Books like “Batman and Philosophy: The Dark Knight of the Soul” raise questions about violence, identity, psychosis and some of the ethical dilemmas that will fuel debates for as long as we have words.

To give you some idea of the contrasting life views between Batman and the Joker that dominate “The Dark Knight,” listen in on this conversation between Bruce Wayne (Batman’s alter ego) and his family’s longtime butler, Alfred Pennyworth:

• Alfred: A long time ago, I was in Burma, my friends and I were working for the local government. They were trying to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders by bribing them with precious stones. But their caravans were being raided in a forest north of Rangoon by a bandit. So we went looking for the stones. But in six months, we never found anyone who traded with him. One day I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine. The bandit had been throwing them away.

• Wayne: Then why steal them?

• Alfred: Because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren’t looking for anything logical, like money. They can’t be bought, bullied, reasoned or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

• Wayne: The bandit in Burma, did you catch him?

• Alfred: Yes.

• Wayne: How?

• Alfred: We burned the forest down.

Act or watch the world burn

Sometimes, the hero must take drastic action to stop the villain who simply wants to watch the world burn. In resulting to drastic measures as Batman does (brutally violent tactics, maintaining his secret identity despite the Joker’s murderous call for him to publicly unmask himself), he places others in danger while pursuing what he believes to be the greater good. This makes him what many would consider to be the “anti-hero.”
Meanwhile, the Joker simply wants to show everyone on Earth that the even the best-laid plans can be unraveled. Why plan? It means nothing, as far as he’s concerned. He is a classic example of a homicidal nihilist.

In the Batman universe, the chasm between the haves and have nots grows and democracy teeters on the brink. America is a nation built on the backs of the working class. We are not naturally more benevolent or virtuous than other citizens of the world. What keeps Americans from killing for food is our ability to acquire it in safer, more efficient ways. When the means to provide is taken away, when reality “makes the people poor, desperate… they’ll all become criminals.” Those are Batman’s own words.

But he will never stand idly by and watch the world burn

Certainly you won’t be resorting to spear fishing for plump passerby on Main Street anytime soon. The thought is simply barbaric. However, you do have a reasonable choice to make when it comes to how you handle a short-term financial crisis. Burn down the forest of media propaganda and find your own path to payday loans.
