A young daughter at work with dad in what appears to be a home office. On Bring Your Child to Work Day 2010, that counts just as much as an office outside the home.

Today is Bring Your Child to Work Day 2010. It has been celebrated on the fourth Thursday of April since 1993, although it has gone by different names. Originally it was known as Take Our Daughters to Work Day, but by 2003 it was expanded to include boys. The original designation of daughters only, according to Wikipedia, came from Gloria Steinem and the Ms. Foundation for Women back in 1993. The idea was that girls needed more exposure to the workplace in order to counteract gender stereotypes. It took 10 years before the organizers of Bring Your Child to Work Day realized that too was exclusionary, so the holiday came to be known as Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. Bring Your Child to Work Day 2010 is simply a shorter variation on that title. Whether a parent works in a high-rise office or at a payday loans company, families should get involved.

What Bring Your Child to Work Day 2010 gives kids

Per the official Bring Your Child to Work Day 2010 website, the working holiday is intended to get boys and girls thinking about what career they might enjoy and learn how dad or mom conducts business in the workplace. As young children, in particular, tend to be more flexible in terms of gender roles, Bring Your Child to Work Day 2010 is an opportunity to expose open minds to the choices out there in the working world. Perhaps more importantly, it’s an opportunity for parents to teach their children what it means to be a professional and how to conduct themselves in the workplace, be it that high-rise or at the no faxing payday loans company.
