Safe to eat, but smell and taste not up to organization’s standards

Girl Scout cookies come every year, a kind of ritual rite of passage for both little salespeople and our waistlines. Thin Mints, Samoas, Tagalongs, Do-Si-Dos and the like are delicious and sometimes expensive, to the point that we’re driven to payday loans.

When you put down your hard-earned money for a box or two, it seems reasonable that quality should be a given. However, as the recent Girl Scout cookie recall indicates, quality is not always a given. While the organization reports that there are no known safety issues involved, some of their recent crop of Lemon Chalet Creme cookies bore a strange, unappealing smell and taste that failed to meet their quality standards.

How did they get out on the street, then?

It seems to me that quality control begins in the factory. If there’s a problem, it should be caught there and the product should not be released for public consumption. However, Little Brownie Bakers, the company responsible for making the cookies, told the media it may be due to “certain oils in the product breaking down.” Perhaps the oily breakdown occurred in transit.
