Just in time for Thanksgiving, a turkey recall has been instituted. Relatively small in scope, the New Braunfels Smokehouse turkey recall covers 2,600 pounds of ready-to-eat turkey. A potentially fatal bacteria called listeriosis may have contaminated the turkey.

Turkey recall affects 2,600 pounds

There are 2,600 pounds of turkey affected by the 2010 turkey recall. Only ready-to-eat turkey products produced on Aug. 4, 2010, could possibly contaminated. The New Braunfels Smokehouse products were produced in Texas and shipped nationwide under the brand names Stegall and New Braunfels.

Products included in the turkey recall

All products included in the turkey recall have the USDA inspection code P-975 inside the USDA inspection mark. Four packages are included in the recall:

  • 4 to 6 pound packages of Stegall Spiral Sliced Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast. These packages have 2108 or 2210 on the label.
  • 4 to 6 pound packages of Stegall Boneless Hickory Smoked Turkey Breast. The code 2210 is printed on the label
  • 4 to 6 pound packages of New Braunfels Honey-Glazed Spiral Sliced Smokehouse Hickory Smoked Boneless Breast of Turkey. This package has the code 2180 on the label.
  • Single pound packages of New Braunfels Smokehouse Sliced Smoked Turkey. This package has the code 2210 on the label.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has issued this recall after the Food Safety and Inspection Service identified the Listeria bacteria in the meat products.

The risk of listeriosis

Listeriosis is a disease caused by the bacteria listeria monocytogenes. Healthy adults do not usually get listeriosis from consuming contaminated foods. However, listeriosis can be a fatal disease. High fever, stiff neck, nausea and severe headaches can all be the result of listeriosis. Pregnant women can have miscarriages and stillbirths as a result of listeriosis. If you think you may have listeriosis, contact a doctor immediately. New Braunfels Smokehouse can be contacted to answer any questions about the recall by calling 1-800-537-6932.
