Follow Tiger and Phil at Bethpage Black

Golf may be a good walk spoiled, but there’s always something fresh about a major. This weekend, U. S. Open golf 2009 will be heating up the rain-soaked fairways of Bethpage Black. Last time the Open was played there was 2002, and the golfing world took to the municipal course. To be able to play the same course that Tiger, Phil and Padraig Harrington have held court on is a special honor, and since Bethpage is a muni, it doesn’t take payday loans for fast cash to be able to afford greens fees.

If you are online and want to follow U. S. Open action, there’s US Open live streaming at usopen.com. I’ve never taken the time to watch US Open golf online, but it seems that a sport with golf’s pace would work well online. For more updates, check out pga.com and the Golf Channel.

Bethpage State Park’s Black course

Bethpage Black is not an easy course, which seems appropriate for a major like the 2009 U.S. Open. This year, more than 200 yards has been added to the par-70 layout, which brings the long-distance tally to 7,445 yards. Even the long drivers out there will be put to the test by three par-4 holes (7, 10 and 12) that each exceed 500 yards. Since it appears that consistent rain will make it even more difficult to score this weekend, what will be the best birdie opportunities for these pros? They’re actually few and far between. The par-5 fourth (517 yards) and the par-3 14th (158 yards) As for birdie holes? You might consider the par-5 fourth (517) and the par-3 14th (158) the best chances.

Rain, you say? There are differing opinions on how that will influence the field. Since the wet grass will make shots stick to the fairway more often, you’ll have fewer errant shots, but this will cut down on distance a great deal, a killer on long courses like Bethpage Black. I say that weather will act as an equalizer, bringing the rest of the field close to stars like Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. Others think the weather will give the big boys an advantage, but I don’t see it.

ESPN’s picks

Bob Harig of ESPN weighs in with his opinions on who will stand out of the field at the 2009 U.S. Open:

  • “Horse for the course” – Tiger Woods. In 2002, Tiger was the only player to finish under par. Harig is one of those who think the course will play well for long-drivers like Tiger, and the rain has softened things up.
  • “Birdie buster” – Jim Furyk. Call him the man with the rusty gate swing, but that swing works for him. Since the 2009 Masters, Furyk has gone top 10 in four of six starts. At Quail Hollow, he tied for 11th. He’s hot, and he’s won a major before.
  • “Super sleeper” – Rocco Mediate. Mediate hasn’t missed a cut all year, but he also hasn’t finished  in the top 20 of any tournament. The man and his rebar putter would be a good story at the Black.
  • Your Winner – Paul Casey. Here’s the number three player in the world, but who’s heard of him? Could this be the first European player since Tony Jacklin in 1970 to win the U.S. Open? Harig thinks so. I wouldn’t wager payday loans or fast cash on it, though. That’s because I don’t gamble and Personal Money Store doesn’t encourage gambling :)
