Without question, the Boys & Girls Club of America has done an admirable amount of charity work for the youth of this nation. But when CEOs like Roxanne Spillett take home a total salary of $988,591, it makes some Republican senators nervous. It makes them so nervous that they begin to question whether her organization should be receiving the millions in instant money federal funds they take in each year, according to The Huffington Post.
And Roxanne Spillett has been closing various Boys & Girls clubs
Tax filings indicate that in the same year that Roxanne Spillett took home nearly $1 million, organization officials spent “$4.3 million on travel, $1.6 million on conferences, conventions and meetings and $544,000 in lobbying fees.” That’s high overhead for a non-profit that’s closing down locations. If only the children could tap their blueblood country club buddies into this – then perhaps they’ll be able to keep Boys & Girls clubs open. Maybe the leftovers would be enough for a foosball table, maybe even a box of store brand popsicles!
Is Roxanne Spillett helping the children as she should?
Some children, yes – but could she be doing more? Could she make it with a pay cut during this recession. I don’t know about you, but I could barely make do with a $1 million salary. OK, it isn’t all “salary.” According to The Huffington Post, that amounts to a base salary of $360,774, a $150,000 bonus (was she paid by Kevin Garn, too?), $83,152 in “other compensation,” a whopping $385,000 deferred compensation and $9,165 in nontaxable benefits. Oh well, kids, perhaps you can find safe fun on the street corner.
And… drum roll… Boys & Girls club posted $13.6 million loss
This is also backed up by tax records. The senators responded to this with
“We find it hard to reconcile this loss with the amount spent on executive salaries, perks, and lobbying expenses. We are especially concerned because it is our understanding that some independent clubs have closed or are on the cusp of closing because of a lack of funding.”
Roxanne Spillett is no doubt well aware that the Boys & Girls Club of America received $41 million in government grants (our tax dollars, mind you) and $51 million in gift and contributions. If they spent $57.6 million on grants to local clubs and $37.5 million in salaries and benefits that same year, you can see that something has to give. The Post has the figures.

Spillett’s near $1 million 2008 compensation more than doubled the $462,000 average non-profit/charity CEO money now – and that’s for non-profits with expenses over $100 million per year, according to Charity Navigator. As Charity Navigator President and CEO Ken Berger told the Post, “If you want to be a millionaire, go and work in the for-profit sector.”
