Oklahoma Earthquake | 4.3 quake does no significant damage

This morning, at 9:06 local time, an Oklahoma earthquake hit about six miles east of Norman, Okla. The 4.3 magnitude quake was centered about 3.1 miles below the surface of the earth. No major damage or injuries have been reported as a result of the Oklahoma earthquake.

Oklahoma earthquake felt across the state

The Oklahoma earthquake this morning was felt across a wide swath of the country. As far away as Dallas/Fort Worth, individuals are reporting feeling the shaker. The very shallow earthquake meant that the shaking was felt over a much wider diameter than earthquakes are usually felt. The U.S. Geological Survey is reporting that the earthquake was “probably” not enough to cause significant damage.

Hall Park, Oklahoma damaged by earthquake

The only damage reported as a result of the Oklahoma earthquake has been in the small town of Hall Park, Okla. Buildings in many small cities as well as Oklahoma City were well-shaken, however. The damage in Hall Park is relatively minor, and should be easy to repair. The U.S. Geological Survey quantifies earthquakes in the 4.0 to 4.9 range as “light.” Rattling noises and indoor shaking is normal, but the likelihood of major damage is unlikely.

The magnitude of the Oklahoma earthquake

Th Oklahoma earthquake is being reported as anything from a 4.2 to 4.9 magnitude. The USGS has reported it as 4.3. The specific magnitude of the Oklahoma earthquake will not be settled for a few days, most likely.

Most didn’t realize it was an Oklahoma earthquake

The reports coming in over social networks and through traditional media are all saying the Oklahoma earthquake was minor. Most individuals who felt the earthquake did not even realize that it was, in fact, a quake. Some say the shaking felt like a strong wind. Others say the earthquake felt more like a settling of the ground.
