The Big Ten conference is the largest Division 1 athletic conference in the country. Though the Big Ten started as the Big Nine, it has been adding teams for years. In 2011, the Big Ten will be twelve teams, but the new Big Ten logo has been simplified.

New Big Ten logo

The new Big Ten logo, revealed on Monday morning, does away with attempts to integrate numbers into the text. When the Big Ten included 11 teams, the Big Ten logo integrated the number 11. Because the new Big Ten logo would have to integrate 12 teams, the designers have chosen a simpler option. The “Big Ten” logo is simply the two words “Big” and “Ten.” The “I” and “G” of “Big” suggest the number 10. It is a very simple logo that is easy to reproduce just about everywhere.

Integrating the new Big Ten logo

The new Big Ten logo integrates the logos of the 12 teams in two groups. There are now six “Legends” teams and six “Leaders” teams. There are 10 different options for the new Big Ten logo, some of which integrate the “Legends” and “Leaders” team logos. In short, the new Big Ten logo is as much of a compromise as is possible. The Big Ten logo is a minor issue when it comes to college football, but the millions — if not billions — of dollars involved definitely is anything but a minor issue.

Big Ten versus Big 12 conference

At the point the Big Ten conference was adding a 12th member, there was discussion of renaming the conference Big 12. However, the Big 12 conference already exists. The most interesting aspect of the Big 12 versus Big Ten conference is that the Big Ten will now have 12 members, and the Big 12 conference is dropping down to 10 members. The new Big Ten logo integrates all 12 members but doesn’t change the name.
