Doodle4Google is a chance for K-12 students from U.S. schools to win money for their college education and their schools. Google has featured more than 300 doodles on its U.S. website over the years. This year’s winning Doodle4Google was designed by a third-grader hoping to bring awareness to rainforest habitat, as announced on the Official Google Blog: The 2010 Doodle 4 Google winner post.
Doodle4Google — the contest
The Doodle4Google contest is a competition that more than 20,000 schools participated in. In partnership with the National Design Museum, the Smithsonian and Cooper-Hewitt, Google is sponsoring this contest for a third year. Google and the sponsors award the Doodle4Google winner a $15,000 scholarship and a laptop computer. The winner’s school also gets $25,000 to create or improve a computer lab. Doodle4Google also awards laptops to finalists, top schools and more. These awards are a lot of guaranteed payday loans for cash-strapped schools.
Doodle4Google – the theme
The theme of Doodle4Google this year was “If I could Do Anything, I Would…” Winner McKenzie Melton doodled a Google logo that gave a nod to the disappearing rainforest habitat. Her statement about her choice of Doodle4Google topics was:
I chose this doodle because the rainforest is in danger and it is not fair to the plants and animals. I love everything except spiders and snakes, but I would still save them.
McKenzie’s winning Doodle4Google was displayed on the Google homepage on May 27, and will be added to the archives of Google Doodles that already contains hundreds of former Doodles.
Doodle4Google – the exhibition
All the entries for Doodle4Google this year will be exhibited in a Doodle4Google art installation. The National Design Museum will hold a national, public exhibit of the thousands of entries. From May 27 to July 8 of this year, anyone can stop by the exhibition to see the Doodle4Google entries.
