Yahoo! Sports reports that St. Louis Cardinals ace pitcher Adam Wainwright won’t be winning any games in 2011. The right-hander will be out for all of 2011 and some of 2012 while rehabilitating from elbow surgery. Combined with the news that the team was unable to get star slugger Albert Pujols to sign an extension, 2011 could turn out to be a long season for the redbirds.

The Adam Wainwright elbow injury, the St. Louis Cardinals confirmed, will require Tommy John Surgery, aka an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction. It involves the replacement of the damaged elbow ligament with a tendon taken from either the forearm, hamstring, knee or foot. The reason it is often called “Tommy John” is because that was the name of the first person to get the surgery. Major League pitcher Tommy John got the surgery in 1974 when it was still experimental.

Adam Wainwright’s prognosis was confirmed Thursday at the St. Louis Cardinals’ training facility in Jupiter, Fla. The 29-year-old pitcher relies heavily upon the curveball, so full elbow ligament flexibility is essential. Pitchers Chris Carpenter, Kyle Lohse, Jaime Garcia and Jake Westbrook will be relied upon for the Cardinals 2011. It’s a tough spot to fill; Wainwright won 39 times in the past two seasons.

St. Louis might not make it past July

It is unlikely that Albert Pujols will re-sign with the St. Louis Cardinals if a replacement for Adam Wainwright doesn’t show up for 2011. It will be hard for the Cardinals to replace Pujols mid-season because of no-trade provision in his contract. Without an adequate substitution for Wainwright, the best the Cardinals may be able to hope for is that Pujols will drop his no-trade clause so they can get something back from whichever team is willing to pay Pujols the $30 million a year, 10-year contract he wants.

I’m listening to a Halloween rebroadcast of the classic Mercury Theatre on the Air radio production of “War of the Worlds.” The lights are low and I’m feeling fine, even though I am alone, in the dark and by myself. OK, that’s only partly true. I’m creeped out, man. Orson Welles has me glued to my chair.

First aired on October 30, 1938, “War of the Worlds” still has the power to scare listeners, even though today we’re supposedly more sophisticated and understand that a Martian invasion isn’t really happening. I know that logically, but with the signs of water that we’ve recently discovered on Mars, I can’t be too sure. Once the giant, flaming Martian cylinder falls on Grover’s Mill, New Jersey at 8:50 p.m., the roots begin to work their way into my mind.

They Come From Beyond

As the news reporter struggles for words to explain the foreboding mystery monolith from the deep, dark sky, the hairs stand up on my neck and my heart speeds up to a half-run – a “what’s going on here” prelude to a hell-bent sprint for my life. Once the craft opens, revealing the salivating gray snake creature, my mind is screaming out of the ballpark. I have to hold on for dear life to my chair, white-knuckled, or risk stumbling over my shoes and becoming one with the radiator. Luckily, my cat isn’t around to see me like this; he looks to me for strength. He’s a very odd cat.

I’m managing not to have a heart attack, and then the military begins to bomb the vile space conquerors. As soon as the bombs go off, I hear a series of strange sounds that aren’t part of the program. Out on the lawn there is such a clatter, I wake from fear to see what’s the matter. I run outside (managing not to trip on my shoes, or put them on) and discover some neighbor kids dressed in alien costumes. They’re terrorizing my poor cat with their Martian masks! I have to help him!

Casualties of War and the Need for an Online Payday Loan

Gathering all the strength I can muster, I run at the kids like a Martian-stomping machine. Or a mildly annoyed soccer fan. Or something like that. Anyway, I manage to scare the kids away and give kitty an escape route.

Crushed by deer meat

Nothing really gets me down. But I was nearly crushed by my deer meat adventure… that is, until cash loans saved me from feeling down.

My story

This happened to me a couple of winters ago, so I can look back at it now and laugh. However, since it’s the second time I’ve come here for help from cash loans (with nothing but great service to show for it, I would add), I felt inspired to tell you about what happened to me.

The stairs

You see, I love deer meat. Venison has the taste and texture that just feels right on my tongue. Yet it’s hard to keep enough of it on hand in my place, for a couple of reasons. First of all, I live in a third-floor apartment, and the stairwell leading up to my floor is a bit narrow. During the winter, those steps freeze over, and the landlord never gets up off his duff to salt them down. Second, since I love venison so much, I always want more.
