Several Washington D.C. lawmakers have been caught up in an ethics investigation over VIP cash loans given to their staffs. These “VIP” or “sweetheart” loans were all made by Countrywide, which was recently purchased by Bank of America. These VIP cash advances may end up causing ethical or legal problems for a few senators.

Countrywide’s VIP loans

In documents recently released by Bank of America, it was revealed that Countrywide wrote a huge number of “sweetheart” loans. These low interest rate, no credit check loan products appear to have been targeted to senators’ staffs. Republican Senator Issa, who filed an ethics complaint stemming from these loans, points out a “high concentration” of loans to D.C. staffers. The theory is that Countrywide wrote these fast cash loans in hopes of influencing Senator’s staff members and the Senators. The loans were made mostly in 2002 and 2003.

Ethics complaints over loans

Senator Issa filed the ethics complaints against several senators. Last year, Senator Dodd and Senator Conrad were both “scolded” by the Ethics Committee. These two senators were told to “be more careful to avoid the appearance of favoritism from Countrywide.” Despite the scolding, both senators were cleared of actual rules violations. Senator Robert Bennett has been named in the most recent ethics complaint. Twelve of the 30 named “VIP loans” went to members of his staff.

Naming the loan recipients

The Senate Committee on Oversight and Government Reform is doing the latest investigation on Countrywide VIP cheap loans. A subpoena has been issued to Bank of America to provide all loan documents where the VIP loan department issued loans to borrowers who listed “U.S. Senate” as their employer. Thus far, Bank of America has provided 37,000 documents related to Countrywide and their lending practices. If the loan recipients are actually named, it could be a serious issue in upcoming elections.

Senator Burnett responds

Republican Senator Burnett, who is not running for re-election, has responded in detail to the ethics complaint filed against him. In short, Senator Burnett said that he does not make it a point to find out where his staffers do their banking. Mortgages and unsecured loans, he said, are personal matters that he did not specifically ask his employees about.

Richard Russell has made a name for himself as a fortune teller for investors seeking to stay a step ahead of the stock market. In his latest Dow Theory Letter prediction Tuesday, Russell forecasts a disastrous stock market crash that will render America unrecognizable by the end of 2010. Some other pundits who try to divine future events by analyzing and comparing stock market trends are also forecasting a crash.

Richard Russell’s Dow Theory Letters

Richard Russell’s Dow Theory Letters have gained a huge following in financial circles for the author’s comments, observations and stock market philosophy. Russell covers the U.S. stock market, foreign markets, bonds, precious metals, commodities, politics and economics. In the latest Dow Theory Letter, Business Insider reports that Russell advises investors to get out of the stock market altogether, avoid fast cash loans, eliminate debt and convert all wealth into liquid assets:

Do your friends a favor. Tell them to “batten down the hatches” because there’s a HARD RAIN coming. Tell them to get out of debt and sell anything they can sell (and don’t need) in order to get liquid. Tell them that Richard Russell says that by the end of this year they won’t recognize the country. They’ll retort, “How the dickens does Russell know — who told him?” Tell them the stock market told him.

Global Macro Investor agrees

Richard Russell has a kindred spirit in Raoul Pal — although Pal thinks the stock market apocalypse will happen in a matter of days or weeks, instead of months. Pal is a former Goldman Sachs executive who authors the Global Macro Investor, a independent research publication. Pal claims to have been observing a classic stock market pattern that has resulted in historical financial disasters — a sharp decline followed by a failed rally followed by a collapse.

Dow Theory forecasts

Richard Russell’s Dow Theory forecasts call attention to a deterioration in the stock market since April, despite improving business news. Russell offers a narrative that supports the Global Macro Investor prediction, pointing out recent April highs in the Dow and S&P Averages, followed by a plunge in both Averages to May 7 lows, followed by a short rally. If the two Averages turn down again to fall below their May 7 lows, the Dow Theory forecast is that a market collapse is inevitable, based on historic data.

Stock market crash unavoidable?

The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 6.9 percent during the four days that ended May 7, sinking to 10,380.43, the lowest level since Feb. 26. The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the transportation gauge closed at 4,298.12, down 11 percent in four days. Downgrades of Greece, Spain and Portugal helped trigger the decline as the prospect of a sovereign default in Europe undermined investor confidence.

Russell speaks, market listens

Richard Russell’s Dow Theory Letter is taken quite seriously by investors. Chances are his prediction of a stock market crash will encourage a stock market sell-off and a run on cash and gold. Russell claims to have been the first to recommend gold stocks in 1960. Russell says he called the top of the 1949-66 bull market, the bottom of the great 1972-74 bear market and the beginning of the great bull market that started in December 1974. Russell began publishing Dow Theory Letters in 1958. Dow Theory Letters is the longest-running investor newsletter continuously written by one person in the financial industry.

Flickr photo.

Black Swan is the title of a book that examines stuff no one thinks can happen, but does — like last week’s high speed trading meltdown of the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Nassim Taleb, author of “Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable,” describes the rise of the Internet and the September 11, 2001 attacks as examples of Black Swan Events. In Black Swan, Taleb’s argument is that since Black Swan events cannot be predicted, society should at least try to practice policies that may minimize the damage of events, like the Wall Street flash crash, when they do.

Wall Street’s Black Swan

Various media are calling last week’s stock market flash crash a Black Swan event. And in an interesting coincidence, The Wall Street Journal reports that a hedge fund Nassim Taleb advises made a big stock market bet that may be related to the near-catastrophic market selloff, when the Dow dropped nearly 1,000 points in a matter of minutes. In lieu of fast cash loans, Universa Investments LP purchased 50,000 options that would pay off if the stock market dropped off a cliff. According to the Journal, the buy may have contributed to the panicked selling. Investors were already running scared because of the Greek debt crisis, so all it took was one big bet on failure to send them running for the exits. High speed trading made them trample each other on the way out.

Black Swan author Nassim Taleb speaks

Black Swan author Nassim Taleb showed up on CNBC Wednesday to talk about the Wall Street Journal’s Black Swan theory and the flash crash. He dismissed the link between himself and Universa’s Wall Street gamble. “I don’t know anything about Thursday’s event,” he said. “I don’t have enough facts to say whether the collapse was a Black Swan event.” Taleb said things have changed for the worse since he quit everyday trading a year ago. His sentiment:

The world is vastly more fragile than it was when I left it. The crisis of 2008 was caused by debt, hidden risks and irresponsible risk management. We have more debt, more irresponsible risk management and a lower tax base and more hidden risks.”

The Black Swan surprise

Black Swan wasn’t coined by Nassim Taleb. The term has been around since ancient times to describe improbability. Swans are almost always white, but every now and then a black one is hatched for no apparent reason. Taleb uses the term to focus on the markets. In “Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable,” he seems to predict a global financial collapse. Taleb states that the globalization of the financial markets has created that threat. When one financial giant fails, the rest fall like dominoes.

The next Black Swan: predicting the unpredictable?

Taleb says that Black Swan events, given their unpredictability and improbability, cannot be prevented. But he appeared to have the ability to see into the future when he listed “Ten Principles for a Black Swan-proof World” in the Financial Times last year. But it may be too late for markets, governments and the public at large. On CNBC Thursday, he said the government should shoot for a surplus — definitely a Black Swan event. He also said the worst may be yet to come. To paraphrase:

The U.S. is going to have $5 trillion to $6 trillion to borrow in the next 10 years. It’s going to be competing with European governments and corporates. One day, you’re going to have a bad auction. And that day will be the start of something new.

Image from Flickr.

The Microsoft Courier, a dual-screen tablet computer, has officially been canceled by Microsoft. The Courier, first rumored last September, was in development to be a slate or tablet computer with a set of hinged seven-inch screens. While Microsoft doesn’t yet need fast cash loans, one has to wonder if the company is refocusing on its Windows 7 and Windows 7 Phone operating systems. The killing of the Courier is just the latest in the recent shakeup of slate computers, urged on by the success of the Apple iPad.

Microsoft Courier design canceled

The Microsoft Courier was in development to be one of the only Microsoft-native devices available. Microsoft corporation works mostly with software, so the Courier would have been a slight departure for the company. However, this morning Gizmodo reported that employees working on the Microsoft Courier were told that Microsoft will “no longer support the project.” The Corporate Vice President of Communications at Microsoft has said that the Courier project “is an example” of investigating new ideas and “will be evaluated for use in future offerings.”

Microsoft Courier announcement follows HP abandonment

The Microsoft Courier was a device that was rumored to run a custom programmed operating system, based on Windows, built in. Microsoft has also been developing a Windows 7 phone operating system and “light Windows 7″ intended for use in slate computers. However, with the HP purchase of Palm that was announced just one day before, it looks like Windows may quickly be losing a foothold in the slate computing market.

Tablet computing options beyond Courier

Microsoft’s Courier and HP’s Streak were not the only rumored new slate computing devices, however. A device called the JooJoo Tablet, created by Fusion Garage and run on a Linux operating system, has also created headlines about its rise and demise. The JooJoo is definitely not dead – but “aggressive product delivery commitments” and “problematic” user interface issues have pushed the JooJoo about as far out as the Microsoft Courier. HTC, Google, Dell and WePad all have announced that they have built or will build Android-based devices. Lawsuits from both Microsoft and Apple are putting roadblocks in the way of these slate computers. Will any of these iPad competitors be released? Microsoft Courier won’t see the light of day, but there may soon be a tablet and slate computing market with plenty of options for consumers.

An emergency can strike at any time, creating an indisputable need for a fast cash loan. Tornadoes or earthquakes could rip through your house, leaving you homeless within a matter of minutes. You or a loved one could have a medical emergency, which could drain your savings pretty quickly. Regardless of what happens, you will need money to take care of the emergency, as well as take care of your family. Fast cash loans are very appropriate for these situations.

Fast cash loans – easy applications

When you need money now, just click on the green “Apply” button to start your fast cash loan application. You will be taken to a quick application that requires the standard relevant information. This includes your name, address, social security number, date of birth and relevant salary information. They ask for this information to make sure you will qualify for the loan. When you are done filling out your information, just click submit. It’s that easy.

Fast Cash within Hours

Once you have completed your application, it will be forwarded to the appropriate lender in your area. A decision should be reached within minutes. Should you be approved, you will have the money you need for your emergency within a few hours.

Safe and Secure

You have nothing to worry about when filling out the application for your fast cash loan, because of the security certificates most sites use today. These certificates are software programs that help protect your sensitive information from being stolen. As an added way to be sure the site is secure, be sure that the beginning of the URL in your address bar starts with https, rather than just http. The “s” is what means the site is secure.

Fast cash loan payback time

After your emergency is over and you have cash flow again, you must remember to pay back this loan. It is meant only to be a short term cash solution and not a long term loan. Try to make the deadline to pay back your loan. If you cannot meet the deadline, at least be sure to pay back the money as soon as you can right after the deadline. Fast cash loans are great in an emergency, but do not create another emergency by not paying the loan back.

At 7:49 a.m. local time in China, earthquake today killed more than 400 people and injured more than 10,000 people. The Qinghai Earthquake started with a 6.9 shake, and was followed by aftershocks that clocked in at 5.3 and 5.8. The China earthquake today hit a Tibetan area in the south of Qinghai province. After last year’s 7.9 earthquake disaster, the China earthquake today further hinders the debt repair of these poverty-stricken regions in China.

Qinghai China earthquake today

In the Qinghai earthquake, more than 90 percent of the houses and buildings in the local area toppled with the first major Qinghai earthquake. The China earthquake today also toppled a vocational school where students are trapped and buried. China has dispatched rescuers, tents, food and supplies to help the victims of the Qinghai earthquake, but the damaged roads, airports and communications systems are hindering rescue efforts. Many countries are already stepping up with offers of fast cash loans, aid, and relief workers.

Map of China earthquake

The China earthquake today was centered in the township of Jiegu, in the county of Yushu. The area is mountainous and rural, with a population of mostly farmers, sheepherders and tradespeople. The largest nearby city is Qamdo, Tibet.

Strength of China earthquake today

The Qinghai earthquake is being reported as two different magnitudes. The US Geological Service is reporting that the quake measured as 6.9 magnitude on the Richter scale. However, agencies in China map the earthquake as 7.1 magnitude. There have been 18 aftershocks thus far, two of which have been over 5 on the richer scale.

Large earthquakes causing significant damage

Just two years ago, a large China earthquake hit just 800 kilometers away from today’s Qinghai earthquake. That earthquake left over five million homeless and 87,000 people dead or missing. Just in the last three months, Haiti, Chile, Taiwan, Northern Mexico, and Indonesia have seen significant earthquakes. The major activity is mostly reported as being a part of natural earthquake cycles. However, this China earthquake today is re-igniting fears of large earthquakes in other areas of the world.

Get in the cellar, because the health care bill may pass this week!

The United States Senate is quickly approaching a vote on the current rendition of the health care bill, and tensions are reaching the boiling point. According to Talk Radio News Service, Tea Party Patriots staged a “Code Red” rally in Washington, D.C. in which Republican speakers like Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann assured their faithful that that Republicans are winning the debate. However, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs has gone on record as saying that a health care bill will pass the House “in a week.” If Republicans are going to “kill the bill,” they may need a last-second Hail Mary, a la Doug Flutie.

Code Red Republicans may need some Flutie-esque luck

I use the Flutie football analogy here because of something columnist George Will once said about football. He said it encapsulates two of the worst things about America: violence and committee meetings. Tea parties – as well as their counter-”patriot” equivalents – offer ample servings of both, so long as we remember that the dissemination of hate is a form of violence. That makes up for those rallies where physical violence actually fails to occur or people simply forget to bring their assault weapons. Hopefully they know that low interest loans are great for firearm safety courses.

Is there evidence in the numbers of Wall Street as to what direction the wind is blowing? Jim Cramer of “Mad Money” seems to think so. Cramer believes the current health care bill will pass, and that it will cost America dearly. We’re talking deeper recession dearly. “We have to wonder if this is one of those occasions, like in 2008, where the market doesn’t see the coming catastrophe. Or perhaps the market sees any resolution as positive,” he writes for RealMoney.

Jim Cramer sees the floodgates opening

Cap and trade, card check unionization and immigrant amnesty are on the way, claims Cramer. He cites Wal-Mart’s “inability to move even on its dividend boost” as a sign that union pressure may invade even the Walton corporate sanctuary. To pay for it all, where do you think the money will come from? Cramer says higher tax rates, including capital gains and dividend tax rates, by 2011. The massive projected costs of the current health care bill will “put the double-dip recession back on the table,” in Cramer’s estimation.

Meanwhile, Democrats are preparing to deal with Code Red tea parties

Doug Thornell, the National Press Secretary for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), sent an e-mail to “Freshman and Sophomore House Democrats” regarding “Tea Party etiquette.” Their concern is decorum, while Republicans are bracing for impact. Do you know where your fast cash loans are, in case the economic winter deepens?

Image from Flickr.

Prom may or may not carry the best memories for everyone, but it is a tradition for most high school students – getting fast cash loans so they can dress up and have a good night. The ACLU has been offering help to high school senior Constance McMillen, who is now fighting to have her high school reinstate their canceled prom. The school board of Itawamba Agricultural High School announced recently that it would be canceling Prom rather than defend their decision to not allow Constance McMillen to bring her girlfriend to the dance.

Constance McMillen just wanted to go to Prom

Itawamba High School, where Constance McMillen is a senior informed her earlier this year that she would not be allowed to both bring her sophomore girlfriend to the dance and to wear a tuxedo, as she had planned. Constance McMillen then contacted the American Civil Liberties Union of Mississippi, who sent a letter to the district asking that they change their policy. The school then circulated a memo to students, including Constance McMillen, specifically prohibiting same-sex couples at the school dance.

Itawamba high school cancels Prom because of Constance McMillen’s involvement

In the statement recently released, the school board indicated that “Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year.” Later in the statement, as reported by the Clarion-Ledger, they “encouraged the community to organize a private prom.” No organization has yet stepped up and offered to take on the short term loan of students in formal wear for an evening.

Constance McMillen’s reaction to the cancellation

In her interview with USA Today, Constance McMillen reacted to the announcement: “Oh, my God. That’s really messed up because the message they are sending is that if they have to let gay people go to prom that they are not going to have one,” she said. “A bunch of kids at school are really going to hate me for this.” Constance also pointed out that “If they set it up privately they probably aren’t going to allow gay people to go and there is nothing that you can do about it.”

The constitutional concerns of Constance McMillen’s situation

In a prepared statement, Constance McMillen outlined the concerns she has about the school board’s decision. “All I want is the same chance to enjoy my prom night like any other student. But my school would rather hurt all the students than treat everyone fairly. This isn’t just about me and my rights anymore — now I’m fighting for the opportunity of all the students at my school to have our prom.” The ACLU is framing this debate as a constitutional issue of free speech. They argue that as a publicly funded institution, Itawamba Agricultural High School cannot ban Constance McMillen from attending prom based on her choice of date or clothing choices. They also argue that equal protection prohibits publicly funded schools from banning gay students from school activities. The school is defending itself by claiming that Constance McMillen and her girlfriend attending prom would create distractions that would damage education in the school.

How have situations like Constance McMillen’s been decided in the past?

High schools across the nation have a patchwork of policies about gay students and school activities. As USA Today reported, some schools do allow same-sex dates while others continue to ban homosexual couples. There are also some schools, that have bans but do not enforce them. Schools are allowed very wide latitude by most courts in determining the eligibility and limitations on school events, clubs, and activities.

Up-and-comer aims to bring fast cash loans to you

If you’ve ever found yourself in a situation that required quick cash to avert disaster, you know that bureaucratic red tape, lengthy credit and background checks and a long list of application requirements are not what you want. An easy, efficient application that respects your privacy is vital – and it’s no coincidence that First Cash Advance (See www.firstcashadvance.us/y/index.html) provides exactly this for consumers in need of a cash loan.

Get your money in just one hour

It doesn’t matter if you’re caught between paydays or facing a surprise expense that has your budget cornered: First Cash Advance is an excellent source for fast cash loans. They’re relatively new to the online payday loan industry (firstcashadvance.us traffic measurements have only been online since June 2009, according to Compete.com), but their clean, simple Web site is sure to be popular with consumers, particularly since the loan application and distribution process is entirely electronic. This means there’s no paper chase and no waiting for a check in the mail. If a potential customer has a checking or savings account and is approved for a loan, as much as $1,500 is wired directly into the bank account.

It can happen within an hour

So long as you apply before 5 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, it is possible to receive the fast cash loan you need on the same day – even within an hour!

While First Cash Advance is not a lender, they are in position to match applicants with “America’s best online installment and cash lenders nationwide,” according to their Web site. They claim to have helped “thousands of customers” obtain the cash advance services they need. Will you be one of them? Check them out at firstcashadvance.us.

Some traffic analysis from their Web site

Firstcashadvance.us first showed up on Compete.com in June 2009, and they’ve already reached a respectable level of monthly traffic to their site. In January 2010, the site drew 2,402 unique visitors, which is a huge jump from only the month before: 228.14 percent more. Their 2,716 total visitors was a 271.04 percent increase over the previous month.

While the sample size for referring sites is small at this point, we know from Compete.com that cashapply.com refers the most traffic to First Cash Advance (18.72 percent), but other sites like yieldmanager.com and untd.com rank. Their exact percentages are not currently available, however, and most searched terms leading to First Cash Advance aren’t either. Give them time.

First Cash Advance – may your first time with them be the cash advance experience you need

Friday the 13th…AND Black Friday in the same month – run to the hills!

Today is Friday the 13th, and two weeks from now it will be Black Friday -

Oh no! A black cat! From Wikimedia commons.

now for some of us Friday the 13th means zilch, besides a series of increasingly ridiculous slasher flicks. Since it is Friday the 13th, I thought I’d bestow a little knowledge on everybody – and you can put away thoughts of fast cash loans for cloves of garlic, or dream catchers, or anything else to ward off evil spirits.

Friday

Friday is associated with bad luck. Part of the “unlucky” Friday tradition is that Jesus was crucified on a Friday (Good Friday). Also, in Medieval Folklore, witches gather on a Friday for…whatever they do. (Wearing obscene amounts of patchouli, for instance.) Why is that? The very name for the day comes to us from Pagan tradition – the etymology (the origin of words) of Friday is Germanic. Freitag (Fry-tahg) is the day (tag) of Freya/Freyja, a Germanic/Norse goddess of love and fertility. (In the Romance languages, the corresponding name for the day derives from Venus.) So do other days – Thor’s Day = Thursday, Woden/Odin’s Day = Wednesday, etc. As a result of these superstitions across cultures, Friday is a day of bad luck for stock markets, and especially bad luck for a ship to sail on a Friday. However, it’s just a word, and a day – signifying nothing.

The Number 13

The number 13 kind of goes both ways - lucky to some, unlucky to others. A lot of it is to do with 13 coming directly after 12, which is symbolically relevant in and of itself. 12, for instance, the number of Apostles (well…13 if you count St. Paul), the number of months in the Gregorian (solar) calendar, though there are 13 months in the lunar year. 12 is also the number of notes in the Western musical scale. (The Indian scale has 37, the Chinese has 60.) In Christian tradition, there were 13 people at the Last Supper, and the 13th to be seated was Judas, 13 is when a Jewish male has a bar mitzvah, etc. However, what makes 13 an unlucky number has to do entirely with the fact that some cultures consider it unlucky – that cultural tradition spread around the world, and through that cultural tradition, and also the tradition concerning Friday, the superstitions combined over time, most notably in the 19th century, where it starts to get mentioned at all.

Well I ain’t superstitious

If you think Fridays are “evil,” then you’ll see every bad event on a Friday as being caused by it being Friday. If you think the number 13 is evil, you’ll find the number 13 as a cause. Fear of the number 13, and of Friday the 13th are phobias, or triskaidekaphobia and paraskevidekatriaphobia, respectively. (Try saying those 5 times fast.) If you think Friday the 13th is unlucky, you’ll see bad events as being caused by it being Friday the 13th if they occur. It’s called Cum hoc ergo propter hoc (“with this therefore because of this”), a logical fallacy, or Correlation Does Not Imply Causality. Friday the 13th superstitions – though anything that happens on the 13th is purely coincidence – aren’t likely to go away – it’s ingrained in our culture, so it probably isn’t going anywhere.

And they’re off!

It starts the minute you get your paycheck. Some people call it living on a tight budget. Others call it living from paycheck to paycheck. I call it the Payday Race, because that’s exactly what it is. Every pay period, you have one goal: Make it to the finish line before your bills do. You stretch every dollar, but once in a while you need an online cash advance to stay ahead of the pack.

Fast cash loans beat the electric bill

The electric bill needs to be paid soon. But if you don’t go to the grocery store after work tonight, you’ll pay the electric bill in the morning and then you may not have enough money to buy food for the week. You get the groceries and hope against hope that the electricity isn’t cut off before next payday. Luckily, this is a relay race and you have fast cash loans for an anchor. You know that when push comes to shove, you can hand off the baton and let a fast cash loan run the final leg.

Fast cash loans beat the daycare bill

Your kid’s daycare bill is overdue. But if you pay that now, you won’t have enough money to pay the repair guy who’s coming to fix the washing machine tonight. You pay the repair guy, get the laundry done so your kid has something to wear to daycare, and hope against hope that the daycare people don’t say anything about your bill before next payday. It’s going to be a close race, but if you can’t go the distance against the daycare people, you know a fast cash loan will bring home the win.

Fast cash loans keep you in the running

No one likes living this way, but more and more people find themselves in a Payday Race. And more and more people need fast cash loans just to stay in the running. In today’s economy — where prices are up and wages are down — it’s great to be able to fall back on fast cash loans now and then. They’re easy to apply for online and the funds can be deposited to your bank account very quickly. There’s no credit check and no need to fax anything. Fast cash loans are absolutely hassle-free.

Fast cash loans aren’t for long distance relays

A fast cash loan is an invaluable resource when you’re short of cash today and know that you can get by on your next paycheck after paying the loan back. Get a fast cash loan when it makes sense, but don’t depend on a second fast cash loan to pay off your first fast cash loan. Doing that can turn your standard Payday Race into an unbearable endurance event. So borrow wisely, and I’ll see you at the finish line.

The time has come to start baking up Halloween goodies, and I have found some great Halloween cupcakes decorating ideas for you. After all, a Halloween cupcake is not a Halloween cupcake without the proper decor.

Lots of creepy creatures, like bats and worms, make great cupcake toppers. Of course, you can try my favorite, Halloween spider cupcakes. Or why not go with death-themed cupcakes that feature tombstones? There are plenty of great Halloween cupcakes decorating ideas out there.

Halloween cupcakes decorating ideas

The easiest way to turn a regular cupcake into a Halloween cupcake is to get a black tube of frosting and draw a bat, spider, tombstone or any other Halloween character you choose on top of white frosting. You won’t need fast cash loans to complete this idea, as it’s pretty inexpensive.

Another cool idea is to use gummy worms. With these Halloween cupcakes decorating ideas, you can create something delicious and gross at the same time. Now that you’ve got some Halloween cupcakes decorating ideas, what to put them on? Here are some great recipes I collected from a few different recipe sites.

Devil’s Food Cupcakes

What could be more appropriate for Halloween than Devil’s Food Cake? Martha Stewart says this recipe that includes sour cream makes the cupcakes deliciously moist and just slightly tangy. Sounds delicious.

Ingredients

3/4 cup unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder
3/4 cup hot water
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
1 1/4 tsp coarse salt
3 sticks unsalted butter
2 1/4 cups sugar
4 large eggs
1 TB plus 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
1 cup sour cream, room temperature

Directions

Preheat oven to 350. Whisk cocoa and hot water until smooth. In a separate bowl, whisk flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
In a saucepan on medium-low heat, melt butter with sugar and stir. Pour into a mixing bowl. Use an electric mixer to beat until mixture is cooled. It will probably take four or five minutes on medium-low speed. Add eggs, beating each in one at a time. Beat in vanilla and cocoa mixture. Use low speed to add flour mixture gradually, and add the sour cream halfway through.
Pour the batter into paper baking cups in muffin tin. Halfway through baking, rotate tins, bake about 20 minutes and test doneness with toothpick. Let cool completely before decorating. Cupcakes can be stored overnight at room temperature.

Caramel Mudcake Cupcake Recipe

Ingredients
3½ ounces white chocolate, coarsely chopped
4½ ounces	butter, coarsely chopped
2/3 cup brown sugar
¼ cup golden syrup
2/3 cup milk
1 cup plain flour
1/3 cup self-raising flour
1 egg

Directions
Preheat the oven to 330. In a saucepan on low heat, combine chocolate, butter, sugar, syrup and milk. Stir until melted. Let it cool for about 15 minutes while you sift the flours. When mixture is cooled, mix in flours. Lightly beat the egg an stir it in. line muffin tins with paper baking cups ad add batter. Bake 30 minutes.

Coconut Cupcakes

Ingredients

3/4 pound (3 sticks) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 cups sugar
5 extra-large eggs at room temperature
1 1/2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
1 1/2 teaspoons pure almond extract
3 cups flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1 cup buttermilk
7 ounces sweetened, shredded coconut

Directions

Preheat oven to 325. Use the paddle attachment in an electric mixing bowl on high speed to cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. It should take about 5 minutes. Switch mixer to low speed and add the eggs one at a time. Add the vanilla and almond extracts. Mix well.

Sift together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a separate bowl. Gradually add the dry ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk. Fold in the coconut. Bake in cupcake pan with paper liners for 25 to 35 minutes, until tops are brown and a toothpick comes out clean.

App lets you start car remotely

Viper SmartStart app transforms your iPhone into your car keys. Image from Wikimedia.

The Viper SmartStart is a new smartphone application that lets you start, lock, unlock and turn on your car’s alarm system from far away. The app is available on iPhone and iPod touch. Though users can download the app and use it for a year for free, it only works if you have a Viper alarm system in your car, hence the name Viper SmartStart. Using the Viper SmartStart service also costs $30 per year after the first year.

Viper alarm systems cost $500 for a hardwired version or $300 for a modular version. The Viper SmartStart app can also operate as a panic button to set off your car alarm, and it can unlock your hatch or trunk as well as the doors.

Viper SmartStart business plan

I am not sure whether the Viper SmartStart phone app will convince people to get fast cash loans and buy a $500 alarm system so they can remotely start their cars. However, I am certain that people who already own both an iPhone and a Viper car alarm will download the free Viper SmartStart app.

Reports say the Viper SmartStart lets you use all the controls available through the app from basically an unlimited distance. Just remember, if you start your car up when you’re far away from it, make sure the doors are locked. I imagine this little app will really come in handy for people who like to have their cars warmed up in the winter before they get in them in the morning. And, of course, when summer brings the heat back, users can cool their cars off in advance as well.

Comparatively speaking

Most cars nowadays come with remote start and locking capabilities, but the biggest difference between a regular remote start feature and the Viper SmartStart app is the range at which it works. A YouTube ad for the Viper SmartStart says the range is virtually unlimited.

When a child or children are abducted, life for a parent comes to a halt. Intense worry and thoughts of horror invade the senses, leaving you wondering why someone would do such a horrible thing to little ones so young and trusting. Innocence is a child’s right, and no creature has the right to take that from them.

You do everything you can think of to aid authorities in the search. You spin frantically from one thought to the next, only to drop from exhaustion once the centrifugal force of your anxiety reaches its terminus. Then it begins again in your dreams.

Needless to say, this is a horrible place for any child or parent to be. But if the clouds finally do roll away and that child reappears like Jaycee Lee Dugard, what can you do but live in that house of elation that has been baking slowly, hidden away in that corner of your heart? A mother-and-child/father-and-child reunion is pure joy. It is a housewarming.

Jaycee Lee Dugard may have returned

The Sacramento Bee reports that Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped at age 11 from her South Lake Tahoe neighborhood, back in 1991. According to the Bee, a 29-year-old woman claiming to be Jaycee Lee Dugard walked into a California Bay Area police station. Based upon telephone conversations with mother Terry, she and Jaycee’s stepfather Carl Probyn believe it is indeed the young woman who was kidnapped 18 years ago. Terry will fly from her home in Riverside, California to the Bay Area to meet with the young woman today. It is unclear whether fast cash loans helped her purchase the round-trip ticket.

The details of Jaycee Lee Dugard’s initial disappearance are both simple and horrifying. She was walking home from school when a sedan pulled up alongside her. A door opened, Jaycee Lee Dugard was pulled inside, and the car sped off. This all happened just a block away from her home. Stepfather Probyn even heard Jaycee’s screams, he says. But Jaycee Lee Dugard was gone. There were a number of false sightings, but all seemed lost.

News conference today

Jaycee Lee Dugard, not long before her 1991 abduction (Photo: websleuths.com)

The local El Dorado County Sheriff’s Department will hold a press conference to discuss the new details in this previous cold case, according to the Bee.

Jaycee Lee Dugard’s disappearance led to a large-scale manhunt. Notice of her disappearance spread nationwide and prompted one of the largest police investigations in Bay Area history. Web sites like The Charley Project at http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/d/dugard_jaycee.html helped keep the fires alive. Fast cash loans may have even contributed to the continuing campaign to make people aware of Jaycee Lee Dugard’s disappearance.

It will be interesting to hear her tale. However, a family reunited is what is most important in this story.

Another round of Gannett layoffs coming

After several large rounds of layoffs in the past couple of years, Gannett layoffs will continue. The nation’s largest newspaper company will eliminate up to 4,500 jobs sometime in the next few days, reports the Wall Street Journal. However, the number of layoffs has been reported by some news sources as between 1,000 and 2,000.

Reports last month showed that Gannet’s profits were down 60 percent, but the exact numbers involved in Gannett’s growing problems are somewhat unclear.

Conflicting sources

There’s a pretty big discrepancy between the numbers news sources are reporting regarding how many jobs will be eliminated in the Gannett layoffs. The New York Times reports:

On Gannett Blog, a former Gannett editor who closely follows the company, Jim Hopkins, quotes an unnamed person in the company as saying that it will announce on July 8 that it is eliminating 4,500 United States newspaper jobs, and cutting salaries in its broadcast division.

However, Gannett employees shouldn’t run to the payday loan store to take out fast cash loans just yet. The NYT article goes on to say that executives have said the number would be significantly smaller than 4,500. The Associated Press reports:

Between 1,000 and 2,000 people will lose their jobs in Gannett’s latest round of cutbacks, according to a story published Tuesday on The Wall Street Journal’s Web site. The Journal quoted an unnamed person familiar with the McLean, Va.-based company’s thinking.

Previous Gannett layoffs

Large media conglomerate Gannett has been struggling for years — since before the recession hit. The New York Times says:

The company’s United States and British newspaper divisions eliminated more than 10,000 jobs in 2007 and 2008, including about 2,000 layoffs last fall, and Gannett executives have said repeatedly that they expect more downsizing, including layoffs. The company, which also owns a chain of television stations and Internet ventures, ended last year with 41,500 employees, including 35,800 in its newspaper divisions.

Some Gannet-owned newspapers have reported recently rejecting union agreements from Gannett that would significantly cut salaries.

The larger problem

Though Gannett is the largest newspaper company in the United States, and thus has had the largest layoffs and money loss, it certainly isn’t the only newspaper struggling. The Associated Press reports:

Most other major newspaper publishers also are reeling from a devastating one-two punch — the longest U.S. recession since World War II coupled with intensifying Internet competition for readers and advertising. To cope, the troubled publishers have trimmed their payrolls, lowered wages and, in the most extreme cases, filed for bankruptcy protection.

Magazines going down, too

USA Today is Gannett's largest newspaper.

Newspapers aren’t the only printed media with problems, either. Yesterday Vibe Magazine, one of the country’s biggest music magazine, announced it will shut down. Vibe Magazine was one of two U.S. magazines that covered hip-hop and R&B. That leaves The Source as the only nationwide magazine left to cover those musical genres.

Rock-centric magazine Blender shut down last year, though it still maintains a presence on the web. Vibe Magazine has not yet reported whether it ill continue its web site.
