Reports have flooded the news media about what’s being called the “Susan Boyle Meltdown.” According to several sources, Susan Boyle unleashed a tirade of curses at strangers in a hotel lobby in London. The strangers were insulting her, or “trying to wind her up,” as the Brits say.

Sources close to Susan Boyle have said that she has been stressed out since making it into the finals of “Britain’s Got Talent.” However, I don’t know if I’d call chewing out some strangers who were asking for it a “total meltdown,” as many tabloids are calling it.

The price of near-fame

While it may have done her some good to blow off some steam, it might not have been the best financial decision, and could send her back to a life of needing a loan till payday. Susan Boyle is set to compete in the finals on the UK television show “Britain’s Got Talent.” A win would ensure her a future filled with financial stability, fame and success.

However, her reputation as a simple, sweet, humble, middle-aged woman is what got her all of this attention in the first place, along with her amazing voice, of course. If this mishap changes her fans’ views of her, all that cash she could have had her hands on may stay a fantasy forever.

Here is some background on Susan Boyle, in case you missed the story:

Suddenly Susan

Word spread quickly about Scottish singing sensation Susan Boyle. She appeared on “Britain’s Got Talent” in April, and she hasn’t left the spotlight since. Shortly after her appearance on the British show, she appeared on CNN’s “American Morning,” and reported that she was “absolutely gobsmacked” by her sudden fame.

What’s all the fuss?

So did this “Britain’s Got Talent” performer suddenly skyrocket to fame? Well, it seems the judges and the audience were gobsmacked as well. They took one look at her and expected the worst.

But the 47-year-old Scottish charity worker surprised everyone with a rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from “Les Miserables” that moved people all over the world to tears.

Will fame lead to fortune?

One fan who was moved to tears was “Today Show” host Kathie Lee Gifford. Boyle has also been interviewed on CBS. There were rumors floating around that Oprah Winfrey was interested in having Boyle on her show.

Get your Susan Boyle merchandise

A 10-year old recording of Boyle singing “Cry Me a River” surfaced after her television debut, and people immediately started hawking it on eBay. The song is from a CD that was recorded for charity in 1999. You can also purchase a pink T-shirt proclaiming “I (heart) Susan Boyle!”

Boyle’s amazing singing voice and her appearance sparked debate in the United States about whether someone who doesn’t fit entertainment-industry standards of beauty can be turned into a real money-making machine.

Of course, it has been proved time and time again in the United States that rude people with foul mouths can still become staggeringly famous. Sometimes it even helps them out. Only time will tell if the Susan Boyle meltdown marks the end of her popularity or just piques interest.

  1. The world is filled with cruel people… and a bunch of haters. Susan Boyle needs to understand that life in the spotlight can be grand and luxurious, but can also be very nasty and grave. Not everyone will find her to their liking. There will always be someone there to praise you and lift you up. On the other hand, there will also be those who will try to bring you down and discourage you from reaching your goal. That’s why it’s important that you have on a bullet-proof mindset. Let them talk, let them laugh. If you stay consistent and don’t give up, you’ll be the last one laughing.

  2. TJ says:

So she lost her temper. Probably not the best move, but people need to get on with it. The people she insulted provoked her. She is still who she is and her voice is terrific. She has talent and that should remain the focus. I am hopeing she takes it all in the finals. Score for the ‘regular’ people!

  3. Rosie says:

Susan embodies the ability of talent to overcome hype, glitz, and presentation. Britain should be very, very proud of her. All humanity should.
