LeBron James Gets Dunked On Video | Far From Kingly

By Steven Tarlow, your LeBron James gets dunked on video news source

LeBron shows his baby face

I love basketball. It’s a fast-moving sport that combines power, grace, quickness and skill in a mix that alternates between coolly orchestrated set plays and explosive throw-downs that raise the roof. From street ball to high school, college and beyond, there are certain plays that are facts of life in the game. Getting dunked on – aka getting “posterized” – while mildly embarrassing, is one of those plays that will happen during the course of a game. It doesn’t take unsecured loans for quick cash to buy back your street cred; you just shrug it off and get the guy next time.

Then there’s the LeBron James gets dunked on video

It’s very hard to find, not because it wasn’t noteworthy, but because “King James” took it upon himself to confiscate the video right after it happened. Doesn’t sound like kingly behavior, if you ask me…

And he’s catching heat for it

Chris Chase reports for Yahoo’s Rival Sports that James’ “King” moniker may have more to do with “tyrannical ways” than it does with his play on the court. Here’s what happened: Jordan Crawford, a sophomore at Xavier University, apparently threw one down on King James during a game at the LeBron James Skills Academy. Reports from the scene indicate that it was an especially juicy facial, and James objected to the egg on his face.

WWJD? (What Would Jordan Do?)

Michael, after the initial embarrassment, would likely have given the young man a tip of the cap and moved on. That’s because Jordan had class. However, after LeBron James gets dunked on, video was confiscated by Nike officials in attendance at the camp.  This was apparently by LeBron’s kingly decree. It could have been Nike acting alone, but the suspicions are there.

Eyewitness testimony

[Chase sites Ryan Miller, a freelance photographer who was there. He is reported as having said this to CBSSports.com:

"LeBron called [Nike Basketball Senior Director Lynn Merritt] over and told him something. That’s how I knew his name was Lynn. LeBron said, ‘Hey, Lynn. Come here.’”

And the tapes were then confiscated

If LeBron did indeed order the tapes be expunged, which is what appears to have happened, then he’s harming his image more than he’s helping it. Sure, the video could go viral and circulate for a little while through YouTube and other online video sites, but it would die as quickly as it surged. I ask you, has Fredric Weis sent a belated plea to President Sarkozy that all video of Vince Carter’s “Le dunk de la mort” be drowned in melted Camembert?

Now it shall be legend

Is that what you wanted, LeBron? I don’t think so. LeBron James gets dunked on video disappears, to be replaced by a lifetime of heckling. Chase nails it on the head. With video, it’s a passing viral fad, but without the video (and LeBron’s alleged actions), it becomes a true-to-life legend. Now storytellers will sink their teeth into it and the story will grow by leaps and bounds. What began as a simple two-handed slam dunk will metamorphose into a 360-degree windmill. Then, as Chase puts it: “By the time Crawford makes his Xavier debut in October, he will have jumped off LeBron’s shoulders, flipped in the air, slammed the ball home with his left pinkie and then handed LeBron $3.99 for his dry cleaning.”

A load of ego

As you’ll see in the ESPN clip below, there are people who believe that once LeBron James wins something – namely, a championship – then he’ll be worth the insane level of hype the media places on him. Sure, either LeBron or Kobe Bryant is the best player in the NBA today, but LeBron’s ego may make the climb to the peak of the mountain heavy going. Can unsecured loans net him quick cash to buy a new perspective?

Discussion of LeBron James Gets Dunked On Video | Far From Kingly

This post has 3 comments

  1. LeBron James needs to take a chill pill. He should not have done what he did; it is only going to make him look bad at the end. He can take the cameras and any other physical evidence of what happened, but he won’t be able to keep a lock on people’s mouths. People are going to talk, whether he likes it or not. He should have given the young man some credit and edify him for accomplishing something no other average individual could even come close to doing. This story really makes LeBron look like a sore loser. Props to you, Mr. Crawford!

  2. kevin says:

like he didnt look like a sore loser before? his recent actions are putting him in a bad light. first he walks out of the playoff game without even saying good job to the magic when the cavs got beat. and now this? what are you doin lebron?

  3. Darren Payne says:

Nike is believed(by me) to have taken the footage for a series of commercials and show that even the great can be humbled and put into their place.
