‘Inglourious Basterds’ gets rave reviews

If you’re trying to figure out what to spend your money on at the box office this weekend, “Inglourious Basterds” reviews indicate that it’s definitely worth the $10 or so for a movie ticket. Starring Brad Pitt and directed by Quentin Tarantino, who has a stalwartly loyal and large band of followers, “Inglourious Basterds” is destined to be a box office smash.

Add in the war element and a gigantic budget, much bigger than any installment loan you could imagine, and this film simply can’t lose. It’ll make nine digits for sure. Here’s what some critics at Rotten Tomatoes had to say in their “Inglourious Basterds” reviews:

Richard Corliss, TIME Magazine

Back in his days as the geek god of clerks at Manhattan Beach Video Archives, Quentin Tarantino must have looked at all those World War II movies, especially the ones about plots to kill Hitler, and realized what was wrong: everybody knows the ending. Bad guys lose. Hitler died in his bunker. Where’s the suspense? Where’s the ambiguity? Most films about the war treat the historical record as sacred, which often serves as an excuse for lofty moral judgments.

Only a few bold souls created alternative versions, like the 1963 film It Happened Here, in which Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo imagined a Nazi-occupied Britain. Tarantino’s rewrite is more brazen still, with a twist that’s pure Hollywood. Hitler will die where? In a movie theater. And who will kill him? Some Jews.

Elizabeth Weitzman, New York Daily News

When a man makes a movie this good, you can forgive him the occasional indulgence.

Aside from the name, in fact, Tarantino’s WWII adventure indicates an undeniable new maturity. A fairy tale about the infinite power of film, it boasts all his swaggering trademarks: rapid-fire dialogue, gleeful violence, endless cultural references. But it’s the sharp-eyed deliberation that makes the greatest impact.

The terrific opening, for example, does feature a hailstorm of bullets. What you’ll remember best, though, is the haunted silence of actor Denis Menochet, playing a French farmer accused of harboring Jews.

Rafer Guzman, Newsday

The Nazis are the victims, the Jews their slaughterers. The score is part spaghetti Western, part French chanson. Brad Pitt looks like Clark Gable but talks like Forrest Gump. And during the final act of Quentin Tarantino’s wildly unpredictable World War II epic, “Inglourious Basterds,” you’ll hear David Bowie’s 1982 theme song to “Cat People.”

Well, why not? Tarantino has made a career out of breaking rules and redefining conventions, turning torture into entertainment in “Reservoir Dogs,” setting new standards for dialogue with “Pulp Fiction” and transforming B-movie schlock into art with “Grindhouse” (codirected with Robert Rodriguez).

Tarantino is the most fearlessly inventive filmmaker alive – but we knew that. And while “Inglourious Basterds” is never anything less than ridiculously entertaining, it’s nothing Tarantino hasn’t done before.

Inspired by Enzo G. Castellari’s similarly titled 1978 cheapie (with the proper spelling of both words), the movie combines several nifty ideas into one almost-story.

John Hartl, the Seattle Times

“Once upon a time,” Quentin Tarantino’s new movie begins. He isn’t kidding.

Any relationship to historical fact is quickly blown away as Tarantino feverishly imagines a plot to burn down a Parisian theater with a literally captive audience including Hitler and other key Nazis. The attempt to rewrite history is as absurd as it is oddly exhilarating.

Indeed, what Tarantino calls a “revenge fantasy” against Hitler offers a kind of mirror image to Tom Cruise’s recent “Valkyrie.” While both movies are “what if” tales, Cruise sticks to the facts about the attempts on Hitler’s life, while Tarantino cares only about staging an attack on the Führer that will prematurely end World War II.

I’m watchless in a tee-shirt and shorts, total value $48

With today’s delivery of the International Herald Tribune came one of those glossy fashion magazines, this one men’s, for a change. The cover features a famous actor; I don’t know which one, maybe Brad Pitt, George Clooney or someone like that, sporting the unshaven look that gets me thrown out of the kitchen in my own home. On the back cover Sean Connery is sprawled on a wooden bench and leaning against a tree, looking very comfortable and at peace with the world. At his feet, a Louis Vuitton sports bag, filled, no doubt with Connery money.

For the rich and famous?

All in all, the magazine is 75 pages of macho articles such as yachts, suits, shirts, travel goods, shoes and sunglasses. Nine of the pages are full-page adverts for wrist-watches and there is an article on Rolex watches. I haven’t worn a watch since I retired, deciding on that momentous day that I don’t need a reminder of how fast time is flying by. But looking at this collection, I am tempted to apply for one of those Online Payday Loans so I can put down a deposit on a beautiful object.

The money in watches

The internet reveals all so I looked up the prices of the watches advertised and I am amazed.

Stainless steel Rolex: $5,720

Chanel ‘J12 calibre’ 3125: $18,000

Patek Philippe 5396R: $33,760

Lacoste: About $350

Corum: $4,500

Gc: About $500

F. P. Journet: $32,900

Ferrari: About $5,000

Breitling: $6,425

Am I missing something?

I guess I could be pressured into spending the money to buy a watch for $350, but that would be my absolute outer limit. Not a cent more! $30,000 plus – no way. I would rather upgrade my car or do that kitchen alteration we’ve been talking about for years. It’s not as though an expensive watch is going to give me more time, is it? All it will do is give me the same time.

What about the recession?

The fancy watch manufacturers haven’t heard about the global recession either or perhaps the people who wear these watches don’t get caught up in recessions. But that’s not what the Forbes List reported. They reported some major changes in wealth distribution.

Elsewhere in the Magazine

Is it really worth $40,000?

The Louis Vuitton sports bag at Sean Connery’s feet is priced at $898. An Ermenegildo Zegna suit will set you back $1,795, a pair of Tod’s Loafers runs at $560 and once you add a shirt, socks, underwear and a Patek Philippe watch you will be a walking investment of about $40,000. What does the magazine advertise when there is no global recession?

Egon Schiele

The most interesting piece in the magazine was a series of 5 paintings of Egon Schiele wearing the latest in fashion clothing and sitting in various contorted poses. Egon Schiele (1890 – 1918) was an Austrian painter and a protégé of Gustav Klimt. Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century.

Schiele’s work is noted for its intensity, and the many self-portraits the artist produced. The twisted body shapes and the expressive line that characterize Schiele’s paintings and drawings mark the artist as an early exponent of Expressionism, although still strongly associated with the art nouveau movement.

How clever to re-dress Schiele in modern clothing and put him back in the same poses as he painted himself a hundred years ago. One thing is for sure, Schiele never bought clothes like those!

How many of you will object to that? Be honest.

Jennifer is definitely putting herself out there in a big way lately. Whether she’s searching to jump start her film and TV career again or simply looking to show Brad Pitt what he’s been missing (and rub Angelina Jolie’s nose in it), Aniston has captured our attention once more.

Have you SEEN the January issue of GQ? Jennifer will NOT be ignored!

Either the studio was nice and warm or that tie of hers has a self-powered space heater made of space-age polymers. I wonder how many payday loans it would take to pay for such advanced neckwear? Whatever the case, it’s clothing optional.

Jennifer Aniston appears determined to make sure that nobody forgets that she is one of the most beautiful women on the planet. I completely agree, despite the fact that the concept (and most of the stars) in “Friends” caused my eyes to sting and my skin to break out in hives.

They weren’t my “Friends”

Why did I hate that ubiquitous, corny, humor-dump of a show? It was a combination of the theme song, Matthew Perry, Courteney Cox and Matt LeBlanc. Especially Matt LeBlanc. I did enjoy the relationship between Ross (David Schwimmer) and Rachel (Aniston), as well as Phoebe’s strange songs (Lisa Kudrow was the hippie Rose Nylund; I wonder if Betty White ever knew?) OK, I guess “Friends” was OK, hives and all.

Is Jennifer Aniston a Greek goddess?

The stunning woman could not be reached for comment, but I have it on good authority that Aphrodite and Hera are very critical of all the media attention Aniston has been receiving.

Obviously, Jennifer Aniston will never be completely free of being Rachel, but there are many other examples of her star power away from “Friends.” Here are five memorable moments in Jennifer Aniston:

1. “The Good Girl“, where she proved she could act.
2. She told Vanity Fair in 2005 regarding her divorce from Brad Pitt and accusations that she chose career over children, “A man divorcing would never be accused of choosing career over children….That really pissed me off. I’ve never in my life said I didn’t want to have children.”
3. She gives Angelina a piece of her mind, per Vogue. While Aniston was still married to Brad Pitt, Angelina thought it would be good form to gush over him. “That stuff about how she couldn’t wait to get to work every day [while filming "Mr. & Mrs. Smith"]? That was really uncool,” replied Aniston.
4. Of course, “Office Space” – Because you know Jennifer Aniston’s got REAL flair.
5. She dates rock-n-rollers: Adam Duritz, John Mayer, etc.

Jennifer Aniston is hot. Maybe she doesn’t need clothes

But if you find yourself in a tight situation this holiday season, think about it. If you have your essentials covered but need to buy a new shirt for work and payday is a week away, consider payday loans to help you get by. You’ll be thankful you did.

Payday loans can’t help you look as good as Jennifer Aniston in her new calendar, but they can help you get extra cash and afford basic clothing—something Aniston forgot about in her racy calendar pictures. Jennifer Aniston’s role as Rachel Green (on the hit comedy sitcom Friends) captured our hearts, and she’s been a media sensation ever since. The Paparazzi thrives on Aniston’s every move. If Aniston does anything remotely exciting, the public is sure to get all the juicy news stories and pictures. Her latest move is definitely exciting, to say the least, and there are definitely pictures to prove it.

Jennifer Aniston vs. Brangelina

Jennifer Aniston

Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, two of the world’s most beautiful people, divorced in 2005 after four years of what seemed like a perfect marriage. Apparently, Jennifer and Brad’s marriage was not as perfect as we were led to believe. Not long after the divorce, there was speculation that Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie had become an intimate couple. The rumors of Brad and Angelina’s relationship were confirmed, and Brangelina became a part of our everyday lives. Since then, the news media has portrayed the lives of Aniston, Pitt, and Jolie as an ongoing battle: Jennifer Aniston versus Brangelina, each trying to outdo the other.

Brangelina Outdone

Brangelina

Brad and Angie have been globetrotting, making babies, and then adopting even more babies. The Brangelina clan is up to six now: three adopted children and three biological children. There are rumors that Angelina Jolie is pregnant again, but for now, those are just rumors. With a gorgeous family, genuine philanthropist efforts across the globe, and films actually worth watching—like “Benjamin Button”—Brangelina seems like it can’t be beat. However, Jennifer Aniston just came out with her 2009 Calendar, chock full of sexy pictures. One photo in particular takes the cake: Jennifer Aniston soaking wet under a waterfall in a barely-there, flesh-toned t-shirt. She may as well be topless. Consider Brangelina outdone.

Jennifer Aniston’s Popularity

Everything Jennifer Aniston does makes her, or someone else, a lot of money. The recent pregnancy rumors, pictures of her everyday life, her relationship with John Mayer, and now the 2009 calendar—every move she makes increases her popularity and her wealth. Aniston even has a new film coming out this Christmas: “Marley and Me“. With her new movie and her sexy calendar, Aniston is sure to be rolling in the dough.

Wet T-shirt Contests

Jennifer Aniston is popular enough and beautiful enough that throwing on a wet t-shirt and taking a picture of it can increase her net worth while still remaining classy. But let’s face it; any normal person throwing on a wet t-shirt to make a little extra cash is downright trashy. Times are tough, money is tight, and people can get pretty desperate for much needed extra money. The good news is you don’t have to don a wet t-shirt to get extra cash when you need it most. Payday loans can help you through short-term financial problems while maintaining your dignity. Jennifer Aniston looks gorgeous in her wet t-shirt, but payday loans will make it so you don’t have to stoop to that level when you need a little financial help.

Brad Pitt is on the move, trying to raise awareness of the lasting repercussions of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, and you should be aware that payday loans can be an aid when a natural disaster hits. Hurricane Katrina devastated Louisiana over three years ago, but life in New Orleans still has not returned to normalcy. Lower Ninth Ward, the New Orleans neighborhood hit hardest by Hurricane Katrina remains in shambles; much of the Lower Ninth Ward is still uninhabited and unlivable. Brad Pitt and many others are fighting to rebuild New Orleans into the city it once was, with or without payday loans.

Pitt Appears on Ellen DeGeneres Show and Larry King Live

With an ever-increasing bombardment of advertising and marketing stimuli, Americans are difficult to connect with, especially when it comes to community outreach and charity. America’s indifference is why having a celebrity spokesperson, and one that truly backs up the cause, is so essential to getting Americans to take action. A spokesperson like Brad Pitt can grab a lot of attention. Brad Pitt appeared on the Ellen DeGeneres Show today via satellite from the Lower Ninth Ward in New Orleans. Brad Pitt will also be featured on Larry King Live tonight. So what’s all the fuss about? Why all the TV appearances? Brad Pitt is championing an effort to build affordable homes in New Orleans. Brad Pitt is telling Ellen DeGeneres, Larry King, and America the significance of the Make It Right Project.

Make It Right Project

Make it Right Project

The Make It Right Project is a plan to build 150 new homes in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward. Brad Pitt expects families will be in these new homes by the end of summer 2009. However, Brad Pitt cannot complete this project on his own, and contrary to popular belief, the houses constructed with the help of Make It Right are not free. Pitt described Make It Right as an adopt-a-house campaign. These houses cost money, and that’s why Pitt is asking for help from all Americans. Pitt has already donated $5 million of his own money, but he is also asking for donations from anyone who can afford to help, including foundations, well-off individuals, churches, and corporations. One eco-friendly house costs just $150,000 because Make It Right is committed to building homes that are affordable, sustainable, and true to the culture of New Orleans. As of today, 86 of the 150 homes have been sponsored.

A Little Help from Your Friends

Three years ago, Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans. Three years. The people of New Orleans’ desperately need our help because three years is far too long to wait for a new home. You wouldn’t wait three years for help, so why should the residents of the Lower 9th Ward? It’s simply unacceptable. A need is a need, and most needs are immediate. What would happen if you faced an emergency or natural disaster and you needed money to cover costs right away? Three years wouldn’t cut it, and neither would one day. An emergency requires fast action, so if you find ever find yourself in need of quick cash, more often than not, you can have payday loans direct deposited into your account by the end of the day.
