Are there ‘ridiculous items’ in stimulus plan?

Countless Republicans, and some Democrats, railing against President Barack Obama’s economic stimulus plan. At least one newspaper columnist has a few choice words of his own. One of those words: “ridiculous.”

Ruben Navarrette Jr. made a few points in a recent column that caused me to think twice about some items included in the plan. For today’s update on the progress of the economic stimulus plan, check out this article from  your quick payday loans store.

Good causes, wrong bill

Upon first glance, the first question I asked myself was “How can this guy be opposed to child care and preventing STDs?” The economic stimulus plan, as is, includes $350 million for child care on military bases. It also devotes $300 million to preventing sexually transmitted diseases. I agree that both of these are good causes. But Navarrette makes an excellent point.

“These politically motivated giveaways do nothing to fight the recession,” Navarette writes.

Mislabeled

I do not think that spending on child care and preventing disease is “ridiculous,” but this spending won’t stimulate the economy. Sure, if the government pays for child care, families will have more money to spend on other things. But spending on child care is still spending, so this provision just shifts spending from one place to another; it doesn’t create more.

It can be argued that spending on STD prevention will save lives, definitely a worthy cause. Sexual education will also prevent people from having to spend their money on treatments and tests. But again, spending is just shifted, not augmented. I definitely support investing in Americans’ health, but this item belongs in a separate bill.

Those are good causes to support, of that there is no doubt. Child care is an essential, especially with the sheer number of working parents these days, and the members of the military deserve our support. To go along with the other portion, 1 in 3 adults in America have an STD. Granted, some of them aren’t aware of it, but the fact remains. Unlike other infections like influenza, rhinovirus (cold), staph infection, meningitis, etc, STD’s are 100% preventable. If some more education in schools can help decrease that rate, then we need to do it. That said, I don’t think that either of these laws should be in the stimulus package.

I have to agree. This is for a good cause. Both of these topics are certainly things that must be addressed… when the time is right. We’ve got to consider the fact that our economic system is in need of immediate, effective attention. Things that can wait must wait. Times like this, we cannot be wasting any more time and money on insufficient movements that has nothing to do with the economical healing process.
