Disgraced former Mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick has been found guilty of violating the terms of his probation. Part of his probation was that he was required to make restitution payments from earlier court cases, and he failed to make sufficient payments. He was sentenced to five years for violating his parole, and he must serve no less than one year and six months behind bars for parole violations. He was a controversial figure in and out of office.
Kwame Kilpatrick sentenced to five years
In 2008, Kwame Kilpatrick pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice, and he served 99 days in jail. He was ordered to repay $1 million to the City of Detroit for the offenses. The presiding justice, Judge David Groner, issued a warrant for his arrest after he failed to make payments on time. Kwame Kilpatrick also was accused of hiding assets from the court, including real estate and Cadillac Escalades. He said he was oblivious as to who had paid for them, according to the New York Times. A hefty personal loan for an attorney would do him no good, apparently.
The original scandals
The two scandals that brought Kwame Kilpatrick down would make Rod Blagojevich proud. First, he used city-owned equipment to send graphic, personal text messages Christine Beatty, his chief of staff, and the two were having an extramarital affair. When an investigation began in 2007, he fired two police officers to prevent them from discovering it. He was sued, and he committed perjury to cover the affair during the trial. He settled for $8.4 million and was then indicted on eight felony counts including perjury and obstruction of justice. He pleaded guilty to the latter, serving 99 days, stepped down as mayor and was ordered to pay the city $1 million, which he failed to do.
Violation of Parole
Kwame Kilpatrick’s latest news is that he failed to make sufficient payments. After Judge Groner looked at his finances, he found Kilpatrick had not made sufficient efforts to repay the debt. Kilpatrick pleaded for leniency, but the judge was not impressed. Kilpatrick did not pass go, nor collect $200, and instead is heading to prison for no less than 18 months.
