Apple didn’t feel it was necessary to respond to such a well-constructed missive. Jobs is more interested in pointing out that Flash is proprietary product, and that he is against closed products that “stifle innovation.” He is more in favor of HTML5 as an open standards platform. That most Apple products are also proprietary didn’t seem to enter into Jobs’ argument, but he was just getting started. He continued by reminding readers that Flash is an old technology that could be replaced with “more modern formats” like H.264 that don’t cause as many crashes.

What’s the real problem here? Steve Jobs explains that Flash tends to get in the way. As he states in his “Thoughts on Flash,”

“We know from painful experience that letting a third-party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.”

How did Adobe feel about being called a balding third wheel? Aside from such eloquent statements as Brimelow’s, all is quiet on the Adobe front. There is a definite sense among the media that Flash is dying as a platform, something that most developers would second – and then some. Lance Ulanoff of PC Magazine called the Steve Jobs Flash bash “an incredible attack on Flash, (one that) could shake its very foundations.”

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico continues to expand, and government officials are now saying the ruptured well may be spewing five times more crude than was originally estimated. As strategies to stop the leak failed, the Coast Guard held a news conference late Wednesday night. Rear Adm. Mary E. Landry told reporters that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration had revised its previous estimate of the leak from 1,000 barrels a day to 5,000. Cleanup crews working on the oil spill are experimenting with burning the oil slick. Weather reports indicate the oil spill could reach the gulf coast of Louisiana by Friday night. As the crisis escalates, Landry said the U.S. military could be called in to assist, which will cost a lot of cash today.

Gulf coast oil spill accelerating

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico has been spreading since April 20 when a drilling rig leased by BP exploded and sank about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, leaving 11 workers missing and presumed dead. It was originally thought the oil was issuing from two leaks in the riser, a 5,000-foot-long pipe leading from the rig to the wellhead on the ocean floor. The New York Times reports that Doug Suttles, chief operating officer for exploration and production for BP, said a new leak had been discovered. A leading edge of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico stretching about 100 miles across had advanced to 16 miles offshore Wednesday, closing in on the Mississippi River Delta.

Gulf coast oil spill estimates

To estimate the output of the leaks in the riser, scientists are eyeballing video feeds from remote submersibles. “That takes a practiced eye.” said Doug Helton in an e-mail message to the New York Times Wednesday night. “Like being able to look at a garden hose and judge how many gallons a minute are being discharged. The surface approach is to measure the area of the slick, the percent cover, and then estimate the thickness based on some rough color codes.”  CNN reports that most of the slick is a thin sheen on the water’s surface. About 3 percent of it is a heavy, puddinglike crude oil.

Oil slick fire

An oil slick fire is being tested to diminish damage to the shoreline from the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. The Associated Press reports that BP and Coast Guard crew late Wednesday afternoon started an oil slick fire test about 30 miles east of the Mississippi delta of the Mississippi River. A 500-foot fireproof boom was used to corral several thousand gallons of the thickest oil on the surface. The collected oil was towed away from the main body of the spill and ignited with hand held flares. The Coast Guard expected the flames to vaporize between 50 percent to 90 percent of the oil in the boom. Prevailing winds were expected to blow the toxic black cloud of smoke and soot out to sea.

Military to assist oil slick cleanup

As the oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico continued to spread, CNN reports that cleanup planners briefed Adm. Michael Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on Thursday morning. The military is working on plans that could include putting a ship in the Gulf to support and resupply cleanup vessels or provide aircraft to help map the spill. A supply base along the coast may also be established for equipment and supplies for the oil spill cleanup, which is likely to be a long-term operation.

Gulf coast oil slick may spread for months

To eventually halt the oil slick in the gulf from spreading, CNN reports the NOAA said a rig will start drilling the first relief well about a half mile from the disaster site on Friday. But the well, intended to stop up the gushing leak with concrete, mud or other heavy liquid, will take several months to complete. A shorter term solution that is expected to take two to four weeks is a dome lowered over the leak at the sea floor which routs leaking oil to a surface collection point. Whether the Dome technique is effective is uncertain. It has never been tried at such depths.

Oil spill cleanup price tag

The oil slick in the Gulf of Mexico is exacting a heavy cost. Oil industry officials say replacing the rig that exploded and sank could cost up to $700 million. BP said containing the oil spill will cost $6 million. The cost of the disaster continues to rise and is expected to exceed $1 billion.

An oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Louisiana has spread to cover more than 1,800 square miles as of Monday afternoon. Gulf of Mexico oil spill update here. The oil spill is coming from a leak in the well that was drilled by the Transocean Deepwater Horizon, a giant offshore drilling rig that exploded and sank last week. The oil spill is reported to be leaking about t 42,000 gallons a day from a well nearly a mile deep. The U.S. Coast Guard has been using robot subs to try to stop the leak.

The oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is expected to remain about 30 miles offshore, based on an analysis of ocean currents and weather patterns. In a statement Monday, the Coast Guard warned states along the Gulf Coast to be on alert. The oil rig that burned and sank was drilling a well about 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, putting that state’s shoreline at the highest risk.

Oil spill response

To prepare for the oil spill, which the Coast Guard said my reach landfall sometime Tuesday, Louisiana has begun spending money now on oil spill response, installing containment booms around environmentally sensitive areas. The Associated Press reports that Alabama has also mobilized oil spill response to prevent damage when the oil slick makes landfall. The Coast Guard said it’s spending extra cash on 15 specially designed skimming vessels, which had collected 48,000 gallons of oil-water mix by Sunday. Aircraft have been dumping dispersant chemicals to break down the oil.

Oil spill disaster fears come true

An oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico was one of the greatest fears When the Deepwater Horizon exploded and sank. The New York Times reports that the well is leaking its liquid cash today from the “riser.” The riser is a 5,000-foot-long pipe extending from the wellhead on the ocean bottom that was connected to the drilling platform. Now detached, the riser is kinked like a garden hose. The leaks are at the sea floor, and officials believe the kinks are preventing an even worse gusher of oil from escaping. Before the platform sank, a geyser of oil and gas shot from the riser to create a giant plume of flame and black smoke.

Oil spill cleanup

To contain the oil spill, the Coast Guard aims to have robotic subs activate a 450-ton valve at the wellhead 5,000 feet deep that could possible seal the well. However, it’s possible that this valve, which was designed to prevent sudden pressure releases that led to the explosion that sunk the platform may not work. As a contingency, BP has dispatched two rigs to the area that could drill relief wells. Officials estimated that this strategy, drilling down to the cavity of oil and gas and pumping it full of  mud and concrete, could take two months.

At this rate, The New York times said, the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, at a rate of 42,000 gallons of oil a day, would have to continue for 262 days to match the 11-million-gallon spill in Alaska’s Prince William Sound from the Exxon Valdez in 1989, the worst oil spill in United States history.
