When they’re family, you’ll do anything
Did you know that monkey cells have been used to make effective bird flu vaccines? Apparently, a trial was carried out on more than 250 people and reported in the New England Journal of Medicine. The monkey-based vaccine produced a strong immune response in patients who received two doses.
Why is this interesting to me? Well, I have a pet monkey named George. When he was a little baby, he was incredibly sweet. He would cling gently to my arm, drinking milk from a bottle and staring sweetly into my eyes. I would carry him around, sing to him and play little games like peek-a-boo.
He’s my baby
In so many ways, a baby monkey is very much like a baby human. Unfortunately, toilet training is much more difficult for monkeys than it is for humans, or so I’ve heard – I don’t have kids of my own. But I know that taking care of my baby has been expensive. Food, training, toys, clean up – it’s a major commitment. I’ve bridged the gap with a payday loan before, and I’d recommend them when you’re budget is screeching at you. Since you’re a real person, you can apply.
I’m reminded of the huge expensive whenever he falls prey to a naughty habit he has of nibbling on fingers, particularly when I have friends over. This was cute at first, but when my blind piano-playing fiancé, Art, suffered damage to some of his digits, I should have taken it as a sign of things to come. What follows didn’t exactly happen, but with my little Georgie, it could have.
Little Georgie grew into Big George, and it was clear that our home was no place for an adult monkey. Not only did the biting grow worse, but George stopped using diapers, would leave droppings on my husband’s piano keys and generally make a nuisance of himself. I felt terrible; he would always be my little boy, but I didn’t know how to take care of him. He often seemed restless, agitated and angry. No matter how many toys I bought for him, he’d still tear apart the kitchen, or hide hubby’s special sheet music inside my giant rosebushes. I loved him, but was afraid I’d need to find him a new home.
Art had the scare of his life
When it seemed that things couldn’t get any worse, an amazing thing happened. My husband was getting ready for a concert tour, and part of his preparation was an exercise routine that included long walks around the neighborhood. During the final leg of his stroll, he heard the sound of a dog barking, then fast little footsteps and what sounded like a metal chain dragging on the ground. A neighbor’s pit bull had escaped!Art broke into a run. Considering his blindness, it would have been extremely dangerous to do this if he wasn’t thoroughly familiar with the landscape near our home. Still, as he was running for his life, he did fall a couple of times, ruining his pants and scraping his legs up good. With the dog right on his heels, Art made it back to our property – then it happened. My Georgie jumped down from the tree in our yard and landed on the pit bull’s head. Shrieking angrily and pulling at the dog’s ears, eyes and nose, he managed to distract the dog from my husband and eventually scare it away.
A payday loan saved Georgie
George was badly hurt during the scuffle. We knew we had to get him to an animal hospital fast, which we did. However, we would not have the money to cover the doctor’s bill until either my next payday or after my husband returned from his tour. Thankfully, I’d tried payday loans before and was quite satisfied with the service, so I went online and applied for the money we’d need. In less than two hours, the money was directly deposited into my bank account. It was a seamless, professional operation. Once the money hit our account, we called our town veterinarian and paid his bill. I was just so happy that Georgie was going to be OK!
After a brief recovery, George was his old self again. Sure, that included the rough spots, but we realized that not only would losing him be like losing a part of myself, but it would be irresponsible, as George had bonded with us and changing his environment would be overly stressful and borderline cruel. However, the relationship between Art and George was better than ever. Our little monkey even took to music and began to play duets with Art. You haven’t seen anything until you’ve seen a surly monkey play “Willow Weep for Me” with a blind jazz pianist.
