Tyler Frost Might Sue School for Suspension

Tyler Frost suspended for going to prom

Everyone's got a prom story. Tyler Frost's just might beat yours.

Everyone's got a prom story. Tyler Frost's just might beat yours.

Tyler Frost knew he was going to a school that didn’t allow hand holding, dancing or listening to rock ‘n’ roll. However, he says he doesn’t see anything in the Heritage Christian High School handbook saying students are required to follow school rules after school or on weekends.

Nonetheless, Tyler Frost was suspended because he attended Findlay High School’s prom with his girlfriend. The Ohio teen says it was worth it, and he and his step father told a morning news show that they plan to sue the school.

Harsh punishment

Tyler Frost was required to get a permission slip to attend Findlay High School’s prom. When he brought the slip to his principal, the principal said he could be suspended and possibly not graduate if he went to the dance.

Most kids have to endure begging for personal loans from their parents to pay for tuxes and limos and flowers, but that’s nothing compared to what it might cost Tyler Frost.

Tyler Frost went anyway, and he says he has no regrets. However, because of his suspension, he faces the possibility of not being able to take his final exams on time and thus not being able to graduate on time. These are the grounds on which Tyler Frost’s family might sue the school.

Strange circumstances

You can watch a video of Tyler Frost’s interview with “The Early Show” at the CBS News web site. Strangely, after sitting quietly through the interview and saying a few brief words about the grounds for a suing Heritage Christian High School, Tyler Frost’s step father gets up walks off the set without explanation.

Much to be determined

There’s no word on the amount Tyler Frost and his family will seek if they file a lawsuit against Heritage Christian High School. The step father says that an attorney is just starting to look at the case today.

Pop culture repeats itself?

Many media outlets are drawing the comparison between the 1980s film “Footloose” and Tyler Frost’s situation. CBS News says:

A tale reminiscent of the 1980s film “Footloose” has made it to reality.

“Footloose,” made in 1984, stars Kevin Bacon. The movie tells the story of a boy, Ren McCormack, who moves to a town where rock music and dancing are banned. Bacon starts a movement to abolish the ban.

Of course, the differences are easy to see. Heritage Christian is a high school, not a whole town. And Tyler Frost isn’t looking to change any rules, he simply wanted to go to the high school prom with his girlfriend. However, Tyler Frost did buck the system by going to the dance even after he was told what the consequences would be, so perhaps there is a little bit of Ren in him.

PLEASE READ THIS 2 THE END!!!I am REALLY TIRED of hearing this story. Some people say it’s a pity they CHOSE THIS SCHOOL WILLINGLY, others are somewhat upset that the christiany gets a bad image. UPSET ALRIGHT! But not so much for the “image” christianity holds, but the fact that the school rules WERE right. Everyone keeps going on about the fact that “David danced” but no one looks closer than that!!! Ever wonder what MOTIVATED him 2 dance?! He was dancing with joy, for God’s glory! And let me tell you, that WASN’T the intention Tyler went at the prom. He sure wasn’t about 2 dance for the glory of God! I know this sounds harsh, but guys, I’d like nothing more than for everyone 2 realize the TRUTH!
Someone said on a website (and please go to it “http://www.bbnradio.org/wcm4/english/tabid/730/Default.aspx”)that..”Did God say “Thou shalt not commit Adultery”? Shake your heads “yes.” Did God also say “Thou shat not kill”? Shake your heads yes, again. Just five chapters after this event, David will do both! Would we say it is OK to murder or commit adultery because David did it? Shake your heads “No,” class.

You see, when you start making your own rules, you wind up violating many of God’s rules.” Now tell me that’s not true. People use this excuse 2 do as they want, not what God wants!

  2. TJ says:

“And David danced”. Many Christians dance, sing, and hold hands. Regardless of the strict policies of the school, he was told the consequences and made an informed decision. It will be interesting to see how this one concludes.

  3. David Long says:

The news article didn’t say what it was the principal signed, whether a permission form or simply something that acknowledged Tyler’s enrollment at Heritage H.S. so his girlfriend’s High School would know he wasn’t a drifter.
This comes down to a simple point of fact. If the principal, Tim England didn’t want Tyler to go at all, he shouldn’t have signed ANYTHING. By signing anything at all, he was giving legal precedent to the argument that he was, in a circuitous way, giving Tyler permission, and invalidating his student contract that forbade him from attending prom because the the music.

The society is facing problems with such laws. This has to go legal and it’s needed to be sorted at the earliest..

Uhm, why is everyone making a big deal of this? The issue isn’t about some school not letting their students dance – this kid signed a freaking contract, and his parents approved of it, before going to that school. Which is worse – not being allowed to go dancing, or BREAKING A PROMISE that he made to the school to not dance, to not listen to rock music? If he were to break a less-credited school rule, say, bring a gun to school, would there be hype about him breaking it? Yes. It’s the same with laws – people break things like speeding laws all the time, and they always gripe about the consequences, or even worse they get away from it; but what happen when really important laws are broken? What would happen if they got let off for THAT? It’s ridiculous that you call the school “narrow minded” and an “American Taliban” for obeying their own rules, for “standing by what they believe in” – and yet you applaud Tyler Frost for the same thing! That’s just ridiculous! Even if you aren’t baptist (like I am against organized religion), even though the rules are kind of repressive, it doesn’t mean that they are imposing their opinions! The kid and his parents obviously knew what the school’s policies were, and they agreed to them! If the kid wanted to go to prom, or even thought that there might be a chance for him to have reason to go, they could have sent him to a different school, Christian or otherwise, instead of showing a complete and utter disregard for the school’s rules.

  7. Peter Stone says:

He went to prom? Shocking! He could have actually socialized with other people, even – gasp – had fun. I don’t know what the outcome is going to be if a lawsuit gets into court, because he DID sign a contract, but it sounds like a teenager doing the impossible – young people, learning how to think for themselves? Horrible! We could have an outbreak of critical thinking in this country, and we cannot have that. It’s certainly not a part of any school curriculum I’ve heard of.

    • Alexandra says:

I’m getting REALLY tired with this issue. First of all, he and his parents knowingly signed that contract, so it’s clear their plan to sue the school is ridiculous. Secondly, people from all over judge the school rules and think they’re unfair… but they’re not. You’re gonna tell me “David danced” but did anyone question the MOTIVATIONS here? David danced full of joy and 2 God’s glory. Is that anywhere near Tyler’s motivations?(!!!) Please don’t put the 2 cases in the same boat here, because they’re not. If u remember, “God looks at the heart”. Logic tells us Tyler did NOT dance for God or b-cause he was full of holy joy. This may sound harsh, but, people, it’s true, if u really, honestly think about it. (tell me your opinions)
