Well, it appears that people aren’t buying as many planes as they used to. Cessna, which manufactures flight training aircraft, business jets and personal planes, plans to reduce its workforce by 4,600 jobs.
Cessna previously announced that it would cut 2,600 jobs. After the company completed more financial review, the number jumped to 4,600. Cessna plans to complete the cuts by the end of March. The company will shut down a Toledo, Ohio, service facility.
Drug industry takes a hit
The second- biggest drug maker in the United Kingdom, AstraZeneca, announced that it will have 15,000 fewer workers by 2013. Last year the company announced it would cut 9,000 jobs. This year, after seeing no sales growth, AstraZeneca will cut an additional 6,000 jobs by 2013. Through job cuts and other budget alterations, the company aims to cut costs by $2.5 billion.
Despite its stagnant state, AstraZeneca’s Chief Executive Officer David Brennan says the company will not see a huge merger like the one between Pfizer and Wyeth. Brennan’s strategy, besides cutting jobs, relies on small purchases and licensing deals.
“We don’t need a big merger or significant acquisition to cut costs and realize efficiencies,” Brennan said.
