Everyone knows in Southern California, the money is in Hollywood. “Project Runway” must be trying to maintain steam and profits after the initial excitement when it returned to the air after an extended hiatus.

On “Project Runway” season 6 episode 6, the designers’ challenge was inspired by Hollywood. Each competitor had to choose a film genre and create a costume for a character that would be in that type of movie. Only two people could choose one genre, and the choices were film noir, period piece, western, sci-fi and action-adventure.

A time for science fiction

The designers had to stick to their budgets and couldn’t borrow money like film producers who buy costumes. In honor of the films Hollywood is releasing to the masses this weekend, I’ll focus on the sci-fi aspect of this competition. “Surrogates” and “Pandorum” both hit theaters today.

Conveniently, the winner of “Project Runway” season 6 episode 6 was one of the designers who designed a costume for a sci-fi movie. Nicolas, who is a professional costume designer, created a flowy, white costume for a sci-fi villianess, and he won the competition.

Connecting the dots

Interestingly, the other designer who chose sci-fi lost the competition. Ra’Mon made a reptillian-looking dress that he threw together in the last minute. I think it it had been made better he would have gotten to stick around, but Heidi just couldn’t forgive the poor craftsmanship.

Remember the surfer challenge, when Ra’Mon made that skintight scuba suit that he decided to scrap at the last minute and make a dress? The situation on “Project Runway” season 6 episode 6 was similar. He started out with a skintight, shiny, green uni-tard and began attaching scales to it.

I guess he thought that the “scrap the body suit and make a dress” method was a good one. After all, when he did that before, he won the challenge. However, this time he must have rushed to too much, because Ra’Mon got sent home.
