Calling all residents of the southern United States! Whataburger is giving out free burgers today between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. to anyone who wears orange to Whataburger store.

If you live in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida or Georgia, you should be able to find a Whataburger somewhere nearby. Whataburger has almost 700 locations across those states.

Whataburger store locator

If you live in one of the 10 states lucky enough to have Whataburger giving out free burgers, but you don’t know where the nearest one is, use the store locator. Right on the Whataburger homepage, all you need to do is punch in your zip code.

Check out the menu bar on the left-hand side, and you can’t miss it. You wouln’t want to miss a chance at instant money in the form of a free burger. You don’t need a coupon to redeem your free Whataburger, you just have to wear enough orange to satisfy the Whataburger employees. According to some web sites, this means getting “decked out from head to toe” in orange. I’m sure are some lenient Whataburger servers out there, but when it comes to free food, you’re better safe than sorry.

Whataburger history

The first Whataburger store opened in Corpus Christie, Texas, in 1950. In fact, August 2010 marks Whataburger’s 60th anniversary. Whataburger is calling this promotion “Orange Night Out,” and I honestly can’t find a reason for why Whataburger chose this date to hold this promotion.

Perhaps it’s to celebrate Vetrans Day Eve? In case you’re not familiar with Whataburger, and don’t know why the restaurant and the chain’s primary offering are so named, Whataburgers are famous for being big, so make sure you bring your appetite. If you’re the adventurous type, you can skip the store locator business and drive around looking for its signature A-fram building and orange logo.

People celebrate holidays for many reasons. Religion, tradition, family, patriotism and sometime just for fun. Everyone has their favorite small, unexplainable holiday. Mine is National Punctuation Day. However, I think many of you might adopt today as your new favorite holiday, if you haven’t already.

It’s National Chocolate Day, a perfect excuse to cheat on your diet or have dessert with breakfast or give gifts of chocolate to loved ones. Better yet, today would be a good day to discover opportunities to get free chocolate, and guess what! I have the answer.

Godiva Chocolate Rewards

You don’t have to take out a cash advance to enjoy Godiva Chocolate Rewards. In fact, all you have to do is sign up, and you get a free piece of chocolate every month. You can join the club any time, but what better time than National Chocolate Day?

Members of Godiva Chocolate Rewards also get a gift any time they spend $10 in one month. So, if you’re a chocolate lover, your chocolate buying habits will be rewarded with more chocolate! Joining Godiva Chocolate Rewards also gets you free shipping on an order and access to exclusive online specials.

Asher’s Chocolates

If you’re the type who doesn’t mind filling out online surveys and loves the thrill of winning, check out Asher’s Chocolates. Asher’s gives out free chocolate each month to one random person who participates in a survey. So if you’re delighted by the idea of National Chocolate Day, you might be a good candidate for the position of chocolate winner.

For more opportunities to get free chocolate, check All Free Samples regularly. Right now the site is offering free samples of Nestle’s (at http://www.nestle-abuelita.com/EN/Granulado/) latest hot chocolate concoction.

Molten Chocolate Cake recipe

You knew I wouldn’t leave you on National Chocolate Day without a delicious recipe for chocolaty goodness. I don’t know about you, but I think molten chocolate cake is one of the best inventions for fully enjoying chocolate. Here’s a recipe from Joy of Baking.

half a cup of unsalted butter, cut in pieces

6 oz. semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate, cut into small pieces

3 large eggs, separate yolks and whites

one-third cup of granulated sugar, plus 2 TB sugar, separate

1 tsp. pure vanilla extract

one-eighth tsp. cream of tartar

Instructions

Preheat oven to 400 degrees and place rack in center of oven. Butter four three-quarter cup molds, ramekins, or custard cups. (I recommend using large muffin tins.) Use some 1 TB sugar to dust the insides of the molds. Place prepared molds on a baking sheet and set aside.

Use a stainless steel bowl suspended over a saucepan of simmering water to melt the butter and chocolate. Remove from heat; set aside.

With an electric mixer, beat the egg yolks and the sugar until thick, pale, and fluffy. (When you slowly raise the beaters the batter will fall back into the bowl in slow ribbons.) Beat in the vanilla extract. Fold in the melted chocolate mixture.

In a separate bowl, whip the egg whites until frothy. Add cream of tartar and whip until soft peaks form. Gradually add the other TB of granulated white sugar and whip until stiff peaks form. With a rubber spatula or wire whisk, gently fold the beaten whites into the chocolate mixture. Don’t mix too much, or the batter will deflate. Divide the batter between the molds, filling about three-fourths of the way. Bake 10 to 15 minutes.

When outside edges of cakes look set but centers still look wet, remove from oven and let them rest for a couple of minutes. Run a sharp knife around the edge of each cake and invert each onto the center of a serving plate. For topping, you can sprinkle powdered sugar or add a dollop of whipped cream or creme fraiche.

Note: If you prepare the chocolate mixture several hours ahead of time, pour it into the prepared molds, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate. Bake just before serving. When the batter is cold, it may take a couple of extra minutes to bake.

Despite the mayhem that occurred in some areas the last time KFC gave out free chicken, the fast-food vendor is going for it again. If you sign up for the Colonel’s E-mail Club, you can print a coupon for a free piece of KFC grilled chicken.

Previously, KFC gave out full grilled chicken meals for free. In that case customers also needed a coupon that could be printed from the web site. Also, Oprah promoted the giveaway on her show and her site, adding a whole new level of hype to the phrase “KFC free chicken.”

Boston Market meals for $1

It’s a good day for chicken lovers, as Boston Market is running a special on chicken meals through Nov. 1. Customers who print out the online coupon can get a Boston Market meal for only $1. So if you were thinking of getting payday cash advance loans to pay for groceries this week, you might want to hold off.

Boston Market meals are pretty hearty. The $1 meals include a quarter of a chicken, cornbread and mashed potatoes. That is a whole lot of food for $1. Boston Market probably figured out that in order to compete with the ever-more-popular Dollar Menus popping up at every fast food place, they’d have to run this promotion to get people hooked. The strategy seems to be working, as the page that allegedly contains the Boston Market coupon (www.bostonmarket.com/restaurant?page=coupons) won’t even load right now, probably because of too much web traffic.

More free stuff

Taco Bell also is participating in a giveaway this week. Taco Bell says it will give a free Black Jack Taco to customers after dark on Halloween, which is Saturday. The only difference between a Black Jack Taco and a regular taco from Taco Bell appears to be the “zesty pepperjack sauce.”

Of course, the color of the shell is different, too, but that’s not really an ingredient. Black Jack Tacos are normally 89 cents, but you can try one for free on Halloween. In case I don’t make it to Taco Bell on Saturday, let me know if the Black Jack Taco lives up to all the hype. As far as I can tell, you don’t need a coupon to get a free taco.

She's about to get some free chicken!

Personal Money store’s main purpose is to get you cash money automatically wired to your bank account in just a couple of hours. But we do more than that.

Don’t need a payday loan? Check out popular news topics on our Money Blog. Did you know we write articles based on what people are searching for on the Internet? That means if you read our blog you’ll be informed on what everyone is talking about. Pop culture news, business news, food news and recipes, crime stories and entertainment news — Personal Money Store has it all.

Do you like free stuff?

Whenever we find out that a business is giving away free stuff, Personal Money Store considers it our responsibility for letting people know about it. For instance, did you know that one day each year, Chick-fil-A will give a free meal to anyone dressed as a cow? Did you know there is a free smartphone app that will help you avoid cops? Usually at least once a week some business or another is handing out free stuff.

Ben & Jerry’s has free ice cream day every year. Disneyland is giving free admission to 1 million people who do volunteer work next year. Personal Money Store is here to help you save money any way we can, whether it’s getting you the cheapest payday loan, informing you about stores that are having sales, cluing you in to discount furniture outlets or sharing general money-saving tips.

News and entertainment

Besides sharing financial news and helping people make good financial decisions, Personal Money Store’s Money Blog keeps you informed about the most talked about current events. Along with helping you manage the money that ends up in your paycheck, we’ll tell you what the government is dong with their cut. Find out what’s going on with health care reform, the economy, technology development, taxes and criminal investigations into politicians.

We’ll also keep you up on what the entertainment and, thus, the advertising industries are spending their money on. Did you know that nearly 10 million people tuned in to the “Jon & Kate Plus 8″ season premiere on TLC? That is some prime advertising real estate. Did you know that more people search for “Project Runway” on Google than any other show? Lifetime better take advantage of having one of the most popular shows in the country.

Personal Money Store services

You can keep up with the news on our Money Blog, but most importantly, Personal Money Store will be here to help when you get in a financial bind. We can help you keep your credit record clean and avoid expensive bank overdraft fees by hooking you up with lenders who can quickly give you short-term installment loans, payday loans, cash advances or armed forces loans.

We can also help you find debt relief, credit counseling and mortgage loan modification. We’ve got connections with CarDealExpert.com, which can get you hooked up with an online auto loan. Whatever your money needs are, we’ve got your back. So whether you’re looking for nothing in particular or a little bit of everything, you’re in the right place.

Yep, it’s that time of year again. From now until Nov. 2, whenever you buy McDonald’s food, your order will come with McDonald’s Monopoly game pieces attached. This year the fast food giant has added an extra twist: There is a possibility someone will win $1 million every day.

It all depends on the roll of the dice. Every day, a player in McDonald’s Monopoly 2009 will have a chance to win either $10,000 or $1 million. If the player selected to roll the dice rolls double sixes, the prize is $1 million. Of course, there will be no actual, physical rolling of the dice. This all happens online at playatmcd.com.

Slim pickings

Now, don’t go blowing your cash till payday on McDonald’s food in order to get your chance at winning $1 million. Millions, possibly billions, of game pieces will be issued, and only 29 players will get a chance at $1 million. In order to become a registered player, you must go enter the code on your game piece on the web site.

Of course, the more McDonald’s stuff you buy, the more chances you will have to win, but make sure you are doing what’s right for your health and your budget. Even for the $10,000, there’s a very small chance at winning.

Promotional partnership

The dice roll and grand-prize-of-the-day winning will be a nightly event on “The Jay Leno Show.” On weeknights, you can find out who the winner is from Jay Leno thanks to a cross-promotional deal between McDonald’s and NBC. You can also get updates on the winner from Twitter if you follow the McDonald’s Monopoly game 2009 Twitter feed, @McDonald’s. And, of course, you can discover whether you are the winner on the web site.

When you enter your game piece code on the web site, you will also find out whether you have won a different prize. Prizes in the McDonald’s Monopoly game 2009 include $50 or $500 Shell gift cards, Xbox 360 systems, free Boingo Wi-Fi at more than 11,000 McDonald’s locations in the U.S. and My Coke Rewards Points.

<img class="size-thumbnail wp-image-51437" title="Trapster Helps Avoid Expensive Tickets" src="http://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/2980138654_54570c7b6c1-200x133.jpg" alt="Trapster puts the power to avoid police in your hands.
The best way to avoid getting a speeding ticket is to not speed. However, for those who just don’t see that as an option, there is Trapster. Trapster is a free smartphone app that “maps out and alerts users in real time to the presence of live police speed traps, red light cameras, speed cameras, and areas where police often hide,” says Wikipedia.

Personally, I think Trapster developer Pete Tenereillo really missed out on a fortune by not charging for this app. This dude would be a multimillionaire if all of the people who have downloaded Trapster had paid for it. I wonder if he’s so well off that he doesn’t need cheap payday loans or the cash he would have made from Trapster.

More Trapster features

As if warning you about nearby cops and cameras weren’t enough to get every smartphone-having driver out there interested in Trapster, it does more. Trapster users can use it to log trip data and even share it on Facebook and Twitter.

Some people think the idea of letting a whole big, public social network know exactly where you are is creepy and dangerous, but others think exactly the opposite is true. I definitely think it’s good to let people close to you know where you are and what you’re doing when you’re away from home, but I keep my Facebook profile private so not just anyone can use information on it to track me down.

Trapster as a financial planning tool

Of course, no one wants to get a speeding ticket. They are super expensive, and when you tack on the possibility that it could hike up your insurance rate, it’s even more so. Also, police officers will always look for additional offenses to tack onto your ticket like not wearing a seat belt, dark window tint, you name it.

Not having to deal with the cops and the cost of getting involved in the legal system is definitely a plus, but of course Trapster has been quite the controversial little tool. After all, if drivers know where the cops are, they know where the cops aren’t, and for some that means it’s speed demon time. So I cannot argue with the fact that Trapster does help people break the law.

New Trapster release

Tuesday a new, improved version of Trapster is coming out. CNET says the new version of Trapster features an improved interface, Bluetooth audio, built-in iPod controls, rotating maps and a real-time traffic map. Now, that last one sounds really handy!

After AT&T delayed the launch of the iPhone multimedia messaging service (iPhone MMS) multiple times, the new, free feature will finally be available on iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. If you have an iPhone 2G or iPhone 1G, the wait is not over for you. There’s no word on when iPhone MMS will be available for those models. It might take as long as reaching tax resolution or longer.

PC World reports that AT&T, the exclusive iPhone carrier, would not allow iPhone MMS to launch until the network was ready to handle the additional traffic. PC World also thinks that this was an unnecessary precaution because “the service in question has been out for years on other handsets and hasn’t exactly taken the mobile world by storm.”

What is iPhone MMS?

The new iPhone MMS feature allows users to send photos, audio recordings, video clips or contact information and has a short messaging service. AT&T expects iPhone MMS to create record traffic volumes. In June, when Apple announce the iPhone MMS was ready, AT&T was concerned that it would crash the network.

While the same service on other phones has not generated groundbreaking levels of traffic, in my experience iPhone users have a tendency to take advantage of every feature they can, whether they need to or not.

Analyzing iPhone owners

Why do I think that iPhone users will take advantage of iPhone MMS more often than others have used multimedia messaging services? Well, let’s start with the fact that I at any given moment, in any place, I can tell you which of the people who I know in the room have an iPhone.

I do not know what type of phone anyone else has. I’m not even sure what type of phone my boyfriend has. But I know who has an iPhone. That is because iPhone users are constantly pulling out their phones to play games, look at pictures and most often to show people something after saying “Hey, check out how cool this is.” So my guess is that AT&T traffic will indeed spike because iPhone users will want to use iPhone MMS just because they can.

The whole truth

Is it fair for me to stereotype iPhone users? Maybe not. But any iPhone users reading this already know the truth: I taunt because I am jealous. I can’t tell you how many times I have been sitting on a bus or in a waiting room or some other situation where I really wished I could listen to music or play a game or surf the Internet on my phone.

If I had an iPhone, I would probably use iPhone MMS. As it is, I often send my friends songs through instant messaging services online. I am not much of a picture-taker, but I think if I had a device that could both take photos and send them to people that would probably change. I would probably use it on a daily basis, just to send my friends photos with messages attached that said things like “Look at this cute puppy!” or “Get a load of this guy’s hat.”

I am aware of the fact that this is what I would use my iPhone for, which is why I haven’t sprang for one yet. Someday, though, I’m sure I’ll realize I cannot live without being connected to the internet at all time. I’m already pretty close.

I was very surprised today when I found out about the number of birthday freebies that are available. It makes me wonder why I bothered to spend all that money on birthday dinners and lunches and treats before. For many birthday freebies, though, you must sign up before your birthday in order to get your birthday freebie.

For some birthday freebies you can just walk in and flash your ID, but many you must join a club in advance to get your birthday freebies. Signing up for birthday freebies, though, doesn’t take any longer than applying for payday installment loans online.

Join the birthday club

If you join the Buffalo Wild Wings club, you can get a coupon for a free dessert on your birthday. You’ll also be notified of special promotions year-round. If you join the Old Spaghetti Factory Kids Club, your children can get free meals on their birthdays.

You get free chips and salsa just for signing up. Not surprisingly, Chuck E. Cheese offers birthday freebies if you join the Chuck E-Club. Sign up for Del Taco’s Raving Fan Club and you can get a free shake on your birthday. If you’re a steak lover, join the Lone Star Steakhouse E-club and get a meal up to $15 free on your birthday.

Birthday freebies just for showing up

At Chevy’s Fresh Mex restaurants, you don’t have to sign up in advance, you just have to show up on your birthday to get your birthday freebies. You’ll get free ice cream — and a free sombrero! Check around with your local businesses to find more places who will give you birthday freebies.

Most large chains require you to sign up online in order to get birthday freebies and other special deals. A lot of places have clubs you can sign up for to get free stuff any day of the year.

Every day freebies

Many places will give you free stuff just for signing up for their programs online. Register with the Melting Pot and you can get a coupon for free chocolate fondue. Just click on “free gyros day” in the top left corner. You must supply your full name, address and e-mail address, but you get free food from Kronos Gyros, so it seems like a fair trade.

I guess you have to weight how much you dislike junk mail (e-mail included) and how much you love free food to decide if it’s worth it to take Kronos Gyros up on its offer. Free food sure beats needing mortgage loan modification.

Where is Kronos Gyros?

Do you live in Chicago but don’t know where a Kronos Gyros location is? That’s because Kronos Gyros is a supplier. Kronos Gyros supplies several Chicago eateries with gyros, including BBQ Patio, Felony Franks Hot Dogs, Dog Stop, Pacific Submarine and Papa Chris Place around with several others.

You can find out all of the restaurants Kronos Gyros supplies at the Kronos Gyros web site. Altogether there are 44 participating locations, and when you apply for your coupon you can see a list organized by locations, including Chicago, Northwest, Southwest and tollways.

Why is Kronos Gyros giving out free food?

“We love gyros and we want everyone throughout the Chicago area to be Greek for the day, or even just an hour and have a taste of Greece,” senior marketing director of Kronos Foods Valerie Lester told The News Pk. “Chicago is filled with elements of the Greek culture and this is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to Chicagoans for making our company, and the restaurants that sell our food, so popular.”

Kronos Foods has even gone so far as to declare today a holiday called Free Gyros Day, but considering the company is only giving out free gyros in Chicago, this little holiday will have to stay fairly contained. After all, if eating free gyros is the way to celebrate Free Gyros Day, celebrating anywhere outside the Chicago area could get you arrested.

More about Kronos Gyros

Kronos Gyros also supplies baklava, one of my favorite desserts. The company has been around since 1975. Early on Kronos Gyros developed what they call “Gyrokones,” premade gyro sandwiches the company could sell to restaurants. This product helped maintain the consistency of Kronos Gyros and became very popular.

The company’s has one other major invention, the Kronomatic Broiler, which is used to cook the Gyrokones. The Kronos Gyros web site says:

With these two inventions … (owner) Chris Tomaras opened doors of culinary opportunity to restaurant owners and Greek-hungry patrons alike. This proved to be the foundation of Kronos Products, Inc. …

In 1980, Kronos expanded its operations by manufacturing its own Pita Bread and Tzatziki sauce. And so arose the Bakery and Dairy divisions of Kronos, in which several types of Pita Breads as well as Tzatziki sauce are made. In 1999, Kronos further expanded its operations by installing a new, state-of-the-art Pita line capable of producing 50,000 pieces per hour. Kronos currently manufactures eleven varieties of Pita Bread.

Access a university education from home with Academic Earth (Photo: flickr.com)

The more you know, the more socially, intellectually and (in some cases) physically able you become. Being a well-rounded citizen, friend and self-sustaining individual are all ends that can be achieved in large part through education. Unfortunately, many give up on the idea that they have to continue to learn throughout their lives if they want to challenge themselves, grow and live vibrant lives. Too many accept the black and white the world gives, topping it off on rare occasion with a splotch of gray. This is a tragedy, in that the world is filled with veins of colorful experience. Knowledge of how to live – rather than merely subsist – is essential for people of all ages. If the brain isn’t stimulated, the chance of senior onset dementia in later life is increased.

Use your mind while you’ve got it

Some people make good in college and truly expand their mental horizons. Others turn away from that kind of life and choose a trade, an average job or simply to drop out. Still more would love to be exposed to a university education, but lack the funds or the time to actually attend college. Sure, cheap loans or cheap payday loans can help with a little money once in a while, but not enough to bankroll a college education.

Yet there is hope. The popularity of distance learning has exploded across the World Wide Web, resulting in the availability of high-level university lectures covering a wide variety of topics. Two of the best aggregators of this video content are Academic Earth and OpenCulture.com. At no cost to you and on your own time via online video, you can view complete lectures from MIT, Harvard, Yale, Berkley and Princeton, among other esteemed universities. It’s all organized by topic and is easy to search, too.

“Hulu for nerds”

Farhad Manjoo writes for Slate that for anyone who has free time, there’s no excuse to stop learning. He recounts how he was able to hop from one lecture to the next, learning about everything from the origins of the current recession to long-term investing and more. Most of the lectures were very engaging, and for those that weren’t, leaving was as easy as a mouse click. Hop from the lecture halls of one university to the next without the travel costs… in no time at all! Academic Earth, while not an organization that can provide you with college credit, can give you nearly all the same material you’d receive in a traditional college classroom. They give you education when you want it. You can even subscribe in podcast fashion. As Manjoo describes it, “it’s like Hulu, but for nerds.”

And being a nerd is a good thing

<img class="size-full wp-image-48183" title="distractions" src="http://personalmoneystore.com/moneyblog/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/distractions.jpg" alt="Lead a busy life? Academic Earth is available when you need it! (Photo: flickr.com)

Academic Earth picks and chooses the best of the best, and its organization scheme couldn’t be easier to navigate. Google tried to achieve something similar with Knol, but the results were less user-friendly. In both cases, however, you are learning from acknowledged experts in their fields, as opposed to anonymous commentators that tend to color what appears on Wikipedia. Academic Earth, in Majoo’s estimation, bests Knol in that it presents material in the complete context of a course, whereas Knol is comprised solely of articles experts want to contribute at the time.

Academic Earth’s videos are generally of high quality, and make both the professor’s notes and spoken words quite clear. Discussion with students is sometimes included as well, but as the students aren’t speaking directly into microphones, the sound quality of their questions varies. Lecture notes, transcripts, handouts and homework are even available, but as this is all made available at the online student’s leisure, there is no grading pressure. How you use the material is up to you.

No grades?

Well, that isn’t entirely true. Viewers can grade the lectures to help clue the Academic Earth student community at large in to which lecturers pack that extra something that makes learning more fun. The base grade on a given lecture is “B,” but that can change based upon user reviews.

Where’s the profit?

<a href="https://personalmoneystore.com/application.php?ref=button" class="short_apply"style="float:right;" title="Apply Now!" rel="nofollow">Apply Now!

Richard Ludlow, Academic Earth’s founder, ultimately envisions his site as an agent for change. He told BusinessWeek that he hopes it will help lower the cost of education worldwide. But that can’t be done for free, or with just a few cheap loans or with cheap payday loans. While users can view videos for free, Academic Earth is a for-profit company. Thus, Ludlow’s initial plan is to add supplementary content that falls outside the Creative Commons. He will sell advertising on these.

Your college experience may vary

Studies have shown that distance learning can be highly effective, so the future of sites like Academic Earth is bright. Currently they do not replace a college diploma (as they are not an accredited academic institution), but who knows what the future will hold? I don’t believe online only education can ever fully replace the traditional college experience (some would argue the social element alone is worth the price of admission), but a more intense integration of online and on-site learning seems possible.

However, there are plenty of people out there who simply want to learn and are not worried about whether they’ll receive college credit or grab the reins of that “college experience.” No essays, finals, or boring discussions are to be found on Academic Earth. The bad ones generally don’t make it onto the site, and the lukewarm tend to be voted into oblivion by the user base. Plug in and spend an afternoon expanding your mind. Tune into one of Academic Earth’s playlists, even. But this isn’t merely an iTunes list of rock anthems or slow jams… it’s the tune a happy brain plays when it’s filled with interesting food for thought.

Arby’s holding month long promotion

Customers can get a free roast beef sandwich at Arby’s today with purchase of a beverage. But wait! There’s more! This marks the start of Arby’s Free Wednesday, a promotion that will continue each week for the month of August.

There will be a different free item available each week. I know what they are, but to find out you’ll have to read all the way to the end! Or, you know, skip to there. The last Arby’s Free Wednesday will be Aug. 26.

Increasingly popular marketing technique

Arby’s isn’t the only chain giving out free stuff this month. Domino’s is promoting its new Chocolate Lava Crunch Cake by offering a free piece with purchase of a PastaBread Bowl. The PastaBread Bowl is also a relatively new item at Domino’s, so a little cross-promotion might help.

Arby’s Free Wednesday does follow the common free-with-purchase rule, so if you’re living on a short term personal loan, you might want to think twice before spending borrowed money on a soft drink. Still, if you’re a soda drinker anyway, the free sandwich is a great deal. Baja Fresh had a similar promotion to Arby’s Free Wednesday recently when it gave out free burritos with purchase of a drink.

Internet promotion

A lot of chains have been offering free stuff lately, including Chick-Fil-A, which gave customers free chicken for dressing up like cows last month. Many chains, including KFC and Jack in the Box, are using a different method that’s becoming more popular.

Both of those chains offered free stuff — totally free, not with purchase — but you had to download and print out an online coupon. Yesterday Jack in the Box held free taco Tuesday using the internet coupon method.

Free philosophy

Establishments — especially the type that sell food — know that giving away free stuff is a great way to lure new people into their businesses. This pays off pretty well, otherwise why would they continue to do it? The print and online coupon strategy keeps things under control by keeping too many people from getting free stuff.

The free-entree-with-drink thing, though? That’s pretty genius. You might think that it makes more sense to give a free drink with purchase of entree, but would that really cause a stir and get people who otherwise wouldn’t to come in? Free drink? Snore. But a free sandwich? A free burrito? That gets people excited. Furthermore, fountain drinks barely cost food places anything. Really, we’re talking a few cents. The cup costs more than the soda inside it.

Arby’s Free Wednesday offerings

Next week, Aug. 12, you can get a free Roast Chicken Club, if you buy a drink. Aug. 19 the tables are turned a bit, and you can get a free FruiTea with purchase of any sandwich.

On the final Arby’s Free Wednesday this month, Aug. 26, you can get a free Regular Beef ‘n’ Cheddar with purchase of a soft drink. So there you have it: What to look forward to on Arby’s Free Wednesday.

Is it because of Obama’s birthday? Is it just because “Free Taco Tuesday” has a nice ring to it? Whatever the reason is — and they’re not telling — Jack in the Box is handing out free tacos today.

If you have had Jack in the Box tacos before, you know that they are as far from being Mexican food as you can get while still using a tortilla, but free food is free food — right?

Tempting trends

Giving away free food has quickly become a widely used method for generating business. Of course, this promotional tool has been used since long before we were in a recession, but it appears to me to be more common now.

Of course, only businesses that can afford to give out free products can do this, otherwise they’d have to hand out payroll loans in place of their employee’s paychecks. But big chains like Jack in the Box don’t even flinch about handing out a few thousand free tacos.

Free food frenzy

Case in point, Jack in the Box isn’t the only place handing out free grub today. The other free food distributor today is Domino’s, though the pizza chain is only giving out free stuff in Washington, D.C.

To celebrate Obama’s birthday, Domino’s is giving out free Chocolate Lava Crunch Cake, a brand new menu item they chose to introduce on Obama’s birthday. All month long, anyone can get free cake with order of a BreadBowl Pasta. To sweeten the deal, everyone who can prove it’s their birthday can get a free piece of cake this month.

Free tacos for everyone!

So, while Domino’s is handing out free cake to certain people on certain days with certain purchases, all you need to do to get free tacos from Jack in the Box is print out a coupon. National food chains that do giveaways have widely adopted this method because making customers go through a little bit of effort to get free stuff helps stores to keep from being totally overrun with clientele clamoring for free food.

Oh, and when I say free tacos, I do mean tacos plural. Download this coupon from the Jack in the Box web site, and you can pick up two free tacos at any participating location.

It’ll work. It always works

Food giveaways are so popular now because they are effective. They get people in the door at restaurants and in general manage to get their brands in people’s heads. Free samples are a great way to get people to come back later and buy a new product.

Often people want to try new things, but they are concerned that they won’t like it. This was particularly true in the case of KFC when it introduced grilled chicken after decades of being famous and well-loved for fried chicken. Free coupons got a lot — and I mean a lot — of people to try the new product. Giving stuff out for free makes customers much more likely to try something because they aren’t worried about paying for something they end up hating. So, if you’ve never tried the tacos from Jack in the Box, today’s the day!

Of course, I had no idea this day even existed until I started reading about places handing out free lasagna. Like most totally arbitrary-sound holidays, this holiday does appear to be totally arbitrary.

I don’t know how long National Lasagna Day has been around, I don’t know who started it, and I don’t know why we celebrate it. What I do know is that Spaghetti Warehouse and Buca di Beppo are giving away lasagna. Personally, I’d prefer a fast cash personal loan, but I would never pass up free lasagna on National Lasagna Day.

Spaghetti Warehouse Facebook fans get the goods

On this very special National Lasagna Day, July 29, Spaghetti Warehouse is giving out free lasagna from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., but only to Facebook fans! If you live in the West, forget about it. However, if you live near a Spaghetti Warehouse in Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Illinois, New York, Georgioa, Tennessee or Florida, head to the Spaghetti Warehouse Fan Page on Facebook and become a fan.

You’ll be able to print a coupon that you can redeem for free lasagna to commemorate National Lasagna Day. To find the closest Spaghetti Warehouse to you, check out the store locator on the Spaghetti Warehouse web site. Spaghetti Warehouse promises “a taste of old-world Italy.”

Buca di Beppo spreads the lasagna love

From what I can tell, anyone who dines in for lunch at Buca di Beppo today can get free lasagna with purchase of another meal. So grab a friend, and head to the closest Buca di Beppo (see http://www.bucadibeppo.com/). If going to Buca di Beppo today doesn’t fit into your schedule, you can still get a coupon at http://eclub.bucadibeppo.com/coupons/Buca10off20v2c.html, for $10 off any purchase of $20 or more, and it’s good until Aug. 9.

Buca di Beppo has 87 locations all across the country, so residents in western states such as Washington, California, Nevada and Arizona are in luck. However, it appears that the Midwest is out of luck in the cases of both Buca di Beppo and Spaghetti Warehouse. But everyone can celebrate National Lasagna day at home, just whip up this great recipe and enjoy!

Natalie Rotunda’s Favorite Lasagna

½ lb. lasagna noodles

1-1/2 lbs. organic grassfed beef
½ lb. organic mozzarella cheese
2 free-range eggs, beaten
½ pint organic cottage cheese
¼ cup organic parmesan cheese

1 16-oz. organic spaghetti sauce

Directions

Brown hamburger; if there is any excess fat, drain it.

Meanwhile, cook noodles according to package directions. Drain carefully so as not to split the noodles. Leave in pot until you’re ready to use them.

To the drained meat, add enough spaghetti sauce to make a spreading consistency that is neither too moist nor too dry.

Into a 9×13 baking pan, spread an even, thin layer of spaghetti sauce.

Add three noodles, alongside one other, for a first layer.

Spread half of the meat mixture evenly on top of the first layer.

Sprinkle mozzarella on top of meat mixture.

Add a second layer of noodles. Did I mention careful does it?

In a separate small bowl, mix all of the cottage cheese, and add beaten eggs. Set aside until you lay another layer of noodles. Add all of the cottage cheese/egg mixture, spreading evenly.

Top with third layer of noodles.

Spread the rest of the meat mixture.

One more layer of noodles, on top of which spread the last of the spaghetti sauce. Cover all of the noodles, otherwise, they’ll become dry and hard to eat.

Sprinkle parmesan on top.

Bake for 35 minutes in a 350 degree oven. Allow the dish to rest for 10-15 minutes before cutting into it.

Vegetarian lasagna

Of course, I don’t want to leave out all of my vegetarian friends. I know how much they hate that. Well, what I hate is eggplant, and most basic vegetarian lasagna recipes use a lot of it. However, I managed to find this recipe that has a lot of delicious vegetables and no eggplant! After reading through this recipe, I don’t even think I’d miss the meat. I’d definitely add extra cayenne, though.

“Raise the Roof” Sweet Potato Lasagna

onion, chopped

1 small head of garlic, all cloves chopped or pressed

8 ounces mushrooms, sliced

1 head broccoli, chopped

2 carrots, chopped

2 red bell peppers, seeded and chopped

1 can corn, rinsed and drained

1 package Silken Lite tofu

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

1 teaspoon oregano

1 teaspoon basil

1 teaspoon rosemary

2 jars pasta sauce (see E2-Approved Foods)

2 boxes whole grain lasagna noodles

16 ounces frozen spinach, thawed and drained

2 sweet potatoes, cooked and mashed

6 roma tomatoes, sliced thin

1 cup raw cashews, ground

Preparation:

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.

Sauté the onion and garlic on high heat for 3 minutes in a wok or nonstick pan. Add the mushrooms and cook until the onions are limp and the mushrooms give up their liquid. Remove them to a large bowl with a slotted spoon. Reserve the mushroom liquid in the pan. Sauté the broccoli and carrots for 5 minutes and add to the mushroom bowl. Sauté the peppers and corn until just beginning to soften. Add them to the vegetable bowl.

Drain the silken tofu by wrapping in paper towels. Break it up directly in the towel and mix into the vegetable bowl. Add spices to the vegetable bowl and combine.

To Assemble:
Cover the bottom of a 9-by-13-inch casserole with a layer of sauce. Add a layer of noodles. Cover the noodles with sauce. This way the noodles cook in the oven, saving time and energy. Spread the vegetable mixture over the sauced noodles. Cover with a layer of noodles and another dressing of sauce. Add the spinach to the second layer of sauced noodles. Cover the spinach with the mashed sweet potatoes. Add another layer of sauce, the final layer of noodles, and a last topping of sauce. Cover the lasagna with thinly sliced roma tomatoes.

Cover with foil and bake in the oven for 45 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle with the cashews, and return to the oven for 15 minutes. Let sit for 15 minutes before serving.

Just when I thought the days of tying regular promotions to the economy and the recession were over, Mars has come out with the Real Chocolate Relief Act. The official Real Chocolate Relief Act web site, at realchocolate.com, says “Times are tough and we at Mars want to help.”

Mars says it is giving away free chocolate to help in tough economic times, and it is also highlighting the fact that Mars candy is made with real chocolate.

Taking pride in chocolate

Here is the explanation from Mars for why their chocolate is superior to certain other candy makers’ chocolate:

“For nearly 100 years, we’ve made chocolate with 100% cocoa butter, which is the taste bud-craving, melt-in-your-mouth chocolate you expect from Mars. Without cocoa butter, chocolate simply is not chocolate.

Some companies use artificial ingredients to make their chocolate sweeter or because it’s cheaper. Know that with Mars, there is no substitute for cocoa butter. We know you prefer Real Chocolate. And that’s what we plan to deliver.”

So, if you sometimes find yourself applying for a same day loan to support your sweet tooth, you can apply for the Real Chocolate Relief Act.

Application for chocolate intake modification

Starting this Friday, July 31, you can go to the RealChocolate web site and plug in your e-mail address. Of everyone who provides their e-mail address, 250,000 people will get a coupon each week for free chocolate

You must apply on Friday for the duration of the promotion, but you can apply every Friday. The promotion lasts throughout September, so you’ve got two months worth of Fridays to try for your free chocolate.

Who decides what’s chocolate?

Mars says on its web site that the U.S. government has written up standards on what qualifies as real chocolate. The Real Chocolate Relief Act web site says:

“U.S. Standards of Identity are government regulations that define which ingredients may be used to make a food product in order to be allowed to call it by a certain name. For chocolate, the Standards of Identity require that cocoa butter be the only source of fat (except for milk fat). There are several other requirements too, such as a specific amount of chocolate liquor, use of flavorings and sugar substitutes.”

The web site also says if candy wrappers say things such as “chocolate flavoring,” “chocolaty” or “made with chocolate,” those products probably aren’t made with the approved chocolate ingredients.

All in the family

Mars is one of the largest privately owned corporations in the U.S. as the business still belongs to the Mars family — the same family that opened the first Mars Candy Factory in 1911.

The business really took off with the invention of the Milky Way bar, which became the country’s best-selling candy bar after it was introduced in 1923. Today, though the global CEO of Mars Inc., Paul Michaels, is one of the first company CEOs who is not a member of the Mars family, the company is still owned by the family. The family now oversees the business as a council or board of directors.

Baja Fresh free burritos today only

You can get a free burrito at Baja Fresh if you get there before 9 p.m. tonight. Of course, you do have to purchase a drink, but still, who could pass up that deal? Wait, wait! Don’t run out the door yet.

To get your free burrito, you must get Baja Fresh coupons. Keep reading for instructions.

Baja Fresh on Facebook

You can get your free burrito Baja Fresh coupons from the restaurant’s Facebook page. If that link doesn’t work, go to the Baja Fresh Facebook page and find the posting on the Baja Fresh wall. The coupon is posted as a photo.

Of course, you must have a Facebook account in order to print the coupon and get a free burrito from Baja Fresh. But don’t worry, joining Facebook isn’t like filling out a personal loan application, it only takes a second.

Find a Baja Fresh, get a free burrito

To find the Baja Fresh nearest to you, use the store locator on the Baja Fresh official web site. Baja Fresh has about 300 locations in the U.S., and its headquarters are in Cypress, California.

For health-conscious individuals and calorie-counters, there is a nutritional table on the company’s web site as well.

Rocky road

Baja Fresh has been on a bit of a financial rollercoaster for the past decade or so. According to Wikipedia:

In 2002, Baja Fresh became a wholly owned subsidiary of Wendy’s International with a purchase price of $275 million. Under Wendy’s ownership the original Baja Fresh menu of freshly prepared-on-site ingredients was replaced with standard fast-food joint staples and sales at the chain predictably slid, and it quickly began to lose money. On November 28, 2006, Wendy’s sold Baja Fresh to David Kim, a private investor consortium for $31 million.

I guess that proves that one size doesn’t fit all when it comes to fast food formulas. Also, I couldn’t find a lot of information on the company’s current financial situation, but if Baja Fresh is handing out free burritos, that must mean they are doing OK.

Personal review

I don’t live near a Baja Fresh now, but I used to several years ago, before the place was sold to Wendy’s. The company’s web site now says “you won’t find freezers, can openers or microwaves in a Baja Fresh,” so clearly things have gone back to the pre-Wendy’s operating procedure.

I really liked Baja Fresh a lot because the food is not at all greasy, and there are so many different types of salsa. I really love spicy food, and Baja Fresh definitely has the right stuff to spice your food up. If you have never tried it before and you live near a Baja Fresh, I personally recommend that you try a free burrito. I hope this promotion does help Baja Fresh’s business. It is nice to have inexpensive alternatives to fast food.

Is a trip to Starbucks a part of your morning ritual? It is for so many people, even though the difficult economy has made a venti cappuccino habit less financially viable than it would have been in better days. However, Starbucks realizes two things:

If you’re going to get a good start in the morning, whether it be at work or at school, you need more than coffee to stay balanced.

People need freebies more than ever these days; there are enough reasons why we need quick cash from cheap loans. A balanced breakfast shouldn’t be one of them.

How do you get your free pastry?

Make sure you bring in this coupon!

Publications everywhere are publicizing this free Starbucks event. The Dayton Business Journal reports that the coffee megalith will provide every beverage-purchasing customer who wants one a free pastry. The giveaway will occur on Tuesday, July 21 only, from the time a store opens until 10:30 a.m. (or until the pastry supply is gone). Only dedicated Starbucks stores are participating, which means Barnes and Noble cafes will not be participating in this offer. Furthermore, Hawaii and airports are also not in on this deal.

If morning coffee is your mantra, add a pastry to your focus on Tuesday, July 21!

In case you missed it

What pastries are included in this offer by Starbucks? I’m glad you asked, freebie lover! You’ll have your choice of a muffin, scone, bagel, croissant, roll, bread, pound cake, morning bun, coffeecake, cheese Danish, apple fritter, tart, piece of pie or other pastry. That’s pretty inclusive, so if you’re planning a Starbucks run Tuesday morning, you’d be a fool to pass this up. Unless you’re gluten intolerant – then I’d say you’re being safe. However, Starbucks does offer some gluten-free pastries, so even you would have no excuse. Eat! Eat! Eat! It’s free! Free! Free! No quick cash for cheap loans required!

I am a native Southern Californian who grew up exposed to Mexican border culture. Whenever I went to a San Diego Padres game with my family, the call of that concessions staple this is hot dogs was always present. I like a hot dog as much as the next guy, but living in San Diego presented certain regional options. One of those was the fish taco, which I love.

A delicious concoction from Baja, tacos de pescado consist of fried or grilled fish, lettuce or cabbage, pico de gallo and a splash of sour cream or citrus/mayonnaise sauce. The delicious mixture is contained within a corn or flour tortilla. Street vendors in Mexico sell these, but they’re also very popular in California, Washington and Colorado, according to Wikipedia. Since they aren’t expensive, secured loans for quick cash aren’t necessary to make or partake of such fishy goodness.

Get Fish Tacos FREE at Long John Silver’s TODAY, 7/14!

That’s right. Until 2:30 p.m., go to your local participating Long John Silver’s and you can get your hands on and your mouth around a Free Baja Fish taco. No additional purchase is necessary, and only one is available per customer. You can dine in, carry out your order or drive through for your free fish taco. Get moving!

Wienerschnitzel has a competing deal

Not to be outdone, the maven of fast food hot dogs that shall be known as Weinerschnitzel is offering FREE Chili Dogs or Free small ice cream cones from 5 to 8 p.m. Apparently July is National Hot Dog Month, which seems appropriate considering that the summer weather is fine and everybody loves to break out the outdoor grill and have a party. Hot dogs are often on the menu.

Don’t every say we don’t look out for you!

Personal Money Store wishes you a happy summer and hopes that no matter how bad the recession gets, you keep your taste buds on the loose for little culinary bargains like this. Whether you like fish tacos, chili dogs or ice cream, there’s sure to be something to please even the pickiest eaters in your family. And remember, FREE means no secured loans or quick cash.
This is just about the strangest promotional strategy I have ever heard of. Chick Fil A today will give a free meal to anyone who is dressed, or partially dressed, like a cow.

Chick Fil A has long been using the “Eat Mor Chikin” advertising campaign, which incorporates cows who encourage people to eat poultry. Now Chick Fil A has gone ahead and invented a holiday, Cow Appreciation Day, to keep their marketing ploy advancing.

Chick Fil A store locator

I don’t have a Chick Fil A in my area, so I don’t know details about the menu, but Chi Fil A says anyone dressed up for Cow Appreciation Day will get a free combo meal.

Getting free food is an excellent way to avoid needing to get a loan till payday. Use the restaurant locator at the official Chick Fil A web site to find the one closest to you.

Costume ideas

Are you willing to celebrate Cow Appreciation Day in costume, but not sure where to start? Well, well, well, look what we have here. Click on that link and then click on “costume kit.” Voila, you can print out a cow costume. Cutouts and instructions are provided.

If you don’t have a printer or don’t want to use the Chick Fil A costume kit, here are some ideas from Melissa Amon at Examiner.com:

Wear a white shirt. Cut out circles from black construction paper and pin them on both sides of the shirt. Use headbands to make ears and some rope or string to make a tail. Your kids may enjoy a little bit of black spots of their faces. Use washable paint or washable markers.

More about Cow Appreciation Day

Chick Fil A says this is the fifth annual cow appreciation day. However, this is the first I have ever heard of it. Has Chick Fil A really been bribing people to dress up like cows every year for five years? If so, how did I miss it?

Chick Fil A has done free food promotions before, so if they’re doing it again, it must be working for them.

Effective marketing

When I first heard the idea of dressing like a cow to get a free meal, I thought it was so ridiculous that no one would do it. However, since laughingly telling my friends about it, I can report that there are at least a few 20-somethings out there who are totally willing to dress like a cow for free chicken, and they will likely actually do it.

More Chick Fil A news

Cow Appreciation Day isn’t the only thing Chick Fil A is celebrating today. Bloomberg.com reports:

Chick-fil-A Inc., the Atlanta-based chicken sandwich chain, plans to open three restaurants in Chicago next year, its first locations in the city as the company expands in the northern U.S.

The closely held company will open the locations “next fall” and add as many as four restaurants in the region in 2011 and 2012, said Dan Cathy, president and chief operating officer. Chick-fil-A has more than 1,400 restaurants in 38 states, mostly in the Southeast and California.

She recommends that you only buy meat on sale. She uses ecoupons but also clips coupons out of newspapers. She reminds readers that she lives in the Midwest, where grocery prices are generally lower than the rest the country.

She has more than 200 recipes posted on her blog, and she says she values health just much as frugality. Despite her one-income household, she never needs short-term loans to afford groceries.

More benefits of Five Dollar Dinners

Besides saving money and being healthy, Chase is enthusiastic about teaching her two young sons good eating habits. She always uses her grocery store club card, and she recommends that readers come up with their own dinner dollar amount based on their family size and the prices at their local grocery store.

Recipes

Chase has traditional, simple meals such as $5 Tacos and Fish ‘n’ Chips. She has some pretty creative ideas for meals on there, too. Although the site is called $5 Dinners, there are breakfast recipes such as Banana Stuffed French Toast, Breakfast Tacos and Bacon and Tomato Omelets.

Dinner recipes include ideas such as Blueberry Wild Rice and Butternut Squash, Mango Avacado Soup, Lasagne Roll Ups, “Cheater” Chicken Divan and Bacon Wrapped Pork Roast. I am a little skeptical about the healthy aspect of that last one, but she includes the prices of her ingredients in the recipes, so I know it was a $5 Dinner.

Let’s face it. You need money. So do I. I’ve used payday loans at times. We all need money, particularly during these difficult economic times. Business Pundit reports that there’s a new way to find out if the government has money stashed away for you. Straight from the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators has unveiled MissingMoney.com at http://missingmoney.com/, a Web site that enables allowing people to claim funds entitled to them that have been floating around in the system unclaimed.

Here’s how it works, according to Business Pundit: State governments are holding on to nearly $33 billion in unclaimed checks, refunds, and other property. MissingMoney.com is ready to act as your guide into that shadowy world. You can find out whether your state’s government has cold, hard cash just sitting around with your name on it – or any of your relatives’ names. Anna Prior of the Wall Street Journal elaborates:

Wishing for extra cash? You may be entitled to some of the nearly $33 billion in unclaimed property sitting in state governments’ coffers. These are sums that businesses were required to turn over to the states after no activity or contact with the owner after a period of a year or more… Items can include dividend or payroll checks that haven’t been cashed, refunds, trust distributions, unredeemed money orders, insurance payments or refunds, annuities, certificates of deposit, customer overpayments and the contents of safe-deposit boxes.

Here’s what you do

MissingMoney.com includes records from most states, excluding New York and California. For those states, check unclaimed.org for more information. All of this is free of charge!

Search for the names of deceased relatives who may have unclaimed property. Prove that you are the legal heir and you can claim those accounts, writes Business Pundit. In the event of a match, keep in mind that you will have to submit the proper claim form with the state in question. As always, proper documentation will also be necessary. Best of luck in your search for unclaimed money. Thankfully, missingmoney.com makes it easy.
