance the America president’s ability “to contribute to establishing regional peace in the Middle East and a settlement between us and the Palestinians that will bring security, prosperity and growth to all the peoples of the region.” Just exactly where the lines in the sand would be drawn with such a settlement tends to fuel the flame of conflict, however. We’ll see what Obama can do there, if anything.

Hamas Has a Bone to Pick

What a shocker! Despite Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck’s contention Barack Hussein Obama is a pal of radical Islam, Hamas is up in arms over the Obama Nobel Prize. I hope Glenn doesn’t see what they’re saying about Obama’s policy, because he may not have enough tears to go around. Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh told Reuters that “(Unless U.S. policy changes regarding) recognizing the rights of the Palestinian people, I would think such a prize would be useless.”

“Waiting For Deeds, Not Words”

That’s what Lebanese Hezbollah parliament member Hassan Fadallah had to say about the Obama Nobel Prize. Unfortunately, that’s what many Americans are saying about President Obama on the domestic front so far, but I’m willing to give him more time. Being president is just among the toughest jobs imaginable, and for that reason I’m not quite so willing as some to jump on the “bash George Bush” bandwagon as others. President Obama certainly doesn’t lack in oratory skills, but I believe we need to let the sand of time pass before we even begin to talk about his legacy. I still think he’s in his “probationary period,” to use corporate talk. There’s much to do in a world gripped by financial difficulty.

But Expectations Are Rising

Will the Obama Nobel Prize raise the pressure on America’s president? Irene Khan of Amnesty International thinks so. “We look to him for decisive action to pursue peace with justice in the Middle East, end the rollback on human rights in the name of counter terrorism and reinforce the fight against poverty at a time of economic crisis,” she said.

Other notable world figures like Poland’s Lech Walesa and South Africa’s Desmond Tutu see promise in Obama, but they tend to agree that we need to see how things play out.

What Won Obama the Nobel Prize?

To cast so levity on the Obama Nobel Prize situation, humorist Andy Borowitz wrote that it was “Beergate” that tipped the tap. The beer summit between President Obama, Henry Louis Gates and James Crowley (invite Aleister and you would have had a different summit altogether) supposedly swayed the Nobel Prize Committee. In Borowitz’s version of events, a Nobel official claimed that “someone brought up the beer summit, and we all agreed that that was awesome.” Not only that, but it was “a tribute to the healing power of beer.”

[apply_button float="right"]

So long as you aren’t going to drive or operate heavy machinery and you have a vital political summit to host, perhaps the healing power of hops can set you to stepping. If recessionary economics set upon your budget, perhaps a short term personal loan can help with the morning after.

With great power comes great responsibility

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-50610" title="Montgomery Animal Shelter closing" src="http://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/485928688_ddd3dd41911-200x134.jpg" alt="Don't worry, the cats who were at the Montgomery Animal Shelter are safe.
Everyone knows the Internet is a powerful thing. Through massive social networking sites, you can get a message to numerous people instantly. However, the Montgomery Animal Shelter closing story is an example of the fact that if you’re going to disseminate a message to the masses, you’d better make sure it’s true.

First, let’s get one thing straight. The Montgomery Animal Shelter is actually the Montgomery County Texas Humane Society. The Montgomery Animal Shelter closing is not in New Jersey, Tennessee or Pennsylvania. The Montgomery County animal shelter in Pennsylvania has been swamped with calls about people concerned for the animals’ lives, according to Philly.com.

More rumors go viral

Social networking can be a great way to inform people about getting a short term personal loan, promote your business and even make money. But it can also be a way of spreading lies and needlessly getting people all riled up.

The other huge misconception out there, which has run rampant on Facebook and Twitter, is that because of the Montgomery Animal Shelter closing, all of the animals will be put to sleep. Several sources, including the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Humane Society of Montgomery and the Montgomery County News confirm that all of the animals have been adopted.

Who comes up with this stuff?

The News PK wrote that the Montgomery County Animal Shelter was closing after animal control officers found decomposing dogs in the building. However, the reason for the Montgomery County Animal Shelter closing is that the organization’s lease was up, and their request for funding to maintain the facility was denied.

So there were no dead dogs, there will be no dead dogs, all the animals are safe and the Montgomery Animal Shelter closing was simply a money matter. Oh yeah, and it’s the Montgomery Animal Shelter in Texas. So that should just about clear everything up.

More about the Montgomery Animal Shelter

It really is a shame that the Montgomery County Texas Humane Society is vacating its building. The shelter’s web site reports that the Humane Society of Montgomery will now direct its efforts toward starting a spay and neuter campaign and program, but it doesn’t sound like they’ll be getting a new building to house strays and unwanted pets anytime soon.

The Montgomery County Animal Shelter opened its doors in 1972. It’s disappointing to see a shelter that has been housing animals for 37 years get shut down. State budgets just aren’t what they used to be.

Focus on reality

Animal shelters in Tennessee, New Jersey and Pennsylvania, all having “Montgomery” in their monikers, were swamped with calls all weekend from people worried that their local shelters were closing. Apparently the Tennessee rumor started because of a typo in a newspaper in which “TN” was printed in a headline instead of “TX.”

In the old days, when there were mistakes in a newspaper headline, the locals would see it, usually read the correction about it the next day, and that’s as far as it went. Maybe a few people would spread something false to a few other people by phone. The spreading of all of the false rumors about the Montgomery Animal Shelter closing didn’t really do too much harm to anyone, besides inconveniencing the other shelters. But let this be a lesson that tales spread on the internet elicit big responses, so be careful what you put out there.
