Regulators from the FDIC have filed lawsuits against four former IndyMac executives. The accusation is that IndyMac bank was negligent in offering mortgages and instant loans online to borrowers who were not qualified. The lawsuit seeks to recoup $300 million of the $12.7 billion taxpayers lost when IndyMac failed.

The failure of IndyMac

The failure of IndyMac was the biggest failure of any bank in United States history. The bank had over $30 billion is assets. The FDIC stepped in, and the agency lost about $12.7 billion out of the federal deposit insurance fund. Part of the cause of this bank failure was a huge number of bad secured personal loan mortgages to unqualified borrowers.

Four former officials in the IndyMac Homebuilder division have been charged with negligence by the FDIC. The CEO, two Chief Lending Officers, and the Chief Credit Officer have all been charged. In short, the FDIC believes that all four of these officials knew about and approved loans that were bad.

The FDIC alleges that IndyMac made numerous no fax loans to borrowers they knew would not be able to pay them back. Some borrowers had bad credit histories, others had no collateral. These loans played a very large part in the collapse of the mortgage market. The FDIC seized the bank and its assets in order to keep depositors from losing their money.

The response of IndyMac

When the charges were filed against former IndyMac executives, the response was swift. A lawyer for two of the four executives released a statement saying:

The charges by the FDIC are completely false and we will vigorously defend against them. All loans within the Homebuilder Division met strict underwriting standards, including significant documentation requirements, and were issued to creditworthy homebuilders. … Loans and lending procedures from this management team were regularly reviewed by multiple regulators and auditors, and given satisfactory marks or better.”

Missing money or unclaimed money that comes into the possession of a police department during criminal investigations is typically kept safely in the police department’s property/evidence room. There’s nothing out of the ordinary about that. However, if that missing money disappears for no good reason, the winds of suspicion begin to blow. In this case, they’re blowing over Lake Michigan, and the Muskegon Heights Police department is under investigation by Michigan State Police because some missing money and unclaimed money from the property room has been claimed by parties unknown, reports Michigan Live. Needless to say, the people of the small town of 12,000-plus that sits on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan and is 200 miles west of Detroit don’t know whether their law enforcement can be trusted.

That missing money isn’t exactly unclaimed money now

Rather than obtaining unclaimed money through honest means like no fax loans, allegations are that the Muskegon Heights Police department (certain officers, to be specific) have skimmed off the top of the missing money in evidence. Ron Rake, who back in March 2010 was the acting chief of the Muskegon Heights Police Department, requested the investigation. Interestingly, Rake recently resigned from the department and became a deputy for the Muskegon County Sheriff, says Michigan Live. A department press release indicated that the Michigan State Police had “received an audit of some possible discrepancies” that pointed toward missing money from the property room on the Muskegon Heights Police Department. Michigan State Police wish to “safeguard the integrity of the investigative process” at this time to ensure impartiality, which means that they won’t be releasing any information until their missing money investigation is complete. At that time, the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office will review the findings and decide whether it will be necessary to file criminal charges against any members of the Muskegon Police Department.

This afternoon, a Greyhound driver on a New Hampshire bus parked, put on the flashers, and ran for the hills. Why? There was a Greyhound bus bomb scare. A passenger on the New Hampshire bus called 911 to report that there was an “explosive device” on board. That’s enough to make almost anyone consider no fax loans to take the train instead. This suspected Greyhound bus bomb comes just days after an attempted bombing in New York City and a major explosion at an Army facility.

The New Hampshire bus bomb scare came after an unidentified passenger called 911. Police Captain Mike Schwartz said that the call was “based on someone’s observations” as opposed to a stated threat. For almost two hours after the 911 call, passengers remained on the New Hampshire bus. Eventually 17 passengers left the bus, one at a time, with their hands over their head. The driver and one passenger are still being questioned.

As soon as the New Hampshire bus bomb report was called in, state authorities responded. Within an hour, there were representatives of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives on the scene. The FBI also sent officers to work with the state bomb disposal unit and local police officers that were on the scene. News helicopters were restricted from overhead flight, and nearby buildings were evacuated.

One New Hampshire bus passenger questioned

Though there were 18 passengers as well as the driver on the New Hampshire bus, only 17 passengers have disembarked. Officials have not revealed if this was an ongoing hostage situation, or if the remaining passenger is a suspect. They will only say that they are questioning the passenger. The New Hampshire Greyhound bus was on a route that would have taken it from Bangor, Maine to Boston and New York City.

Is there a deeper chocolate depression link? From Wikimedia Commons.

It is a known phenomenon that some people eat chocolate to relieve depression, but there is growing concern about whether the chocolate-depression relationship is a vicious cycle.  A recent study found that people who eat the most chocolate are more likely to suffer from depression. The study was headed by Dr. Natalie Rose, MD, of the University of San Diego, and was published in a recent issue of Archives of Internal Medicine.  I could go for my own chocolate study about now, but I don’t want to run for short term loans to pay the dentist and the personal trainer I’d need.

Chocolate depression link

The study of the chocolate depression link, as reported by WebMD, was conducted on 931 individuals in the San Diego area. Of the test subjects, those who ate 8.4 servings or more per month tested positive for possible depression. Those who ate 5.4 servings or fewer did not test positive for depression. Individuals who ate 11.8 servings or more monthly tested positive for possibly having major depression, a worse form of the disease.  The study was done via questionnaire, and none were on anti-depressant medication.

No link known at present

In the same study, Dr. Rose, et al., did not conclude causality was implied, or that one was caused by the other.  (Correlation, as ever, does not imply causality.)  The authors decided that “Future studies are required to elucidate the foundation of the association and whether chocolate has a role in depression, as cause or cure.” This doesn’t, essentially mean that any concrete link between the two has been established, so don’t go getting no fax loans to lobby the FDA to ban chocolate just yet.

What this all means

People are known to eat chocolate when depressed. Eating sweets releases endorphins which counteract depression.  In other words, the study determined that people who ate more chocolate were likely to be more depressed. Chocolate is one of the many things that naturally works in the same capacity.

Many high fat foods, such as french fries, pizza and a lot of preserved and processed foods, a maligned mainstay of the American diet, use more salt than the IOM or American Medical Association would like. The American Medical Association has asserted, according to USA Today, that if restaurants and other food companies were to reduce sodium content by half over the next 10 years, about 150,000 fewer people would die as a result.  The IOM states that normal intake is 3,400 milligrams daily, over twice the recommended 1,500 milligrams.

Number one cause of death for U.S. Adults is heart disease

The number one killer of Americans is known to be heart disease. It has long been suspected that it is tied to our diet.  Sodium intake that’s too high is known to lead to higher blood pressure, a common cause of heart disease, and a heart transplant even on the insurance of Croesus costs more than no fax loans can possibly cover.  If there is possibly merit to limiting sodium levels, perhaps it’s worth looking into.

Last Saturday, the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland began to shake, shiver and spit out lava and steam. Iceland volcanic activity has a long history, though this particular volcano hasn’t shown any volcanic activity for almost 200 years. A larger concern than the Iceland volcanic activity of Eyjafjallajokull, though, is the potential eruption of Katla, the much larger nearby volcano. If Iceland volcanic activity continues to increase, the atmosphere could be darkened with ash that could lead to global cooling that no fax loans for scientists could solve.

Volcanic activity is a notoriously difficult-to-predict phenomenon. However, volcanic activity on Iceland has historically been preceded by seismic activity, much like the recent earthquakes around the world.

In 1783, the volcanic gasses and ash that were released from that Iceland volcanic activity were enough to create a globe-cooling smog. The gasses were so thick that some residents of the British Isles died from being poisoned by the gas alone. Crop production across Europe fell, causing famine across the continent. The winter of 1794 was the longest and coldest winter on record in North America — so cold that the Mississippi river froze in New Orleans. In 1991, Chile’s Mount Pinatubo erupted, spewed ash and gasses into the atmosphere, and cooled the globe by about 4 degrees for a full year.

Not necessarily a nightmare scenario

While the stories of what can happen when Iceland volcanic activity starts to rise can be the stuff of Hollywood movies, that doesn’t mean it will be the worst-case scenario. The last time Eyjafjallajokull erupted, it was a two-year-long “lazy” eruption in 1821 that did not cause any major environmental effects outside of Iceland.

Volcanoes in Iceland are unique, however, in that their eruptions can be even more difficult to predict because of the glaciers they sit under. In the end, the best bet is to get a personal loan to stock up your emergency supplies, but don’t lock yourselves in underground bunkers quite yet.

It takes a lot of study to really understand Asperger’s disease, but here is a crash course to get you started.

Asperger’s disease affects behavior

The main way in which Asperger’s disease manifests itself is through social interaction — or lack thereof. People with Asperger’s disease might appear to have some type of strange obsessive-compulsive disorder, as they engage in repetitive behavior patterns. Asperger’s syndrome is considered a high-functioning form of autism because those who have it can generally function in society, just with a certain degree of awkwardness. President of the United States Barack Obama on Sunday night appeared on both “60 Minutes” and a special Oprah Winfrey show called “Christmas at the White House.” As usual, more people are interested in what happened on Oprah’s show than anything else. Specifically, the masses are evaluating whether they agree with Obama’s figurative report card, which he filled out himself.

Oprah asked Obama what grade he’d give himself on his time thus far in office. “A good, solid B-plus,” he said. Popularity contest

Though Oprah and Obama are decidedly pretty chummy, Oprah will be Oprah. She asked the president to respond to his dwindling popularity in the polls. Obama said he was surprised his numbers had held up as well as they did with 10 percent of the population unemployed.

Ruby’s Diner, a casual dining chain based in Newport Beach, Calif., has teamed with CureDuchenne to raise money to find a cure for Duchenne Musuclar Dystrophy. If you print out a flier from the CureDuchenne web site and bring it into Ruby’s Diner in Corona Del Mar, the diner will donate 20 percent of food and non-alcoholic beverage sales to CureDuchenne.

The flier is good today through Friday, but don’t rush out for no fax loans just so you can take advantage of the offer this week. The same Ruby’s Diner, in Corona Del Mar, Calif., will run the same promotion again Aug. 24-28. You can print fliers today for both time periods.

About CureDuchenne

CureDuchenne’s web site says last year the organization funded $1 million in research toward curing Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

“CureDuchenne brings a different perspective to DMD research. Many research projects are now seeing success in lab animal models. As our expertise has been in business, our goal is to identify research that has the most likelihood of making it to clinical trials and then provide the financial bridge that will take it from the lab and into human trials,” says CureDuchenne’s web site.

Founders Paul and Debra Miller are the founders of CureDuchenne, and the web site says they have a 10-year-old son who has Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

About DMD

CureDuchenne is dedicated specifically to funding research for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the “leading genetic killer of young boys worldwide,” says the web site. It also says it is the most common of the 40 known neuromuscular diseases. The CureDuchenne web site says:

“Boys with Duchenne are typically diagnosed before the age of five. Their muscles swell and joints become restricted. They are easily fatigued and have difficulty keeping up with others their age. Most Duchenne boys need a wheelchair between the ages of 10 and 12. The simplest of tasks, such as holding a fork or turning over in bed, becomes very difficult. In the later stages, heart and breathing muscles begin to fail. Historically, most boys with Duchenne have not survived their teens.”
