Sometimes, odd things happen. Let’s say you drive your car into a ditch. Happens to everybody. But this time, your glass eye pops out and lands in the cup of hot coffee perched precariously between your legs. The intense heat upon your inner thighs and precious area cause you to jump up like a scalded donkey, straight through the canvas roof.

And wouldn’t you know it, your bike is tied to the top of the car – but now the spokes on the front tire are badly bent. It needs repair before today’s bicycle race and you don’t have cash. Luckily there are instant payday loans and installment loans.

“The previous stretch of six dates like this started with 1/3/1905 — 13 months after the Wright Brothers’ flight,” said Ron Gordon, a teacher who promotes such number-related holidays. He also was a big fan of  Square Root Day on 3/3/09.

The first Odd Day of the 21st century was January 3, 2005 (01-03-05). The second was March 5, 2007 (03-05-07). After today, the three remaining days in this century will be 07-09-11, 09-11-13 and 11-13-15.

Why celebrate Odd Day? There’s MONEY in it for you

Gordon is in fact offering fellow math-minded folks a cash prize of $579 for those who celebrate Odd Day with the most gusto, perhaps even getting the most people involved in an Odd Celebration. Unfortunately, if you live in a country where the date is 07-05-09 like most of the world outside the United States, your odds aren’t consecutive. Write your king, prime minister or junta leader.

According to Gordon, in the event of a tie, the prize money will be shared by the winners, I’m guessing equally. In addition to involving the most people in “the Oddest Parade of Odd Characters,” you can also write the best “Odd Ode” or create an outstanding “Odd Celebration” of your own.

For those of you want more Odd Day levity, Gordon’s daughter is sponsoring a Facebook event, which can be found under “events,” then “Odd Day.” Oddballs and non-oddballs are invited.

Like calendar comets

People get excited about comets. They await their coming, try to catch a glimpse of them in the night sky, then – whooosh! They’re gone. Odd Day is here now, so do something to make it memorable.

But what about Even Day? Seems only fair that they have their own celebration too, doesn’t it? However, think about it. Odd Day encourages you to be odd. Plus they keep those evens separated. Would Even Day require that you “get even?” The satisfaction quotient would likely be fleeting for you, but the lasting ill will imposed on others won’t.

What to do on Odd Day

Do your odds and ends, give a buddy a high five, root for the odds-on-favorite in your favorite baseball or NBA playoff game, watch “The Odd Couple” on TV Land, find that missing odd sock or simply beat the odds. Connie Culp did it. But whatever you do, share it with a friend and spread the odd news. It’s math, it’s fun and it’s odd. Here’s an Odd Ode to take us out on this Odd Day:
