New coins cost a pretty penny
Pennies cost more to make than they are worth. But the U.S. Mint is releasing four new penny designs to honor the much chronicled and highly revered 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. The first of the four designs comes out today, Lincoln’s 200th birthday.
Lincoln’s many fans and admirers would probably argue that the pennies are worth manufacturing, even if it does cost the Mint money to make them.
Keep a lookout
The front of the penny, with a raised print of Lincoln’s face, will stay the same. The penny design being released today depicts the one-room log cabin in Kentucky where Lincoln was born. The three other designs will be released later in chronological order.
The second design shows Lincoln sitting on a log as a teen or a young man in Indiana. The third design shows Lincoln standing in front of the Illinois capitol. The last design will show him in front of the unfinished federal capitol, which was built during his presidency.

Oh man, no one uses pennies except at Coinstar or rolling them up to sell back to the bank. Don’t get me wrong, Lincoln is easily one of the greatest president we’ve ever had, but I think by now the Lincoln Memorial and the $5 bill is about enough. I don’t think anyone is really served well by spending more of the public’s money to give the least used, and according to some, most annoying unit of our currency a face lift.
