President Barack Obama today made a rare move: He met with the entire Republican conference. The purpose, of course, was to gain support for his $825 billion economic stimulus plan.

Obama had meetings with House and Senate members of the GOP persuasion to try to gain support and quell criticism for the legislation. However, House leaders had already issued a preemptive strike.

Republican House leaders held a closed-door meeting with other Republican representatives before they met with Obama. The leaders asked their constituents to oppose the plan, except in the case of significant adjustments. We hope these adjustments don’t affect online payday loan companies.

“The slow and wasteful spending in the House Democrat bill is a disservice to millions of Americans who want to see this Congress take immediate action to get this economy moving again,” said Republican Conference Chairman Mike Pence.

Obama has said he is willing to make changes and that the purpose of meeting with the Republicans was to hear their ideas. A White House spokesman said the president is willing to consider any good ideas he hears.

Some people question whether the meetings would be productive. However, there is no question that a Democratic president sitting down with the entire Republican conference signals a change in tone between the White House and Congress.

“I think what our big moves will be today are to ask the President to help us,” said Representative John A. Boehner of Ohio, the Republican leader. “Help us make this plan better so that it will put Americans back to work.”

I don’t think I have ever heard of a President, regardless of party, reach out to the entire opposition to get something done. That is big of him, and I hope that however the stimulus gets changed it does America good.
