Top 10 ways to help Haiti

If you can give, here’s how

The Haiti earthquake has proven to be a great disaster. Many organizations are sending cash advances and other forms of aid to help the Haitian people. I certainly don’t want to take credit for the following info, but I feel it is it is worth bringing to the attention of Personal Money Market readers. Investor and entrepreneur Chris Sacca has compiled “Six Ways You Can Help in Haiti” on his WhatisLeft.org blog, and his readers have added a few more ideas, and these top 10 ways to help Haiti are worth everyone knowing about.

Top 10 ways you can help Haiti

  1. If you are in the United States, text “HAITI” to “90999″ to donate $10 to the Red Cross. This was set up by the U.S. State Department.
  2. Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti aid program enables you to text “Yele” to 501501 to donate $5 to aid the Haitian people.
  3. Partners in Health are on the ground in Haiti and are accepting donations.
  4. Non-profit Architecture for Humanity gets involved in world disasters. As the name would indicate, their focus is providing shelter for displaced peoples.
  5. The cause charity:water works to bring clean water to over a billion people on Earth you need it. The need for clean water following an earthquake such as the one that hit Haiti is tremendous, so every dollar helps. Sacca indicates that charity:water has other partners in Haiti, too.
  6. Don’t give without understanding the place where your money is going. Sacca suggests reading the book “Mountains Beyond Mountains” if you’d like to know about ongoing humanitarian work in Haiti. A documentary film produced by Wyclef Jean entitled “Ghosts of Cité Soleil” should also prove illuminating.
  7. Oxfam America is another notable charity working to help the people of Haiti.
  8. Microfinanciers like Fonkoze (Haiti’s largest) are helping to lift Haitian families out of poverty. Earthquake aid goes a long way toward that end as well.
  9. Don’t forget the Haitian Red Cross/American Red Cross. They have lots of information and donation links. Canadians can use this link.
  10. Finally, a three-for-one. Shelterbox is helping out with tents and survival kits. World Vision is working hard to organize food, clean water, blankets, tents and more. Direct Relief is doing much of the same. Food, goods or even a cash advance. It all helps the Haitian people.
