Too much “Self-Talk” is unhealthy
When people are approved for short term loans, they feel wonderful. It also feels wonderful to go somewhere secluded, where you’re alone and can reflect to yourself. It’s an amazing feeling to be able to think properly, without all the access noise floating around in your head. This access noise is called “self-talk” and it’s the way most people think to themselves. However, too much self-talk could cause a person to overly stress over situations and even worry themselves into bad health.
Nature
I believe that there are healing qualities in nature. The large quantity of trees surrounding you in a park can greatly stimulate your brain. After all, trees give oxygen, and the more of it you receive the better you can function.
My Experience with Nature…
I went to the park today, and decided to release all thoughts from my mind. There were a lot of deadlines that I had to meet, and I felt overwhelmed by the responsibility. There was one project in particular that I was supposed to work on, but I kept putting it off. I was procrastinating because I didn’t know how to approach the project creatively. Just like when you fall on financial hard times and seek short term loans, when your creativity and income go hand in hand, lack of either can bring stress and worry into your life.
Just Be
What I did while at the park (and anyone can do this) was watch and observe everything, from the old couple walking their dog, to the single mother spending a day in the park with her son. The experience was difficult at first, because I kept trying to concentrate on what was happening while being judgmental, critical, or gathering expectations of why things were happening.
After about 30 minutes of doing this, I began to see things I didn’t beforehand. For example, I noticed the different assortment of dogs that were being walked in the park and got a wonderful idea for a short story I promised to submit to a client. After jotting down ideas, and writing in my journal, I could have left the park and felt good about at least gaining one extra idea for one of my projects, but I stayed longer.
More Awe
I sat longer, concentrating on the bird’s chirps, the distant sounds of dogs barking, and the laughter of children at the nearby swing-set and jungle-gym. The more I observed my surroundings, the more excited I became. I knew that something good was going to come out of the day.
Did you know…?
Did you know that relaxing the mind and concentrating on your breathing can increase alternate states of consciousness? It’s true. By taking the time out to close your eyes, relax your muscles, and focus on your breathing, you are causing more blood to flow to the brain, and you think better!
My Ah-ha! Moment
As I sat at the park longer, becoming more and more inspired, but less and less productive, I decided that maybe I should give up and try again tomorrow. But something, call it willpower, forced me to continue sitting, and observing my surroundings. I didn’t know where the meditation would lead me, but I was sure to experience something great before I left.
As I sat for another five minutes or so, I noticed a young boy and his mother at the park with their dog. The boy’s face was flushed, and he was breathing extremely hard.
“Mom!” he exclaimed, “We should do this more often. Me and the dog are having fun!”
His mother nodded her head, a knowing smile on her face, and I finally received the idea I’d been waiting over an hour for: what I’m doing and learning now could make an excellent article.
Sometimes it’s best not to force creativity; sometimes it’s best to just let everything be, to study and watch, but not react. When the time is right, everything, even the planets and stars it seems, will align and you’ll receive that spark of inspiration that seemed to have eluded you for so long.
Try taking the time to go to a quiet or reflective place, someplace where you can observe your surroundings, someplace different and fresh to your eyes. The more you get into the habit of going out of your everyday environment and exploring new places, new people, and new ideas, the more your creative “blocks” will be released. Soon, you’ll be stress-free and have a fresh mind when you do get back to work, just like you’d feel with those short term loans.
