Here’s the skinny. ElfYourself.com was a viral video site created by OfficeMax that let people upload their pictures and create dancing elves that they could send as e-cards to family and friends. It was the fastest growing site in December 2007, peaking at 39 million unique visitors in the U.S. and attracting a total of 100 million unique visitors worldwide.

When Greg Spiridellis, CEO of JibJab Media, saw the site, he realized it fit in very well with what JibJab does. So he decided to look up ElfYourself’s traffic numbers on Quantcast. That December, it rivaled Facebook in traffic.

But JibJab could spice it up

In February, he called the chief marketing officer of OfficeMax and proposed a partnership: JibJab would create new dancing elves around its Starring You platform. There would be not one dance, but three: Disco Elves, Jazz Elves, and Country Elves. They would sell digital downloads of the videos and personalized images printed out on cards, mugs, and mousepads.

Spiridellis’s idea could turn ElfYourself from an expensive marketing ploy into something that might actually make money. OfficeMax agreed and this year JibJab will run the site.

Clearly Elf Yourself is a fun way to reconnect with family. But let’s say that the current economy has you scrambling to make ends meet. Let’s say that you have the money to send an Elf Yourself gram (it’s inexpensive), but that you haven’t been able to keep up with your Internet service provider’s bill lately.
