Neil Patrick Harris steals the show

As Tina Fey accepted the Outstanding Comedy Series award for “30 Rock,” she said “Thank you for keeping us on the air even though we are so much more expensive than a talk show.” With such a huge cast and crew and big stars in many roles, I bet “30 Rock” is indeed a very expensive show to make. However, you just don’t cancel a show that has won Outstanding Comedy Series three years in a row.

There were many times during the awards show while they announced the Emmy winners of 2009 when I felt like I was watching a rerun of last year’s Emmy Awards. Because many of the awards this year went to the same people who won last year, today more people are talking about what a great job Neil Patrick Harris did hosting the show rather than talking about the winners.

Fending off fashion faux pas

Of course, people always have to discuss fashion at an event where people wear dresses that I’d have to take out a small personal loan to afford. Pop culture shows always make the best-dressed and worst-dressed list, no matter what, but this year the Emmy fashions came across as pretty tame.

Think that’s a direct result of the Emmy winners for 2009 getting their night in the spotlight after the MTV Video Music Awards, where Lady Gaga turned heads — and in some cases, stomachs — with her bizarre getups. She wasn’t the only person with crazy clothes, hers were just the craziest, and by comparison Emmy wear was pretty tame.

Emmy Winners 2009

Just as the winner for Outstanding Comedy Series was a repeat of last year, “Mad Men” took home the prize for Outstanding Drama Series again. Other big awards that were repeats: Bryan Cranston for Lead Actor in a Drama Series, Glenn Close for Lead Actress in a Drama Series and Alec Baldwin for Lead Actor in a comedy series.

Lead Actress in a Comedy Series this year went to Toni Colette for “United States of Tara,” which has only been on the air for one season. Some people were surprised that Colette received this award over last year’s winner, Tina Fey. However, as much as I love Tina Fey, Toni Collette’s role, which involves playing five different personalities, is a uniquely challenging role, the likes of which I’ve never seen before. And she nails it.

Not Surprising, but Confusing Emmy Winners 2009

I guess I was surprised by a couple of the Emmy winners for 2009, but it wasn’t because of the actor, it was because of the category. Jon Cryer, who plays Alan on “Two and a Half Men” won the award for Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. How is playing one of the Men in “Two and a Half Men” a supporting role?

Well, I don’t know. But it seems to me that Neil Patrick Harris should stay at home instead of attending the Emmys. He doesn’t look so good. Is he dying of aids or something?

  2. Lisa says:

I can’t believe how well 30 Rock did at the Emmys.
