“This isn’t just an economic concept”
Like a payday loan, it’s something tangible.
The L.A. Times‘ Mark Silva reports that President Obama has ordered the creation of a “White House Task Force on Middle Class Working Families” and legislation that will strengthen labor unions. Vice President Biden will be in charge of the task force. This comes none too soon, as America’s gross domestic product sank 3.8 percent in the final quarter of 2008. “This is a continuing disaster for America’s families,” said the President. Mr. Obama’s definition of “middle class” also includes those who aspire to be a part of the middle class.
Closely related to the $800-billion-plus economic stimulus plan, Mr. Obama’s task force for the middle class will help to combat the growing joblessness that he describes as “the American dream in reverse.” The goal of the task force will be to rebuild roads and schools, double the country’s alternative (”green”) energy production and update the healthcare industry. All of these ventures will create jobs “for years to come.” Hopefully, the President will not cap faxless payday loans at 36 percent annually, because that would take away jobs for years to come.
A strong online presence
Keeping with his belief that government should be transparent and easily accessible, President Obama will promote the task force with a Web site called AStrongMiddleClass.gov. All work completed by the Biden-led committee will be documented on the site. The goals Obama hopes to achieve with the Web site is to show the public how government is “expanding education and lifelong training opportunities, improving work and family balance, restoring labor standards, including workplace safety, helping to protect middle-class and working-family incomes and protecting retirement security.” Your payday loan will be keeping a curious eye on the President’s task force to see how his promise of help for middle-class America will be fulfilled.

If this doesn’t make you want to fly to Washington and slap your legislator, nothing ever will. Congress gives itself a $93,000 raise to stimulate the economy. It must be nice to have that kind of extra petty cash laying around. Instead of tightening your belt in this recession, wouldn’t you like an extra $90,000? Never mind the record deficits. Never mind that ordinary Americans are struggling to pay their bills. Our Congress thinks it is far more important to be able to dole out perks to itself.
A man with a vision, I pray for his success!
Sounds like a wonderful plan. I just hope the preparation is quickly structured and ready to take on such a task. There’s no doubt that the American nation is in desperate need of something like this. We absolutely need more jobs and not just any jobs, but good and stable jobs. Plus, I don’t want my child to grow up into a world with limited options.
This is a step in the right direction – the middle class is what this country is supposed to be all about, instead of just enriching the top 10%. And that is exactly what has gone on over the last thirty years or so – and it is high time that the balance of power shifted back our way.
I have looked over your blog a few times and I love it.
Yes….I will be keeping a curious eye on the President’s task force to see how his promise of help for middle-class America will be fulfilled too. What do a bunch of career politicians know about living from paycheck to paycheck?
