President Obama's Memorial Day plans to visit the gulf oil spill and spend the holiday in Chicago have provoked right wing news pundits once again. Flickr photo.

President Obama’s Memorial Day itinerary elicited a predictable reaction from his Republican enemies. The Obamas plan to spend the long Memorial Day weekend in Chicago. The president will interrupt the trip with a visit to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Obama is giving Vice President Joe Biden the honor of laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday. Right wing news pundits and politicians attacked Obama’s decision to leave Washington for the weekend, saying he “hates the military.”

Obama to visit oil spill cleanup

Obama will take a break from the Memorial Day weekend holiday trip to Chicago to make the trip to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs confirmed Tuesday. USA Today reports this this will be Obama’s second visit to the oil spill cleanup since the BP oil leak disaster began. The massive oil spill cleanup effort has been under way for 36 days and the leak has spilled up to an estimated 88 million gallons and counting. Fishermen rely on personal loans with no credit check to survive as  as the gushing oil wreaks havoc on the gulf coast fishing industry and the marine the environment.

Right wing news extremists vent

Obama’s Memorial Day plans generated an overheated reaction from right wing news outlets dedicated to promoting a conservative agenda. Tuesday morning on the cable TV talk show “Fox & Friends,” pundits criticized Obama’s Memorial day plans accompanied by graphics at the bottom of the screen reading “Trampling On Tradition?” “Offensive To Soldiers?” and “Memorial Day Miss-Out?”

Obama follows in steps of Reagan, Bush and W

An objective look into Obama’s Memorial Day plans shows that Obama is not the first U.S. president not to appear at Arlington National Cemetery on the Memorial Day holiday. Media Matters reports that in 1983 President Reagan attended a summit meeting in Williamsburg, Va., on Memorial Day while Deputy Secretary of Defense W. Paul Thayer laid a wreath at Arlington Cemetery. In 1992, George H.W. Bush attended a ceremony in Kennebunkport, Maine, (where he also reportedly played a round of golf) while VP Dan Quayle laid the wreath at Arlington. In 2002, President George W. Bush commemorated Memorial Day at Normandy in France.

Right wing news exposed

During the “Fox & Friends” segment on Obama’s Memorial Day plans, pundit Andrew McCarthy said the president’s itinerary was evidence that Obama is “uncomfortable” with the military and sees the armed forces as a necessary evil. McCarthy also said Obama “doesn’t want to be associated with the traditions” of the military.” Media Matters pointed out that Obama gave the commencement speech at West Point the weekend before, and he will be at a military cemetery on Memorial Day, just not Arlington.

Obama’s Memorial Day politics

Obama’s Memorial Day visit to the site of the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is a political appearance intended to counter accusations from right wing conservatives that the BP oil leak is “Obama’s Katrina.” But lately even moderate voices have begun to criticize the president’s command of the oil spill situation. Democratic strategist James Carville, a reliable Obama supporter, told CNN’s Anderson Cooper last week that the administration’s response to the spill has been “lackadaisical” and that Obama was “naive” to trust BP to manage the massive cleanup effort.

I am not surprised, however. Any President not willing to lay the wreath on the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier, is not fit to serve as the U.S. President and I feel this should be a reason for Impeachment. It is a slap in the face of the American Soldiers that have served, are serving, and will serve in the future. As a U.S. Army veteran, I am outragged with this Marxist President.

  2. kdawg says:

Not surprised, since Barry-O is not a US citizen (ask me if I have proof and I'll ask you to prove he is)! Barry-O woiuld rather mix amongst the Acorn/Seiu Chicago gang, mix afould at a San Fran fundraiser, and play a rouind of golf than face up to American tradition – all this while whiffing at his third at-bat with his 40 day weak response to the oil disaster, of which he has shown neither leadership nor competence. B.O. has got to go!!!

  3. Missy says:

Reagan was attending a meeting and George W. commemorated the holiday at a well known battle ground of WWII, neither men should feel ashamed. H.W. should, without a doubt, feel ashamed. If he actually played that round of golf in Maine on Memorial Day instead of laying a wreath at Arlington National Cemetery, then he was a disgraceful president, just as Barack Obama is. It's disgusting that the Commander in Chief would skip out on military tradition. If he were attending a ceremony at a military cemetery in a location that wasn't so near where he is taking vacation, it might not be as despicable. However, since it's so close to his vacation destination, it is horrible. How "considerate" of him to take a break from his family time to "spit" on the graves of American soldiers. What a worthless president!!

  4. Darlene Morris says:

Not surprised…Obama's the first non-American President!

    • Steven Tarlow says:

And what's the proof of that, Darlene? It's speculation, not a verified statement.

      • kdawg says:

The only proof needed is the fact that No-Bama has failed to prove it himself. Barry-O has got to go!

  5. R. Justice says:

He should be ashamed of himself for putting off tradition of honoring the military so he and his woman can go to Chicago. Why not wait till after Memorial Day? Leave it to someone like him to do this. This is unbelieveable. A slap in the face of all the families of those gave it their all and to all the members of the military and veterans. He should be boycotted.

To all the soldiers, this how the man who sent you into harms way feels about you. He could care less. He is too busy going on vacation to think about you.

    • Tom says:

Do you think that Reagan, HW, and W should also have been ashamed of themselves for putting off tradition as well?

      • kdawg says:

They should not be ashamed at all, since they were attending matters of State, and Barry-O is simply chillin' with his Chicago homeys. Barry-O has got to go!
