Pringles recalled for salmonella danger
Pringles fans beware – two of the more popular flavors of your favorite baked chip have been added to the HVP Salmonella recall. The Pringles recall includes two flavors – “Cravers Cheeseburger” and “Taco Night”. The flavors are being pulled from shelves – and if you have any sitting in your cupboard, you should just throw them away.
Pringles Recall part of a larger issue
This recall of Pringles flavors is a part of the larger, FDA-initiated recall of products that use Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein from a Las Vegas factory. This recall has been growing, and the company may end up requiring same day loans to survive the recall. According to the FDA, no illnesses have been reported from this salmonella outbreak. HVP is most often used as a flavor enhancer and texture improver, especially in vegetarian foods.
Avoid the Pringles recall by making your own chips
What makes Pringles so attractive is their crispy baked-not-fried flavor. This makes surviving the Pringles recall even easier, if you have access to an oven. You won’t even need online payday loans to pay for the ingredients. You can even mix and match your own flavor combinations. Who knows, with homemade chips, no Pringles recall (or recall of any other potato chip) will ever affect you again.
Recipe for recall-free baked potato chips
- 1 pound potatoes – Yukon gold or russet
- Spray oil – canola, soy, or corn
- Salt and seasonings to taste
Preheat your oven (or toaster oven) to 375 degrees. Scrub the potatoes with cold water. Then use a mandoline, food processor with a slicer attachment, salad shooter, or sharp knife to slice the potatoes as thinly as you can. Cover a baking sheet with tinfoil, then spray the tinfoil with oil. Arrange the potato slices in a single layer on the sheet. Spray the top of the potato slices lightly with the oil. Bake in the pre-heated oven for 30-40 minutes, rotating the pan once through baking. When the chips are browned, remove them from the oven and sprinkle with salt.
Flavoring your homemade Pringles
Of course, one of the reasons this Pringles recall is so scary is that Pringles offer all kinds of flavored chips. Not to worry, though, you can flavor your homemade chips too. Try using flavored oils to spray your chips before they cook – a spicy jalapeno or garlic flavored oil is great. Or, blend your favorite spices in a small bowl while the chips are baking and sprinkle them when they come out of the oven. A tablespoon each of chili powder, paprika, and cumin create an amazing taco flavor. A packet of ranch dressing flavor re-creates ranch Pringles. Blend two tablespoons buttermilk powder with one tablespoon onion powder to re-create sour cream and onion. Experiment with your spice cabinet – you’ll soon discover that the Pringles recall will no longer be of concern for you.
