Looking for Bay to Breakers Race Results

In order to get an official time, the runner (or walker) must cross the timing mats at both the Start and Finish lines. The Affordable Art Fair in Manhattan is offering free admission on Mothers Day only to children 12 and younger and their moms from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you don’t live in Manhattan, look around and see if there is an art fair or museum that will be free on Sunday near you. What will the newly combined Continental, United airline be called?

The combined airline will be called United and will be based in United’s hometown of Chicago, but it will be run by Continental CEO Jeffery Smisek. The present United CEO, Glenn Tilton, will become the chairman of the new airline.

What are the airline statistics?

United is the nation’s third-largest carrier by traffic. Continental Airlines Inc., based in Houston, is the country’s fourth largest. Continental is valued at $3.2 billion. The current largest carrier is Delta Air Lines who in 2008, purchased Northwest airlines to make them the largest. After the combination of the Continental and United, there will be three major international airlines in the U.S.: the new United, Delta and American Airlines. UAL, who is the parent company of United, reported a smaller-than-expected $82 million loss for the first quarter of 2010 with a revenue jump of 15 percent, which was the biggest increase among the six largest U.S. carriers. There are signs of a gradual recovery in air travel overall.

What will happen to the staff?

The pilots’ union for the current United says they will defend their pilots. There is no word as to other staff or the flight attendants. I guess we will learn more in the next few days as everything unfolds.

What about stock prices?

The two companies are still settling differences over the price of stocks and how to value each other’s shares for a stock-swap transaction. Two years ago, the same companies came close to merging but decided at the last minute it was too risky to merge at that time of high oil prices and because of big losses in the airline industry.

Personalized results postcards will be mailed to registered finishers of Bloomsday 2010 in the days following the run. If you can’t wait for those results, The Pacific Northwest Inlander will be distributed on Tuesday, May 4, with the complete Bloomsday 2010 results, including each finisher’s name, time and how they placed. Bloomsday History

The first Bloomsday run was May 1, 1977, in Spokane. This year celebrates the 34th run of the 12k road race. Started by Don Kardong, an Olympic Marathon runner and Spokane resident, it was originally advertised, “Run With the Stars” because of Kardong’s participation as well as other Olympians Frank Shorter and Herm Atkins. The stars continue to run Bloomsday as well as elite athletes who travel from all over the world to compete.

This year, two-time Bloomsday champion Lineth Chepkurui of Kenya attempted to win her third consecutive title, which has only been done by a woman twice before. Moroccan star Ridouane Harroufi graced the running field, while running legend Joan Samuelson also joined in the race. There’s also an elite wheelchair division as well as regular runner, joggers and walkers. Did you run? How did you do? How did the elite runners do?
