Basic Business Principles

Small business ideas are great for starting small. If you don't have lots of capital, try to start an online business!

We have all considered it and some of us are either naturally good at it or require a lot of research and development before we find the perfect business idea. A lot of people frown on the prospect of starting a business and usually put it in the same category as winning the lottery or finding a bag full of cash. These people are the same ones who don’t have a lot of ambition and would never be able to create a business with that train of thought, anyway. While a good dose of luck should never be wasted, it isn’t about luck when it comes to business. What it is about is a fine blend of knowledge, common sense, market research and the panache required to at least give it a shot.

Businesses Do Fail

There are many reasons why a business can fail. Numerous studies show that well over 70 percent will fail in the first year. Some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs failed miserably many times before they finally learned the ropes and achieved lift off. Henry Ford failed several times before he won the title of industry leader. Another example is Walt Disney, who was fired from a newspaper because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas” and went bankrupt several times. Even his proposed theme park was initially rejected by the city of Anaheim on the grounds that “it would only attract riffraff.” It would be wise to study some of these businessmen and learn from their mistakes before you make your own. I will tell you though that the most common reason for business failure is an extreme lack of research. Other reasons why businesses fail could include:

Starting for the wrong reasons – i.e., just to make money

Entering a market the owner has no idea about

Insufficient capital – all businesses require input of some kind, whether it be monetary or otherwise

Not following their business plan – business plans aren’t created just to tell the investors you know what you are doing. They are there to serve as a guide to help you through all the stages of your business

Poor management

What Do People Want?

The basic principles behind a successful business are the following: having the ability to offer goods and/or services and to be able to ascertain what people are willing to pay for. There are a million other aspects to running and keeping a business afloat that are all learnable. The initial idea, however, is the hardest part. It’s the one you have no doubt found yourself pondering. Take some time to think about what people want and what people need and how you can give it to them. People will happily pay for something if it has some use to them. Have a look at this article by Paul Graham, written in 2005. He offers some insight into the fact that new entrepreneurs often consider what “they” want and not what “other” people want.

Start Small

Have you heard the idea: “Take a guess what your startup costs will be, then multiply it by 10 and you will have a closer answer?” It is more than likely that starting a business will be expensive and that is usually the factor that causes the majority of people to give up. A lot of research will help you determine a more accurate answer, but we can return to one of the most basic principles of entrepreneurship for guidance:

How Can You Take Something that Costs Nothing and Sell for Something?

It is all about getting the most profit for your buck, but understandably this depends on which avenue you have chosen to pursue. Starting a business on the World Wide Web can cost you next to nothing with fewer risks when compared to that of a physical business. We all want to own large enterprises and grow empires, but unless you have a phenomenal idea and access to an adventurous investor, the only way to start up is by starting small. That way, even if your business does fail, you can learn from your mistakes and your house won’t be up for auction.

Need a tune up when it comes to home business ideas?

There are so many aspects to this life we live, yet most of us are still stumped when it comes to thinking of legitimate business ideas. While the concept is simple, there are other factors such as competition or finance which may end it before it has begun. But if you don’t try, you will not succeed and that is a fact. It’s time to take the first step to changing your lifestyle forever. In this article, I would like to explore a few start-up business ideas which might help get your creative juices flowing.

Why Depend On Others – Become Self Employed!

When people explain their reasons for not wanting to become self employed, the number one excuse they use is because they like the security. I can understand the idea of security, but the definition of security should not involve working long, arduous hours with little reward and the knowledge that your “boss” upstairs has the power to end your comfort zone on a whim. Please don’t be misled, because I am not by any means suggesting that if you have your own business you will work fewer hours. In all odds, you will work more hours but you will be content doing so because it will be your own creation that is benefitting from the extra work. Many people do in fact enjoy their jobs and fair play to them, but for those of you who are tired to death of it all, why not become self-employed?

A Few Business Ideas

When considering business ideas that will work well for you, it would be wise to take some time and think about what you enjoy. If you could make work for yourself by doing something you enjoy, then you would be living the dream, rich or not. As an added bonus, you are most likely to succeed, because doing something you love affords the motivation to stay strong – and motivation is one of the key requirements to starting a business. Whether you would like to work away or from home, there are millions of ideas out there. Find one that works for you. Start researching, because there is nothing you can’t do. All you need is knowledge, and luckily that’s free to learn (wisdom is the expensive one). Below are a few ideas to help you grasp what is possible:

Open a recording studio

Become a professional writer or photographer

Start a window cleaning business

Become a music teacher

Create your own informative Web site

Sell products online

Start your own mobile mechanic company

Become a consultant in a familiar field

Become an arts and crafts dealer

Start a paintball business

If you are a martial artist, consider opening your own dojo

Create your own handyman business

Do Some Research Before Development

I implore you to have a look around for further motivational ideas. If you are serious and give it everything you have, you will eventually succeed. It isn’t rocket science, as there are a wide variety of people who have pulled it off. What it comes down to is the will and motivation to at least try. Just remember that once you have found an avenue to pursue to do plenty of research as well as market research on the product or service you will be offering.

In many countries outside the U.S., cell phones have replaced credit cards. In Japan and Finland, for example, travelers rarely carry cash, checks or credit cards, but rather swipe their phones or send text messages to pay for train rides.

In the U.S., the cell phone hasn’t yet reached this capability, mostly because of carriers who cannot settle on how that service’s revenues would be divided amongst each company. One up-and-coming company, however, thinks it just may have a handle on how to make it work. Paymo is a mobile payment network and it has so far confirmed deals with AT&T, T-Mobile, Cellular One and Virgin Mobile, allowing consumers to make online purchases with their phones.

Their business model is quick and simple. When a consumer decides to purchase an item, they click on a Paymo logo, much like the PayPal logo. This takes them to the online checkout area where they enter their cell phone number. A text is sent via Paymo to their cell phone asking for a verification on the purchase. Once the customer replies, the transaction is verified and completed. The item will then be either deducted from the owner’s prepaid account or be itemized on their next cell phone bill.

Paymo in the U.S.

Paymo is used in about 45 countries, and it’s slowly working its way into the online business world. Credit card companies, banks and mobile carriers have tried in the past to work out a deal that allows for online pay tied to cell phone accounts. So far two methods have been tried in the U.S. The first allows customers to wave their phones in front of a reader for payment. The second allows them to pay via a text message confirmation process. Neither one has taken off with the American public.

Paymo, a San Francisco-based company, still thinks paying with cell phones will become mainstream in the U.S. once people understand its true value. CEO and co-founder Paul McGuire stated, “Paymo will succeed by serving cell phone and website users who don’t have credit cards. They want to buy stuff online but need an easy way to pay. And what better way than via a mobile-phone account?”

Will cell phone companies bite?

Most cell phone companies supplement their phone packages with additional items, such as ringtones, wallpapers, games, news, e-mail retrieval and web-browsing. Because of the economy, they are looking for more revenue-building ways to bring services to consumers.

Paymo believes it has the perfect solution and is hoping to woo cell phone companies into using their product. With Paymo’s proposal, cell phone carriers would walk away with 20-50percent of revenues generated by online sales. The remainder would go to the retailer and Paymo.

Paymo is no longer alone

Although Paymo does have an aggressive pay structure, it is not alone in trying to break into the cell phone payment market. PayPal has been working on the same thing for a few years now and met with the same success rate. Zong and Mobilcash are two more companies working hard make cell phones replace credit cards. With this type of competition it will be hard for Paymo to gain its market share in the US.
