Will Wright, creator of “The Sims” and Spore, is leaving his post at Electronic Arts to start the Stupid Fun Club.

Stupid Fun Club is a start-up think tank, and EA is investing venture capital to get the project going.

Stupid Fun takes smart work

The Stupid Fun Club’s mission is to develop intellectual property that can be used as entertainment. Wright is not limiting the type of entertainment the club will focus on. Rather, the Stupid Fun Club will use its cash advances from EA to develop ideas for TV shows, internet programming, movies and toys as well as video games and other electronic entertainment.

Who does Wright think he is?

Wright has worked at EA for 12 years. He co-founded Maxis in 1987 and came out with “Sim City” in 1989, long before he became a legacy at EA.

“Since then, Wright has added The Sims and Spore to a resume that landed him in the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences Hall of Fame and won him a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Game Developers Choice Awards in 2001,” reports USA Today.

My suggestions for Stupid Fun Club

Well, Wright may not be paying me, but I’ll throw out my ideas for the Stupid Fun Club anyhow. I think the idea behind “Rock Band” could be taken a lot further. I imagine video games that allow players to participate in all different types of musical genres. Some title suggestions: “Rap Star” and “Folk Frenzy.”

If they can make drum and guitar controllers, it can’t be that hard to add a turntable or a banjo.

  1. Peter Stone says:

I think most people would swear they were either members or founders of the Stupid Fun Club at one point in their lives. (College!) Still, these guys ought to come up with some good stuff. Will Wright is a huge success in the game world.
