CMA Awards 2009 Big Winners: Taylor Swift and Taylor Swift

By now, Taylor Swift must be over the insulting incident, courtesy of Kanye West, that took place at the Video Music Awards a few months ago. Taylor Swift won not two, not three but four Country Music Association Awards, taking home the most wins among CMA Awards 2009 winners.

Taylor Swift won Entertainer of the Year, Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year and Music Video of the Year. Other CMA Awards 2009 winners include Brad Paisley for Male Vocalist of the Year, Lady Antebellum for Vocal Group of the Year and Sugarland for Vocal Duo of the Year. Although the CMA Awards were held on Veterans Day, the web site for the Country Music Association says the ceremony is purely for honoring musical talent; the association isn’t collecting money for military loans or anything.

Brad Paisley and Keith Urban won Musical Event of the Year for their duet “Start a Band.” The CMA Awards 2009 winners for “Song of the Year” were Jamey Johnson, James Otto and Lee Thomas Miller, co-writers of “In Color.” Along with its Vocal Group prize, Lady Antebellum took home the win for Single of the Year with “I Run to You.”

Fun fact: “antebellum” means “before the war.” Other CMA Awards 2009 winners were Mac McAnally, who won Musician of the Year, and Darius Rucker, the New Artist of the Year.

CMA and Vetrans Day

This year, the CMA Awards ceremony happened to fall on Vetrans Day, and though the country music genre does have a reputation for being patriotic, it was just a coincidence. Last year, the CMA Awards were held Nov. 12, the day after Vetrans Day, also a Wednesday.

The date of the CMA Awards ceremony has a lot more to do with the television network’s schedule than anything else. ABC’s usual Wednesday night lineup features a slew of new sitcoms, but it was about time for a midseason break and the CMA Awards.
