Call In Gay Day is Underway!

Call In Gay Day, declared by gay rights activists as a day of protesting due to the passing of proposition 8, an initiative banning gay marriage, is underway this Dec 10th and has proven to be as controversial as payday loans.

The strategy of calling in “Gay” from work today was encouraged to show the rest of the world just how integral gay people are to American society. They will be uniting together to rally support for each other and their cause. “We will show the world how we love,” was one quote off the “Day Without A Gay” website.

People are expected to show their support by calling in gay, volunteering their time to the movement and avoiding any television, internet, or commerce related activities. It’s declared to be an official boycott on the U.S. economy, like the one they want on payday loans. This perhaps is not the best idea from the standpoint of the nation’s current economic conditions. Hopefully more constructive ways will be found by the community to protest the cause in the future.

Rallies in the Bay Area are to take place this evening as gays and those supporting their cause will be coming together to show support for each other, and let the rest of the world know of their disappointment over last month’s election results.

Think calling in “gay” is a dumb idea, that’s like me calling in “straight”, or calling in “female.” There are laws about sexual harassment and discrimination at work, and in my opinion you are bringing your sexual preferences to work by calling in gay, which could have people filing charges on you.

It is likely that there will be a lot more controversy to follow after today’s events. The results may likely find many losing their jobs by failing to come to work in protest with the rest of the gay community.  Discrimination will also play a likely role in the coming days as those who lose their jobs, will likely claim it as an act of discrimination when it may be just bad tactics and irresponsibility.

Sound Advice For Troubled Times

Perhaps it would be in the best interest of those choosing to protest to take a sick day or a personal day off rather then using the “calling in gay” strategy. Jobs are valuable commodities today and worth holding onto. Ill favor from your employer may play out later if your company happens to contribute to today’s ever growing layoff list. There are plenty out there looking for payday loans, or just a payday – you don’t want to be in that position.
