New jobs during a recession are always good news, and the Goodlettsville, Tenn., company Dollar General Corp. has plans to expand. According to a company press release, Dollar General plans to open 625 new convenience stores across the company’s 35-state operating area, plus three new states: Connecticut, Nevada and New Hampshire. It is estimated that the Dollar General expansion will create 6,000 jobs.

Dollar General’s exciting opportunity

Projects for fiscal year 2011 are obviously going well for Dollar General stores, as company chairman and CEO Rick Dreiling is excited to continue a growth cycle that will have created 15,000 new jobs on U.S. soil by the end of 2011. Not only will the potential for new jobs help the company expand, it may improve the financial situation of the underemployed who depend on payday loans or installment loans from time to time.

“Bringing our store model of convenience and value to more people in more states is an exciting opportunity for us,” said Dreiling in the press release. “We believe the new communities and states we are entering will benefit from the new jobs, shopping choices and dedication to community found at Dollar General.”

Not only will 625 new Dollar General stores open in 2011, the company has plans to either remodel or relocate 550 additional Dollar General stores.

Dollar General Corp. background

The Dollar General convenience store chain has been in operation for more than 70 years. During that time, the company’s slogan has been “Save time. Save money. Every Day!”; delivering good deals on frequently used products like food, health and beauty products, cleaning supplies, basic clothing and housewares and seasonal goods has been Dollar General’s stock in trade. Dollar General’s private brands are priced low every day, as are national brands like Procter & Gamble, Kimberly-Clark, Unilever, Kellogg’s General Mills, Nabisco, Hanes, Pepsi Co. and Coca-Cola.

With more than 9,200 stores across 35 states, Dollar General has more storefronts than any retailer in the U.S. Find a store near you with the Dollar General store locator.
