Whether you have a bun in the oven, or are just curious, there is actually a list compiled every year for the most popular baby names. The most popular baby names list for 2009 came out recently, and it is an interesting tidbit, in case you want to escape the doom and gloom of the news lately. Tylenol will kill you and bombings and so forth do get a bit dreary, so why not lighten up the mood? The list is pretty official, so it isn’t like you’ll need to get short term loans to commission a study or anything.

Most Popular Baby Names 2009

The list of most popular baby names is actually compiled by the Social Security Administration. They have just released the Most Popular Baby Names 2009 list, and it has some interesting entrants, at least one of which is really annoying. Isabella, no doubt inspired by Twilight (cue sound of vomiting), has knocked Emma out of the top slot. To be fair, Isabella was actually the Number 2 pick in 2007 and 2008 and has been in the top 10 since 2004.

Without Further Ado

Ok, so here are the Top 10 Boys names and Top 10 Girls names for 2009, in order:

Boys:

Jacob

Ethan

Michael

Alexander

William

Joshua

Daniel

Jayden

Noah

Anthony

Girls

Isabella

Emma

Olivia

Sophia

Ava

Emily

Madison

Abigail

Chloe

Mia

The SSA would know

After all, the Social Security Administration would be in a position to know such things. The cool thing is that you can actually search the Most Popular Baby Names by year, and find out which names were the most popular going all the way back to 1880. (That actually predates the Social Security Administration by about a good 50 years or so.) For instance, the most popular boys and girls name in 1927 were Robert and Mary. For 1968, they were Michael and Lisa. Kind of cool, huh?
