A controversial aspect of the law is the formation of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB). A fight is brewing in Congress over who will lead the CFPB. Liberals want President Obama to nominate Elizabeth Warren. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will have the independent power to write and enforce rules about how loans are offered, from the type of mortgage you can get to the fees you pay on your credit cards. The Wall Street Journal reports that the agency will be able to enforce its rules against any bank with more than $10 billion in assets, as well as all large mortgage lenders, student loan lenders and payday loan companies. It will have an army of examiners in the field. Administration officials thought the concept would be so popular with the public that it would make the entire financial overhaul easier to pass. But Republicans went on the attack, saying it would create an ungovernable bureaucracy and restrict easy access to credit.

Payday loan opponent is front-runner to lead agency

Elizabeth Warren is a front-runner to lead the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. She is a Harvard University law professor who has spoken out publicly against the payday advance industry. She first proposed an office to protect ordinary borrowers and savers in a journal article three years ago. The Washington Post reports that shortly before the financial reform bill was signed into law on July 21, Warren made an early exit from a Congressional hearing about the $700 billion financial bailout that she is helping to oversee because she got called to the White House for a meeting. She later attended the financial reform bill signing ceremony with the President. Then she went out to lunch with Valerie Jarrett, Obama’s trusted adviser.

Warren’s views on credit call confirmation into question

The buzz over Elizabeth Warret’s nomination is turning into a political fight. USA Today reports that Democratic Sen. Christopher Dodd of Connecticut, the Senate Banking Chairman and co-author of the financial reform bill, said there were “serious questions” about whether Warren was confirmable. Warren has been outspoken in her opposition to short term credit options like easy payday loans. Charles Calomiris, finance professor at Columbia University, told USA Today that “What we need really is someone not just with impeccable credentials as a passionate advocate for consumers, but also someone who deeply understands the logic of consumer finance. Elizabeth Warren does not qualify.”

How’s this for a reversal? Life and health insurance firms have invested $1.88 billion in just the top five fast food chains in America. The American Journal of Public Health published a study on April 15 revealing the investment patterns of large insurers. Fast food isn’t the only potentially damaging investment of life and health insurers; in 2009, the New England Journal of Medicine revealed that more than $4.5 billion of health and life insurance money had been invested in tobacco stocks. That is quite the payday loan for companies that seem to have competing interests.

While fast food in and of itself is not necessarily dangerous to one’s health, the fact health insurers, life insurers and other companies concerned with health are investing in potentially dangerous products is disturbing. The researchers in the American Journal of Public Health does point out that “fast food can be consumed responsibly.” However, most evidence points out that fast food, as currently sold and marketed, is a danger to public health. Sun Life, when questioned about their holdings, pointed out that tobacco-related businesses “can be a part of a broader conglomerate involving other aspects such as food production.” Which, given the recent finding about fast food companies, is especially concerning.

Of the nine children born to Joseph and Rose Kennedy, only Jean Kennedy Smith remains among the living.

In nearly 50 years of Senate service, Ted Kennedy championed the causes of health care, civil rights, education, immigration and more. He ran for the presidency in 1980 but lost the Democratic Party nomination to Jimmy Carter. In the 2008 campaign, his endorsement of Senator Obama of Illinois came at a critical time and gave Obama needed momentum.

A pragmatic liberal who would reach across the aisle

Some will remember Senator Ted Kennedy for the tragic auto accident at Chappaquiddick in 1969. However, to define the man by his struggles with alcohol is to run roughshod over his many positive accomplishments as a liberal senator, a legacy of activism that has been an aid to millions. Eloquence in the face of tragedy

The loss of brothers John and Robert Kennedy are stains on America’s history. Despite the crushing sorrow their assassinations brought to the Kennedy’s and the rest of the nation, Ted Kennedy helped us keep our eyes on a future where there would be a healing of harms. In his eulogy of Robert in 1968, he said, “My brother need not be idealized, or enlarged in death beyond what he was in life; to be remembered simply as a good and decent man, who saw wrong and tried to right it, saw suffering and tried to heal it, saw war and tried to stop it.”

Difficult last days didn’t keep him from his life’s work

Senator Kennedy was diagnosed in May 2008 with the cancerous brain tumor that eventually took his life. With or without you

The entry at Money.com on best cities starts off with sharing what Louisville, CO, does not have rather than what it does have:

Some towns nestled along the Rockies are full of pretentious eco-hipsters. Not Louisville.

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons Louisville, CO, nabbed the No. 1 spot on Money.com’s best cities list. With an unemployment rate of 6 percent, it doesn’t have the most highly employed population on the list, but 6 percent is considerably better than the national average. The Money.com best cities article says:

No wonder this down-to-earth town has appeared high on Money’s Best Places list before–and on many others.

It’s also weathering the economic downturn well. Robust industries in the area, such as high tech, energy, and health care, make county unemployment among the lowest in the state.

But the top reason residents give for moving here? The great outdoors. Louisville is laced with nearly 30 miles of trails, Rocky Mountain National Park is less than an hour away, and eight world-class ski resorts are within two hours. The town’s schools are highly rated as well.

Add in dry, clear weather, little crime, good health care, and low taxes, and Louisville is pretty tough to beat.

Second place

After Louisville, CO, on the list of Money.com best cities, is the town of Chanhassen, MN. Many of the reasons for its distinction as the No. 2 spot holder behind Louisville, CO, are financial:

Apparently Chanhassen never got the memo that it’s supposed to be in a recession. Unemployment here was more than three percentage points below the national average in May, thanks to a broad jobs base in the Twin Cities area.

Property taxes have dropped every year in the past five, even as median home prices have crept up. And the town still boasts a per­fect triple-A bond rating.
