Thousands of auto workers lose jobs

General Motors headquarters in Detroit, Mich.
Yesterday, one of the United States’ largest automakers released the Chrysler dealerships closing list. Today, the largest U.S. auto maker will release the GM dealer closing list.
Chrysler is shutting down 789 dealerships. Check out the Chrysler dealerships closing list. General Motors, sometime today, will release the GM dealer closing list. That list will include names of 1,100 to 1,200 dealerships in the U.S. Unfortunately, for people working at of those dealers, it means they are out of jobs.
Jump on low interest loans
The GM dealers closing and the Chrysler dealerships closing means people in the market for a car may be able to get easy loans and low interest loans as the GM dealers and Chrysler dealerships closing try to liquidate their remaining inventory.
However, that’s where the good news ends. Everyone who works at a franchise on the GM dealer closing list or the Chrysler dealerships closing list will soon be collecting unemployment.
A word from the workers
Franchises on the Chrysler dealerships closing list have already been informed of their fate. That includes the oldest car dealership in Chicago and Island Jeep Lindenhurst in New York.
“My franchise was basically stolen from me, and it’s gonna be given to a dealer down the street for free,” said James Anderer, owner of Island Jeep Lindenhurst, N.Y. “I have 48 people here who are going to be unemployed. We didn’t do anything wrong, but we’re being punished. Chrysler won’t even take the cars back. So the 100 cars I have in inventory I have to retail out of them in the next couple of weeks, either throw them in a Dumpster or sell them for pennies on the dollar. And Chrysler got a bailout. I’m not asking for a bailout. I don’t need a bailout. I run my business properly.”
Holding on to hope
As for the GM dealer closing list, franchise owners don’t know yet whether they are on it. One GM dealer owner, Bob McGuire, says he doesn’t think he will have to close his dealership. But he has considered the possibility.
“I would probably cry and then regroup and sit down with my wife and son and determine what corrective actions we can take to overtake this. I am not going to give up. I have made my life’s work here,” McGuire said.
Warranty holders
KTRK in Houston, Texas, addresses concerns from car owners who hold warranties from franchises that are on the GM dealer closing list or the Chrysler dealerships closing list:
So what if you bought your car from one of the Chrysler or GM dealerships that’s closing? Is your warranty still good?
Yes. But that doesn’t mean your local dealer will be around to service your car. If you live in a metro area, there should be another dealer nearby to fix your car. But if you live in a rural area, getting that tune-up might now require a long drive.
Check back later for the GM dealer closing list.

This idea that ALL of the dealer employees will end up in the unemployment line is ridiculous! I work for one of the now “non” GM dealers on that list, and have absolutely NO fear for my job. Bottom line is that these dealers can (like the one I work for) turn those lots into used car stores or aquire another franchise.
Just another attempt by the media to skew the facts and enrage the public.
Quit crying James ANDERER.
Just food for thought: Dealership loses franchise (Chrysler) but still has other franchises. Here is what will happen. 1. Office and Accounting staff is either cut or takes a salary cut. 2. Fixed operations (Parts & Service) Must cut techs, car cleaners, porters and parts drivers. 3. Service and Parts advisors take a cut in thier commisions and/or salary.
Now Here is the outcome:
1. The gas station across from dealership just lost 20% of his business (all those new cars get full tanks), so he lays off an attendent.
2. The local resturants see less patrons because of the salary cuts and they don’t hire any new wait staff.
3. That trip to Disney that one of the Service Advisors planed on is cancelled. Now disney has to do a hire freeze.
4. The new house that the Parts Mgr just bought, well he has to go into forclosure. Now your house 2 doors down is worth much less.
Can you see where I’m going with this?
Even if you are not in the auto industury, you will be affected
hey bail out, you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars and have it taken, see you are at after serving the public for years. i think you need a knock in the head
Wait a second, did Beck just say that Mickey Mouse could be hurt by this??? Try reading what Sean had to say about it. He is living in the real world.
Good Bye good Rittens! They greedy dealers were marking up vehicles over sticker. Some as high as $6000.00 over sticker. I say greed made this company go under. No Loss Maybe GM should have checked on these dealers to confirm they were doing business as should be be. They should all go out from the owner on down.
