So long as the taxpayers aren’t putting up his salary while he does it and his wife and children are set for a better life away from him first, I don’t have a problem. Electricity, natural gas, wireless communications, various cable systems, international trade, tourism and women and minority business ventures were all fall under the umbrella of the Utilities & Commerce Committee. So yes, I suppose Mike Duvall was powerful. He’ll probably find a consulting job somewhere.

As for Heidi Dejong Barsuglia, I hope she picks up the pieces and does right by her family and children. The road for her will definitely be more difficult. What Darnell discovered the next morning is a parent’s nightmare made real. The eight-foot Burmese python was wrapped around little Shaunnia Hare, its teeth embedded in her head in order to hang on to its prey. The snake didn’t have an axe to grind with the child, it isn’t an evil creature (or a good one, for that matter). Nature laughs at “good vs. evil.” Survival has neither the time nor the room for such inventions.  The snake was not secured, and it was hungry. It was operating on instinct. Tragically, a little girl died.

It appears Democratic lawmakers are at least willing to put the socialized medicine option out there to see if it sticks. But most do not agree with President Obama’s hearty endorsement of it. They want to continue to offer improved private options.

David Espo reports for the Associated Press that senior House Democrats are “considering slapping an unspecified financial penalty on anyone who refuses to purchase affordable health insurance.” Furthermore, Democrats are considering a new tax on certain insurance benefits as a means of covering those who have been uninsured.

Choice A or Choice B

Private insurance or the government option are your choices. Under the House Democratic plan, “individuals and small businesses would be able to purchase coverage from a health exchange and the government would require all plans to contain a minimum benefit,” writes Espo. One welcome aspect of this is that applicants would be exempt from rejection or a higher premium due to pre-existing conditions.

Then there’s the Medicaid upgrade option. Democrats are seeking a uniform level of coverage across the nation. A revamped Medicaid would also up the payments to health professionals (thanks to a tax hike, doubtless).

“Play or pay”

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., who is the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, has confirmed that there will be a penalty for those who refuse to buy coverage they can afford. It’s “play or pay.” Waivers would be available for those who could not cover the cost of insurance.

“There is no use having a mandate without a contribution,” he said.

Democratic leaders hope to pass legislation in both houses by early August. Then they hope that a compromise measure will be ready for the president’s signature by the fall.

$1 trillion over 10 years

Financing socialized medicine as Obama envisions it could cost $1 trillion over the next decade, experts predict. Cutting Medicare payments to home health care, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, hospitals and others to cover the expense has been considered, but it is unclear how effective that would be at closing the expense gap. My Two Cents

Some people have been calling Wanda Sykes a crazed liberal and some folks have lashed out at Rush Limbaugh, calling him weak, as if he initiated the backlash against Ms. Sykes. Though Wanda had very strong opinions of Mr. Limbaugh (after all she said she wants his kidneys to fail) he refused to make any public statements directed to or about Sykes and her comments. I believe that’s the best decision for him to make. When my feet found the floor Saturday morning, a vague recollection was already pushing its way through the fog in my head. I shuffled bleary-eyed toward the kitchen. Getting Ready to Go

Getting My Hair Raised

Earlier in the day as I drove through town, I had noticed promotional posters for a special guest, Helen Davis. I wasn’t familiar with the name, but I had learned a long time ago that great and famous rarely have much in common.

Refusing a Frozen Finale

The party ended with a plunge into the icy lake on Sunday morning. Being warm-blooded, I opted out, but my return trip through the Rockies was an adequately grand finale. The Boogie organizers had promised that this year’s event would be even better than last year’s, and it was. I wouldn’t have believed it could be true, had I not been there to witness it.

Marking Next Year’s Calendar

I shuffled into my kitchen and tossed my junk on the table. I reached for an espresso cup, but changed my mind and reached instead for a pen. I flipped through the months of the calendar hanging on the wall above the espresso machine, found the date for next year’s Boogie, and wrote: Best-Ever Canadian Winter Blues Boogie. Then I ground the coffee.
