I have been offered a new project. Should I take it?
It means taking a Payday Loan in order to buy another computer which will be used only for this project. My small office already has 4 computers in it and is very cramped. And then I have an instinctive suspicion about taking on another engineering project.
I know all about projects. I have done many, some small, some big, made money on some, lost on others. It’s hard to tell how it will go. But one thing I do know is that all projects, no matter what their size or what or where they are, go the same route.
There are 6 standard stages of every project.
The 6 stages of every project are Enthusiasm, Disillusionment, Panic, Search for the guilty, Punishment of the innocent and Reward of the non-participants.
1 Enthusiasm
This is the stage where I should be now. The project is the design and construction of a new pedestrian bridge spanning highway No 443 in order to allow the children who live on the other side of town to get to school without crossing the highway which they can only do at the moment at Tucker’s corner.
The town council is torn in two, those in favor and those against. The mayor refuses to get involved one way or the other. I am the engineer so I am neutral although privately I think the bridge will probably be a monumental mistake. The kids won’t use it. But work is work and the project proceeds.
2 Disillusionment
The bids are in and the contactor is on site with his mobile office, a crane, masses of equipment, men, cars, pick-ups, excavating machines and just about anything else one can think of.
Honestly, did we really need this? Now they are reducing the highway from 4 lanes to 3 and there’s a build-up of cars stretching back about three miles in both directions. Perhaps we shouldn’t have been so hasty after all. This is where the Payday Loan comes in, for me. I took a Payday Loan to buy another computer to do the site control.
3 Panic
I received an agitated call from the highway traffic control. The traffic is now reduced to one lane and is backed up for miles and miles. How long is this going to continue? A couple of the town counselors called in at my office and asked if is too late to stop the project.
4 Search for the guilty
The town council is up in arms. At a special session this morning they wanted the names of all those councilors who voted in favor of building the bridge. It sounded a lot like a lynching party.
5 Punishment of the innocent
The police called around at my home early this morning to arrest me for my part in building the bridge. I explained that I had nothing to do with the decision and was only involved in the design as a consultant.
6 Reward of the non-participants
The bridge is finally complete and the highway is once again flowing with traffic. The children are not using the bridge to get to school. A special ceremony was held on the bridge and the mayor, who refused to take part in the decision making to build the bridge, was presented with a silver key-ring as a token of the town’s esteem and thanks.
Now having read about the way of all projects, should I still accept another project and apply for that Payday Loan to buy yet another computer?

Those 6 stages of a project are exactly right! Bravo!
I love the 6 phases, so funny and at the same time, so true. I read that list years ago, and it is still accurate.
