Don’t get swept away by something you don’t understand
Call it what you like – tsunami, implosion, melt-down or earthquake, it all amounts to the same thing -a devastating happening right in the middle of a system we had built and used successfully for many years. Then came the blow. Do you remember when an undersea earthquake ripped up a piece of the ocean bed and caused that gigantic and fatal tsunami that caused havoc and death in the Indian Ocean in 2004? Do you remember how the world was stunned by the devastation? It triggered aftershocks and other earthquakes around the globe and it all happened in a very short amount of time.
Devastation grew and grew
I remember hearing a radio news broadcast at about 9 in the morning reporting half a dozen deaths. By lunch time the number of deaths was up to 150 and at 8 that evening the news reported a “few hundred.” Final count: more than 225,000 people in eleven countries.
I knew people in one of the devastated areas and I took a hurried Cash Advance to buy a shortwave radio to keep up with the news.
The force of the eruption
An event of this type takes shape over a period of time and then erupts with incredible force. What happened to global economies this past year is similar; it had been brewing for some time. When it hit, it was like a tsunami which caused other economies to start crumbling as well. The domino effect. We are all familiar with that scenario. But now we have to deal with it.
At this stage we are heavily involved in tsunami damage control; surveying the damage, picking up the pieces and moving on. Some people have bigger losses than others, but everyone has to keep going. The trick is to stay alive and not get swept away by the aftershock.
Survival tips:
- Read the papers and watch and listen to national and international news and finance coverage at every opportunity. This way you become part of the action. Vigilance is necessary in volatile times.
- When a tsunami hits, there’s no time for procrastination. You must act instinctively and instantly. Keep up with the speed of events.
- Stay away from your comfort zone. It is not up to date with the latest events anyway.
- Be honest with yourself. You know the questions and the answers. That’s probably why there’s so much confusion out there today.
- Learn, absorb, assess and act. Knowledge without action is impotence.
- Decide that you see the glass half full and concentrate on filling it. If you are seeing it half empty you are thinking negatively.
- Count your blessings, all is not lost.
- Understand that fear is the exact opposite of faith.
- Who’s in charge here? Resolve to be bigger than your problems.
- Don’t negate your own power. Whatever you’ve been dealt, know you can continue the game with it.
Be positive
Think positive and act positive and you will be positive. Living positively is within the possibility of human behavior. You too can do it.
