Will movie get annihilated at the box office?

Rumor has it that Christopher Lambert, who starred in the first Mortal Kombat movie, will also take the lead in the 2010 film.

Rumor has it that Christopher Lambert, who starred in the first Mortal Kombat movie, will also take the lead in the 2010 film.

Word is traveling fast about the sequel to “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation,” and critics and moviegoers alike all seem to be asking the same question: with this Mortal Kombat movie bomb as badly as the last one?

The Mortal Kombat franchise has a bit of a peppered history as far as bringing in the bucks, and taking a chance on another Mortal Kombat movie following “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” is a bit of a gamble.

Controversy equals cash

When “Mortal Kombat” the video game came out, it was the hottest game around. Much of its fame was thanks to the controversy that surrounded the game because of its gory, violent imagery.

Of course, parents, teachers and “the man” saying “just say no” to Mortal Kombat got the attention of ever gamer out there. Before long, every adult who had enough cash or could get a fast loan owned a copy.

Mortal Kombat changes gaming industry

In fact, Mortal Kombat is one of the game series that is credited with sparking the formation of the Entertainment Software Rating Board. Before games such as Mortal Kombat, Doom, Lethal Enforcers and Night Trap came out in the early 1990s, video games didn’t carry ratings such as “E” for Everyone and “M” for Mature as they do now.

Mortal Kombat started out as an arcade game and later was released for home gaming systems. It was named Most Controversial Game of 1993 by Electronic Gaming Monthly. The ESRB was officially formed and approved by Congress in 1994.

Mortal Kombat movies

After all the attention the video game got, Hollywood couldn’t wait to get its hands on Mortal Kombat. The first movie was released in 1995 and was called “Mortal Kombat.”

“Mortal Kombat” cost about $20 million to make and was able to pull in $122 million worldwide at the box office. However, it appears that the relative success of the first Mortal Kombat movie might have been based on the oh-so-recent controversy.

Round two

The second film, “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” came out in 1997, but by then people had moved onto the next trend. Or, perhaps “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” was just a really bad movie.

The film boasted a bigger budget at $30 million, but it only managed to sell $50 million in tickets worldwide. So, the filmmakers did manage to make some cash, but it had nowhere near the selling power of the first Mortal Kombat movie or the video game series.

Mortal Kombat in 2010

Despite the lackluster performance of “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation,” the director, who simply goes by Mink, has confirmed that there will be a third Mortal Kombat movie, slated to come out next year.

Mink previously directed “Into the Sun” and “Full Clip,” neither of which appears to have made it to mainstream theaters in the United States. Thus, neither film made any money. However, with the backing of Threshold Entertainment, the third Mortal Kombat movie just might end up being Mink’s big break.

The rumored title for the film that will follow “Mortal Kombat: Annihilation” — besides “Mortal Kombat 3″ — is “Mortal Kombat: Devastation.”

Oh no, when will they learn? Another Mortal Kombat movie? I know franchise movies are the big thing these days (Hollywood apparently can’t come up with anything new, even if it is all the same crap in perpetuity) but there are other franchises that could be revived that would be far better than Mortal Kombat – maybe even better video games they could make a film out of. (Gears of War, perhaps? Wait – in development hell.) Really, it’s better left as a video game series, and those of us who actually liked the games actually would like to forget the films existed at times…Annihilation was such a horrible film.

Gears of War made into a movie. Yeah why don’t we just take every video game thats popular for like a year and make it into a movie. Seriously Ratchet and Clank have made a bigger impact on the video game circuit and you dont them having a movie. Also if you were really a fan than you would like MKA. sure it was not as good as the first one in most ways, but the characters used were better in the second one.

as i said for resident evil, reboot, get good actors, get good director, and use good cg and real effects don’t use straight cg,work on the stroy get it down perfect then release the film do what batman did and both films will work.

  3. A Mortal Kombat movie reboot is a good thing so now that Warner Bros has bought the Midway games so they could make the Mortal Kombat movie remake as long as the storyline is good and not too corny.
New actors like Shin Koyamada,Jon Foo Laura Vandervoort and new stars so original actors are in the mix too.
    Thank You.
