She sees prostitution as something legal

If South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford steps down from office or is impeached, will Maria Belen Chapur come forward and defend herself against the “home wrecker” cries and all of the accusations made against her? So far she has been silent in the international news; Sanford has shouldered the blame and sopped up the press exposure. However, we both know that in an affair, both parties are equally responsible.
Such is the case with Ashley Dupre, the sometime escort whose liason with New York Governor Eliot Spitzer led to his resignation from office. She doesn’t claim that she was framed or forced to be with Mr. Spitzer, although the financial realities of living in New York definitely had an impact upon her money making ventures. Instant payday loans like those you can apply for with Personal Money Store may help with isolated incidents that threaten to break your budget, but month in and month out, living in the Big Apple is expensive. If you don’t have a support base anywhere else, moving is also rather difficult. Not impossible, but difficult. Ashley Dupre needed money and didn’t have a university education to help get her foot in the door when it came to a job that would provide sufficient income.
People make desperate choices
Apart from theft and inflicting harm upon others, why should people be restricted in what they can do? Those who choose to be rich find an avenue and work hard. Their employment begins to bear fruit, and that fruit inspires them to work harder still.
Ashley Dupre, while no empire builder, did what she had to in order to make ends meet. Part of her plan was working as a high-priced escort, something that many people think should continue to be illegal in this country. It is a field of individual choice: the choice to work and the choice to partake of services. If proper precautions are taken, some would argue, then where is the harm? That’s assuming that sexual intercourse even comes into the transaction – with upper echelon escorts, it doesn’t always. Sometimes people just want to feel “loved” and not be felt. For the customer, they get what they pay for, I suppose.
A glaring sign of a religious state
Ashley Dupre’s blog indicates that she’d like to move on from the scandal, but people won’t let her. My impression upon reading her words is that this stems largely from evangelical America’s hang-up with human sexuality. In particular, its ability to bring people to an ecstatic state that can ultimately show them that religion is unnecessary for couplers to cry out to a higher power. Some dogma suggests it’s shameful and should be tightly controlled, that there would somehow be harm if women had more control over their bodies and the sexual experience. The potential argument over this goes far beyond this forum, but I will say that Ashley Dupre is right to point out that the at-large response to her meeting with Spitzer and her sometime profession comes largely from hypocrites.
She didn’t “bring down the governor”
He did that to himself by cheating on his wife and children. That is a breach of trust issue. If you are in a committed relationship and seek out the services of an escort, you are betraying your relationship partner. Ashley Dupre was providing a service and was not in a position to judge clients based upon their relationship status. She didn’t trap Mr. Spitzer; he called the escort service she worked for.
Furthermore, after attempting to dispel the notion that she “cashed in” on the scandal (I’m not sure how much of that I believe), Ashley Dupre points a well-deserved finger at a culture that drools for any piece of information that could bring down a king. Book publishers were beating down her door to publish a tell-all book, but Dupre claims she refused because she isn’t looking to “glorify and sensationalize” her life. If she wanted to write a book, she claims, she’d do it for the right reasons. Apparently, Dupre is still struggling to make it… but she does hope that her music career takes off. There’s a sample on her blog, so check it out if you’re curious.
But here’s the kicker: Her work isn’t different that what women do but don’t admit
That’s how Ashley Dupre views it. She feels that many of those women who judge her for what she’s done have used sex and sexuality themselves to get what they want. They aren’t breaking the laws of the land when they do that, and Dupre feels it is hypocritical that she should be ostracized and subject to the law for doing what amounts to the same thing: an exchange of goods (or money) for services.
Yes, it is a cynical view of male-female relationships. It doesn’t happen that way for everyone. However, it happens often enough that everyone who reads this article either has done it themselves or knows someone who has. Ashley Dupre calls these “dishonest relationships” in the respect that so few actually admit what it is that they’re doing. As an “official” escort, that’s all brought up front and out in the open. So is the law there so that women (and men) will simply keep what they’re doing quiet?
Here’s Ashley Dupre’s question and statement for the day: “Is that legal? Should it be? Is what I did any more dishonest? Get real and get over yourself.”

Ashley Dupre was only doing her job. I’m not saying she had the best choice of employment, but it wasn’t like she went out there and intentionally tried to break apart a happy family. For this to come down to such a disappointing conclusion, it’s obvious there was no happy family to begin with. I do not feel bad for Ms. Dupre or agree with what she does for a living. There is really no difference between an escort and a prostitute. The only difference is one is classy while the other is trashy. Ashley Dupre was completely aware of what type of business she was in. I’m sure there were many men she “escorted” that were married and had children. Former governor Eliot Spitzer is no exception.
Cry me a river Ashley. My guess is that before she entered into the prostitution enterprise, she knew it was illegal and immoral. What kind of reaction did she expect from women. And no Ashley, we don’t all marry for money. Nor do we date for money. Maybe you should change the class of people you associate with.
It’s unfortunate for her that she was exposed because she was with a governor. But honey, I don’t feel one bit sorry for you. Now if you were to change your ways and become a productive member of society, then we can talk.
Yeah, I have to agree w/Franrose on this one. She was only doing a job that she agreed to do. Essentially, if it wasn’t Ashley Dupre working for that company and providing “services”, we’ll say for clients, it would have been a different woman, and HER name would have been all over the news. So it doesn’t make any difference – and it’s not like Spitzer is the first, nor will he be the last politician to get busted for straying.
@Dana A
Dana, I certainly can’t say that I have sympathy for Ashley Dupre… she put herself into this situation. But I also find it ridiculous that you would consider morality to be in play at all here. Certainly humanity has evolved enough to be able to recognize that a business transaction – while not necessarily to everyone’s taste – has nothing to do with morals unless one party is cheating, exploiting or otherwise harming the other. That didn’t happen here. If you’re hung up on the morality argument here, I’d wager you would either fall into the hypocrite camp which Ms. Dupre refers to or know someone who does. Sorry to bruise the orange of your innocence.
A prostitute knows that many of her clients are married and that the wife and children would feel huge hurt and betrayal if they find out and many times they do so someone is being hurt in prostitute transactions.
She cant just excuse it as “thats the mans personal issue and hes the one thats causing hurt-im just providing a “business” service” or “its not my fault he done this to his wife” etc
Prostitutes know the men are often married so they are as much responsible for the hurt of the families because we as humans are meant to look after each other not be part of causing hurt to each other.
Passing the buck of blame or denying responsibility is not acceptable.
“Ashley Dupre, while no empire builder, did what she had to in order to make ends meet.”
Apparently with excellent results; the ends did meet.
